Shera Episode 11 Reaction!

Enjoy!

Comments

I just totally realized something that I am going to have to hold onto until the end of S4 reactions.

Aaron Jeffery

Rewatching this with the wife had some sudden realizations about the hologram making eye contact with Catra. I did not remember that moment and makes so much sense now after watching the whole show

Ash b

The sad end here remides me strongly of the Roku and Zosin final confrontation. Zosin let Roku die and did not help his formal friend. Here, Catra leaves Adora to die and did not help her as well. Such a parallel in these tragic ends.

I am of the opinion that Light-Hope has manipulated both. Light-Hope owns the ruin and is a program and as such has a fixed, programmed goal. But it needs Adora/She-ra alone. Therefore, it artificially stirs up the conflict between the two and this time Adora/Catra do not see the manipulator. They can't fight back. It makes Catra worry only about the scared little Catra inside her - fantastic as her own memory looks Catra right in the eye - and push Adora away. Adora is left alone with this and must let go without Catra's promised unconditional help! Light-Hope, in this relationship triangle, was thereby the only one to fully achieve her goal in this episode! Where I think Adora is not plummeting to her death. It is a simulation, Adora cannot die. Reminds me of the holodeck in star trek. The simulated reality dissolves in the moment Catra turns around and leaves Adora. I think Catra regrets her decision against her friendship with Adora even now. We see her stop in the doorway without seeing her face, the memory of Adora coming back painfully with Scorpia saying "she's the best friend ever".

100% agree. Shadoweaver's conversation with Adora about controlling Catra better is something that could cause Adora both guilt and anxiety being both responsible for Catra and afraid of failing to protect her, leading to a sort of rescuer syndrome.

Helgi Bergmann

I don't take any credit for this observation. Overly Sarcastic Productions did a stunning character analysis of parallels between between *redacted* and Catra (second hand spoiler warning, I do not recommend watching yet until finishing the show). That analysis was what made me actually pick up and try She Ra in fact. The point is, while the scene with Adora, Catra and Shadoweaver has obvious and strong implications for Catra - that you rightly pointed out in your reaction - there are also more subtle negative themes being reinforced with Adora in this scene as well. Namely, we see here and in other scenes throughout the show that Adora has been told again and again that anything Catra does wrong is her fault, for not stopping her. That she's responsible for all the bad things that Catra does. BOTH Adora and Catra seem to have grown up thinking that it is just and right for Adora to be completely responsible for Catra's mistakes and failures. While Adora has many good and fine reasons to want to be a hero, this is strong evidence that she is also suffering from a deep desire to "fix" all of the problems she was always told to feels responsible for. Catra has learned the justification that "Adora didn't stop me, it's not my fault", and Adora learned the opposite, "I didn't stop Catra, so everything she does is my fault."

The music that plays in this episode is absolutely beautiful through and through, and if you're up for it, keep an ear out for repeating musical motifs (be it similar to the music in this episode or otherwise) if you run into them. Not only are they nice to listen to, but they're great for tying together overarching themes and narratives in the show!

Just a note! This first ones ruin is not the same one that Glimmer, Adora, and Bow run into when they first meet. Nice catch with the similar security barriers being blocked off to Adora without the sword though, gotta say one of my favorite things about this show is its interconnection of tech and magic. Amazing reaction and discussions as always :)

exhausted

It's such an interesting dynamic. As the favored child, Adora was made to feel responsible for keeping Catra in line, but she tries to protect her within the confines of her favored status. To Catra, that feels like empty protection, while Adora feels responsible for the pain of her friend but it's really just Shadow Weaver's abusive parenting style manipulating both to keep them in line.

fr0st

They already watched the 12th episode so probably not going happen but that'll be awesome

Suplee215

Another thing that hit hard was Catra saying that, even though Adora always had her back, it was never to the point to put herself in trouble with Shadoweaver. And I do think that sometimes the only way to truly stand besides someone is to risk it all for them. So far it seems that Adora was never ready to go that far for Catra.

Eglė

You know what would really make all our collective days, folks? If you watched the final two episodes of the season back to back and released their reactions close together. That would be amazing!

fr0st

I don't know if they noticed Catra caressing Adora's hand with her tail after she saved her from falling (obviously not at the end lmao). It was just so cute to see to let be unnoticed

Robin B

I went to sleep and woke up to more She-Ra and excellent analysis. Today will be a good day

Jonathan Harding

"You should have seen your face, you were like AHH! NOO! BETRAYAL!"

