2021-11-16 07:46:30 +0000 UTCWell, considering the fact that several of the character's names are Germanic in origin and much of the buildings in this world are based on German architecture, I'm going to go with the traditionally German pronunciations they use. Not only that, but even the Japanese dub largely uses more German sounding pronunciations. If you listen, you clearly hear the Japanese voice actors saying "Eruvin" with a "v", which is the closest way for a Japanese native to pronounce it "Air-vin". It's even spelled out in the manga in Japanese Katakana as エルヴィン (e-ru-vi-n).

2021-11-14 05:22:03 +0000 UTC“Air-vin” rolls off the tongue better. As far as I’m concerned, if the dub says it that way, then it’s ok to pronounce it that way as a fan. Also, in Japanese it sounds closer to a “v” than a “w” in English anyway.

2021-11-13 21:44:26 +0000 UTCFun fact: Eren, Mikasa and Armin’s home town, Shiganshina, was actually based off a real town in Germany called Nördlingen (please spell check me if I got that wrong 👍). As for the Erwin name debate, I personally have always pronounced Erwin as “Air-vin” but that’s just because that’s how they pronounced it in the show. The setting of the show is mostly inspired by Germany so I believe they were going for a more German feel with Erwin’s name. The English language obviously differs from German in ways so it’s not at all uncommon for people who primarily speak English to hear and interpret Erwin’s name as Er-win or Air-win. Hope this helped :)

And then there’s even more that happens in the manga (no spoilers, don’t worry) that ties everything together even more. It’s actually crazy how connected everything is in Attack on Titan
