Full Metal Alchemist Episode 26, "Reunion" Reaction

Enjoy/cry! Next episode will be coming this week, hope you all are excited for an INCREDIBLE September!

Comments

Honestly, that's not even a Kenny thing. No brother with a brother gets through that stinger for the first time without tear ducts getting a workout. Fun fact, that "kick the door open" bit is one of the anime-only moments. In the manga, Ed just gets dragged back.

AE Jones

I broke when kenny started crying.

Alex Mercer

it truly is beautiful. I have autism so i cant really socialise, so watching other people is my way of experiencing life in general. So watching videos and seeing moments like this is basically what i live for and i truly appreciate them.

TheDragonQueen1998

Actually its a mistake in the dub. In the og, als body actually just says "i cant go with you, youre not my body" like an automatic error message

Elviira Lehtonen

Yeah, i kinda got confused about that the first time i watched it. I had alot of theories about it

Elviira Lehtonen

My siblings are 18 years older than me and 20 years older than me respectively, and as I grew up not only did bonding fail, but they grew more and more into people who don't respect me and who I can't respect either (and couldn't even if they DID respect me), so I at least somewhat get what you mean. It makes logical sense that someone would have this response to that scene, but it's hard not to think of the contrast. I have actually received phone calls from parents about my brother, and they ended with me legitimately upset that he was still alive, because the one thing he's ever used his life to do is hurt people. Seeing a real person experience what sort of feels like the exact polar opposite is beautiful and resonates somehow, but it's also genuinely surreal.

Its very interesting to see/hear the perspective of someone who is close to their brother watching this show. I had a brother, but due to many factors i could never form a bond with him, so ive always seen myself as an only child. So though i love watching this show, i can never truly get the bond Ed and Al share. But watching your series is giving me a better chance at understanding this show on a much deeper level. For that i can only thank you and hope that the Patreon money i give you can help. So thank you, thank you for giving me a chance to see a sibling bond i could never achieve myself. Thank you.

An interesting change is that in the subs the only thing Alphonse's body says is "I can't. You're not my soul. I can't go with you", versus, "I can't. I can only leave with my own soul. I'm sorry I can't go with you". The latter implies that the body is having full fledged feelings of being sorry he can't go while the former is more like autopilot giving an error.

I think the anti authoritarian streak of Ed's has transformed into steely determination. And Kenny, me too, he was so close saving his brother and he made sure he promised him and made him feel sure instead of being helpless. It's good stuff. Also the mind links both body and soul in this alchemy.

Zarmus

Also, I feel you Kenny. No matter how many times I watch this show, that ending just chokes me up so bad. Watching you do the same might have made it a little worse this time XD

R. Lewis

I was already watery when the scene was getting started. Then kenny got hit. Game over. You guys have fun reactions and theories. I loved when kenny said you guys got so much info this episode… you did… but also you didn’t! Believe it or not, i would still say you’re just tip of the iceberg right now

Rudy Velazquez

If I understand it correctly, the idea behind the "Mind" is more metaphysical than just your brain. It's more like your metaphysical consciousness, or rather, your "self." So to use the example presented in this episode with Al's body, it exists in the portal, while his soul exists in the physical world. And yet both appear to have consciousness, so how is that possible? The answer is a third component, the mind. So Al was made of three parts: Body, Soul, and Mind. When they did the transmutation, after Al's soul left the messed up body they made, it went into the portal to rejoin his body. Then, Ed pulled his soul back out, while his body remained behind. His mind, meanwhile, was pulled halfway, tethering the two together, and now exists simultaneously in the portal and in the physical world. So basically, the Body is what you're made of, the Soul is what gives you life, and the Mind is your consciousness. Ed uses human transmutation in this episode to break down his Body, and his still-conscious Mind then rebuilds it in the physical world, which pulls his Soul along and allows him to return. They pass through the portal in the process because they have to, and thanks to Envy's stone they don't lose anything in the process because they used x number of souls from the stone.

R. Lewis

The arm was exchanged for bonding Al to the suit.

My younger sister first introduced this anime to me many years ago to *try* to get me into anime (it didn't stick for awhile but now I appreciate the show) and watching you guys made me want to binge the show while being able to understand and track everything finally. I made it to the end of the series and I absolutely sent a gigantic text to my sister while crying to make sure she knows how much I love her. This show really hits older siblings in the gut, especially ones who are shorter than their younger siblings now 😭 send texts to your siblings more often to tell them you love them yall that's what I got from this show

Jenny Fisher

I have a brother and we are like best friends. So I felt this episode on a deep level. It's one of the many reasons I love this show. The relationship between brothers is so relatable. Considering that Full Metal Alchemist was created by a woman, I find her ability to portray the brotherly bond impressive.