Drengle

All that said, notice how Adora reacts in those flashback scenes. Adora is as complex a character as Catra.

Katie Kruger

Great reaction! I’m really here for your She Ra reaction| AOT is great and all but it is much more popular than She Ra but people really underestimate just about everything but the animation in She Ra. It is truly a great show.

Katie Kruger

I almost never watch the commentary for very long after a reaction... the exception is Letts React, and in particular their She-Ra stuff.

William Timmins

As an aside, I don't know when you can fit it in, but watching the Indiana Jones movies would be good! :D

William Timmins

Great analysis as always! So excited to see the next episodes. This truly is where things start getting super real and we get into the meat of the discussions and analysis at the end with all of these characters. Catra's arc is really familiar to anyone who's been in a toxic or abusive relationship with a parent but Adora's silent struggle to always be perfect because the consequences of her failure is her loved ones getting hurt is all she's ever known get overlooked a bit, but are just as valid. So please you're both enjoying the show!

Second to last!

Letts React

What’s the “pen ultimate episode” mean?

Quarantings

I loved this reaction and all the discussion! I agree with everything you guys said in your analysis. I do want to add one thing, though... Catra has always been at least somewhat aware of how toxic Shadoweaver is. If you remember in the first or second episode when Adorra brought it up, Catra's response was something like, "Duh, I've been telling you that." So I also think part of Catra is hurt that it wasn't her that made Adorra realize and start acting against Shadoweaver's toxicity. I think there is some extra resentment and pettiness mixed with that. I genuinely believe that if Adorra had wanted to leave earlier, specifically with and for Catra, then Catra would have left with her.

jay luna

I felt like this also showed a hero complex on Adora's side, since growing up she was the leader and "in charge of Catra", well Shadow Weaver pinning the blame on any suffering that Catra went through on Adora not being good enough. Which I always believed is why Adora was so devastated about Bow and Glimmer getting kidnapped since she's She-Ra and she likely feels that she let that happen.

Harley Taylor

Ooh! I haven’t heard that before, but it’s so truuueeeee

calcifer

I was waiting for this episode reaction. I loved the analysis. This is one of my favorite episodes because it really helps us understand both of these characters. The “you promise?” scene kills me every time. That memory came back right after Adora told Catra that she could have left just like she did. I think that look she shared with her younger self was her saying that Adora lied and broke her promise. She wouldn’t always be there for her.

Alisa Davis

I think it does xD

Lucas Barros

That interaction with Shadow Weaver also clarifies Adora’s personality trait of feeling responsible for everything. She had to watch Catra get punished and then was basically told (or, at least, she internalized) “If you were better, this wouldn’t have happened.” “Don’t let something like this happen again” refers to them sneaking into the chamber, sure, but it’s also telling Adora that she “let” this happen to Catra. It’s not Shadow Weaver’s fault, it’s Adora’s. Catra knows that it doesn’t matter what she does, Shadow Weaver will always treat her like shit. But Adora was consistently told “You have control, so when bad things happen, it’s your fault.”

calcifer

At this rate, you're going to need to invest in a bigger "Shadow Weaver Sucks" counter.

SweetCandle

This was great! So worth the wait, your guys analyses are always on point. I love how you pay attention to detail! The rest of the series is gonna be a wild ride and I can’t wait for you guys to watch it all 😁

Ci-Ci

Well… I feel attacked by this episode

Lizzy Gayle

This was a great reaction. I appreciate your deep dive into why Catra acts the way she does. A lot of people just write her off as evil, but she has very valid reasons for doing what she does. That doesn't mean she's doing the right thing, but her motives at least, make sense. I am beyond excited to take this She-ra journey with you two. I'm so glad I found you at the beginning!

Erin Haury

I've seen this episode described as the end of the prologue and the start of the _real_ story.

Frank Wales

Oh and Montana? Catra is definitely a villain lol

emma

This is one of my favorite episodes. Also, baby Catra hissing is so cute.

Wildwolfrider

And remember, this is season 1. it's the happy season. (I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler)

Suplee215

I honestly can’t wait to see you two get further into the series I love your analyses of the episodes

Emma Jarvis

God you have no idea how much I’ve been wanting to see reactors actually understand Catra’s character perfectly (Adora’s as well). That discussion was so satisfying. What a great episode and 10/10 reaction

Chelle

Someone call the wambulance because we are about to be tearbending up in this bitch.
