2024-06-30 22:02:39 +0000 UTCI think it’s particularly remarkable how when I don’t watch these episodes but just remember them - think back on them - I do not see Hudson’s body. I see Lucy’s. Even though it wasn’t Lucy. That’s how well she portrayed Xena.

How the representation feels so much more genuine when it doesn’t really need to be thought about. There’s no representation anxiety. Just shows you the difference compared to shows today where it’s literally made a quota to put into it. It really is just better when it doesn’t need to be. It feels more authentic. And the storytelling doesn’t suffer. It works with it naturally.

And I do like how they keep it consistent that having an external moral compass with the company you keep is not the same as having an internal one. There are experiences you just don’t get unless you’re up close and personal and intimate with the human condition.

2024-06-30 06:16:46 +0000 UTCThere are certain reiterated themes throughout the entirety of the show’s run. One of the most frequent ones is balance. This is an episode about balance and specifically what happens when we lose it. How important it is to be balanced in oneself. Hudson and Kevin do a fantastic job representing this theme as Xena and Ares. But you will meet other characters that also represent it. It’s a very frequent theme. Xena itself as a show does very well with the balance of drama and comedy. I wouldn’t necessarily call this a comedy episode but it’s certainly half an half. A dramedy. So even the tone of the episode fits the theme. This is what you get with genuinely well-written and well-portrayed TV art/entertainment that knows what’s it’s supposed to be. And people don’t realize that Xena isn’t a serious drama all of the time. That it can effectively be a very good comedy as well. Nowadays we’re more used to a show sticking to one genre and therefore one tone but back in the 90’s/early 00’s it was very common for one TV show to be all different kinds of genres and tones. This is what is referred to as “genre TV” and Xena is a very good example. There’s a lot this show does with genres, tones and themes that you wouldn’t get with TV shows made today. It’s one a kind. In many ways. Just as Xena is one of a kind with many skills. You’re going to love it.

The lightness and calmness of Xena’s face during conversation and then even the slightest worry, the creased forehead and slanted eyebrows. Not to take anything away from Lucy because she’s an incredible actress too. But she didn’t portray Callisto all that well in comparison. All I really saw was evil Xena.

Between the fish cakes scene, Gabrielle giving the "pinch", and her antics when she was traveling with Joxer--Renee is too funny! And I'll give points to Joxer for slaying his first "monster". Kevin is always great to see! Nice to see a somewhat..."gentler" Ares haha! Suffering the pleasures and hells of mortality 🤣! "What self respecting God of war would do this? ... BLURRRRRRP!" Though, of course Ares is just gonna be Ares in the end ... Though he DID keep his promise though, so there's that. As mentioned by others, as well--Hudson as Xena was fantastic. We sure got lucky.

2024-06-30 02:44:40 +0000 UTCTHAT is a really nice theory on Callisto. It 100% makes sense. I mean honestly, sex was probably the last thing on her mind. I always figured she pretty much confirmed that with Theodorus in Return of Callisto. If Ares and Callisto had sex, Callisto's motive was absolutely more about messing with Xena.

She's so good that I often think of this episode and I remember Xena saying the words, not Callisto. ... I have a theory that Callisto never had sex with anyone until she was in Xena's body, and really just wanted to subject Xena's form to the humiliation of being with her enemy. ... The director, Charlie Siebert, also played Sisyphus, replacing Ray Henwood, who had last played the role on Hercules. ... Bloodthirsty Gabrielle is hilarious. I love when she tried to do the pinch and then just clocks the guy. ... It's a happy ending!
