If you want to make a human bone for example you don't need another human bone you need the elements that make up bone, so calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulphur, iron, zinc, manganese ect. That's why blowing up the water worked. H2O separated into pure hydrogen and oxygen is super explosive. Basically, alchemy is like cooking and you don't make a cake with a cake, you use flour eggs ect.. That's what Ed and Al where using. They figured out the composition of a human body of their mother's size and tried to transmute her. My interpretation of the problem with bring back a life is what is the equivalent makeup of a soul? More than that, what is the make up of a specific soul? I think Ed was thinking like a chemist, as in our mom made us so our blood is genetically tied to her so that's equal to a soul which, yeah genetical that makes sense but there is a ton wrong with that spiritually.

2022-08-14 21:33:21 +0000 UTCI think pausing more may be useful when there are discussions happening because I suspect you guys missed the plan Ed outlined which was that since the homunculi have been intervening actively to keep Ed alive since he's "an important sacrifice", if Ed's life is being threatened by Scar attacking him, it will lure out at least one of the homonculi to save him. To do that, they need to keep scar engaged, safe from bullets, but also not allow him to kill Ed or Al.

2022-08-14 20:41:34 +0000 UTCI'd like to clarify that Ed did not give up his arm in exchange for Al's soul, he gave up his arm in exchange for creating a bond between Al's soul and the suit of armor. But this was possible because Al's soul still existed, it was just trapped inside the portal of truth. This is very different from when someone tries to bring a person back from the dead because (as the boys discovered in the previous episode), once a person dies, their soul either ceases to exist or goes to some unknown place where it is absolutely impossible to recover it from. So, if you want to resurrect someone, you'd have to create a new copy of that person's soul, and THAT is impossible.

2022-08-14 18:37:43 +0000 UTCSome people have pointed out how Jean Havoc's spine was severed making automail not work, but also remember that even if he got automail, it would take like 3 years for him to recover and be used to it. Ed recovered from his in a year and a half and people were amazed by that recovery time. They don't have that kind of time to wait for Jean.

2022-08-14 17:59:07 +0000 UTCyou talked over this in the episode, so I thought I'd inform you. Havok cannot be helped with automail because his nerves were completely severed in his spine. If you remember, when Eds automail is connected to him they have to connect the nerves as well. This is not possible with the kind of injury Havok sustained.