VXP

Man, seeing Kenny cry has clearly made us all cry. It's such a fantastic scene with the combination of the outro music, Ed desperately struggling against the hands, Alphonse's original sad expression when the door closes and then the bursting through to vow that he'll be back for Al soon and then Al's little smile at the end because even though his soul isn't there he trusts and believes in Ed's promise. Chills!

fr0st

while that last scene is undeniably powerful, it never made me cry... but kenny crying made me cry FKFKFK

awildjord

I love your guys reactions and the fact that you guys are reacting to FMA:B one of my favorite series ever. You both seem very knowledgeable and insightful and I love all the theories you guys have going. This reaction series has brought a lot of joy to me and is a nice distraction and cool down at night after a day of studying in classes and working in the evening. Can't wait for more!!!

Nicholas

God I love the fact that Kenny is the one who has been getting emotional this series haha. It really is a touching story about brothers.

JuanderfulJuans

Seriously I really enjoy your reactions so much, its really fantastic how much you discuss every possible theorie. and Kennys tears T.T Its also one of the best episodes. I enjoyed it a lot! Definitely worth the wait. Keep up the great videos!! And by the way it's still too early though, but if you finish either FMA, Demonslayer or Arcane, I would seriously recommend you to watch "86 Eighty-six" as your next series. The english voice acting is on point and there is a loot to discuss, and it has one of the best storyboards :D

Hisaki

Kenny your tears took me right back to the first time I watched it 😭

Tom Johnson

Ed stated pretty well. "The soul and the body are connected by the mind." Alphonse is currently living a intertwined paradox of sorts. He is mind body and soul but the body and the soul are not occupying the same space. Alphonse in the outside world is soul and mind inside of a metal body well at the same time inside of the truth Alphonse is a living body and a mind but without a soul.

Calvin

love the tearbending for kenny <3 amazing reaction guys <3

Jaé-De Milton

That ending to the arc actually kills me every time

That Guy

The ending of this episode hits different as an older sibling. I tear up everytime.

april 🍏

1. I love both of you so much 2. PLEASE DONT CRY CAUSE THEN I M GOING TO CRY

Clancy Morton

Between this show and Arcane, y’all are being put through the ringer when it comes to sibling dynamics 😂 the fact that you both can relate so strongly just makes the experience all the better

Chelly

and the Knowledge was a form of punishment for their sins. Which is very ironic. Not only to live the rest of their lives thinking human transmutation is almost possible but also knowing it's not, and to an irony which we have yet to get to in the story.

Insecure Classroom

Just want to point out, doing good with the Philosophers Stone is what Doctor Marcoh was doing earlier in the series.

Justin Broadbent

LITERALLY

Letts React

Coming sometime later!

Letts React

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that they lost their body parts specifically in exchange for knowledge. Except for Ed's arm which was given up pull Al's soul back

No Consequence

You were not crying alone Kenny. I have seen this show at least 30 times, I watch it ever year and it never ceases to make me cry.

runningwithwolves

im right there with Kenny crying that scene is so sad and powerful 😭

Francesca White

they quite literally sacrificed a whole body and an arm just to make that thing.

Snow

None of this is spoilers, just clarifying information from stuff you've learned so far. So, remember the phrase you keep laughing at "how many people are inside you?" We've seen since their introduction that the characters from Xing know how to sense the flow of "qi" or life energy. We know that the homunculi are made up of philosophers stones, which are made by multiple human sacrifices. The stones themselves, as stated in this episode, contain the sacrificed people's souls. We see Envy's true form contains a mass of people that Ed later identifies as the souls of the people of Xerxes. This mass of souls is what they sense from the other homunculi, aside from Wrath, who feels like a regular person. Again, as stated in this episode, this is because the souls within his stone fought for dominance until only one remained: thus, while Wrath is a homunculus, he only has that one soul/life within him, and its why he ages normally. But for all the others, the Xingese characters are able to sense all the souls who were sacrificed for the stones at the heart of the homunculi. Hence "how many people are inside you?" So, for May to be feeling an even bigger mass of life, like a huge crowd squished together and squirming around...implies a lot.

cosmotron

Yeah the end of this episode is a hell of a thing.

Eric Smith

The cold, indifferent cruelty of the universe vs the indomitable human spirit

Yeah KeeN

this episode always gets me!

Matt

ahhh, I was looking forward to the better call saul questions and impressions

Christian Santiago

Wow!! Always love both of your reactions and theories! This episode is always such an emotional roller coaster.

jamurano

"Let it all out, let it all out" the song that plays when it rains

Marcelo

I just want to point out, in case you've forgotten, they didn't need to sacrifice anything to create the body of what they thought was their mother, they had the individual ingredients to create an average human body so that's where that "exchange" takes place
