2023-04-09 02:26:55 +0000 UTCevery time i remember catra's redemption arc i keep wondering what a redeemed azula would have been like integrated into the gaang alongside zuko and the shenanigans that would have ensued. her and sokka teaming up to tease zuko, her and toph being a freaking menace team, her and mai and ty lee just vibing and being hilarious with the gaang. her and katara teaming up to be badasses together. what we could have had :(

A lot of comments were made about this "fanfic" by ND Stevenson and I think with the end of the series you could take a look into it to get some additional explanations.

2022-06-08 02:17:19 +0000 UTCThe magic v tech motif has been rampant throughout this entire series, a main conflict in its own right (and honestly my favorite one), and this episode is fantastic for highlighting one of the main cruxes to it; control. Some notable examples of this conflict: We had the base fight on Etheria, the Horde vs the Rebellion, runic magic vs robots. It was magic and its conduits fighting for their control of the planet/themselves. We have Entrapta, never trying to control magic, but to understand its intersection with tech. Being one of the few to ever consider them in a manner that is symbiotic rather than parasitic. We have the First Ones tech itself, an organic technology, a byproduct of attempting to syphon and weaponize magic. When we see it it appears in many forms, but notably it’s either been degraded or surrounded by destruction, integrated into the Horde’s weaponry, or it’s been rerouted as a weapon of destruction on the larger scale: the retrofitting of the planet and the introduction of the Sword of Protection, devices of control, one over Etheria’s raw magical energy, and the other over Etheria’s chosen protector of that magic, She-ra. And now, we have Prime setting his eye(s) on the magic at the core of the planet, to him, a potential weapon. In Hero, Razz tells Mara that they cannot control magic, where the first ones attempted to and failed, magic simply is. And now, in this episode, Melog tells the group that their magic was too wild for Prime, and Prime failed because he could not control it. It is not significant to just Etheria, Magic is itself, in some capacity, it’s own wide spanning entity. For however advanced Prime, the Horde, even the First Ones were/are technologically, magic denied and is still denying subjugation against how IT desires to exist. But technology hasn’t been letting up on its own barrage either. And there holds so much potential there for parallels between the other conflicts and themes of the show and this one.

Whatever reservations they may have are saved for private spaces (and since we really don't see many/any, I'm guessing it's not a big thing for Glimmer, Bow, and certainly not Entrapta.) and interactions with Catra are deliberately to make her feel welcome and accepted. It's how Bow and Glimmer are and I love that about their writing.

2022-06-08 00:57:19 +0000 UTCAlso a great question about the dynamic with Lonnie/Rogelio/Kyle vs Adora/Glimmer/Bow. In the Horde, I imagine Shadow Weaver scapegoating Catra meant that the other kids she was in charge of (Lonnie, etc.) treated Catra badly too. We see in Catra and Adora's memories that Adora never cared if Catra used sneakier tricks when they spar but Lonnie gangs up on Catra, causing Adora to win by default and Catra to resent them. After Adora leaves the Horde, we also see Lonnie tell Catra that Adora isn't around to protect her anymore, which suggests to me that Catra has been bullied or excluded by the other kids growing up. The fun thing to note that the only time Catra has met people who has no baggage as being part of the Horde or Princesses has been Melog and Double Trouble and she kind of takes to both. DT reiterates that they are only giving her their loyalty and watching her back because of money but Catra clearly wants to form attachments but struggles with anyone other than these two.

What a journey it's been watching your reactions and particularly seeing Adora and Catra's journey to getting much worse but then also healing and coming back together as part of a positive relationship. Contrast this with S1 E1 and the dynamics we could see between them in the horde and its night and day!

It's so lovely to see our trauma baby Catra healing a bit and how openly Bow and Glimmer just integrate her into the group so that it's not at all awkward or weird plus Catra finally seeing Adora smile or laugh because of something she's done because it's been *years* since they even had a positive interaction. Also, yessss, therapy animal! It's just so funny that Catra has a pet cat, since she's part cat, but also really makes sense that they have a bond. If it had a one on one with Adora first, it would have probably identified that she was one of the First Ones and attacked outright.

Catra likes Bow and Glimmer 4 yes Bow Catra is so cute Catra doesn't mind if Adora thinks she's cute 😊☺️ Adora season 1 episode 2 "I don't know I'm not magic" This episode: "I'm magic too" She finally accepts who she is Character growth we love to see it

2022-06-07 19:49:30 +0000 UTCYeah it’s interesting because growing up Catra got the Zuko treatment, but she ended up being more like Azula by season 4. Although I also see her in season 4 being kinda like Zuko in the first half of ATLA season 3. They both get everything they thought they wanted and they’re angrier than ever, lashing out even more at the people around them. I guess I think of Catra less as an Azula and more as a Zuko without a loving mother and uncle, a Zuko who only ever had Ozai.

The golem then becomes a helper, companion, or rescuer to the group in trouble (traditionally, the Jewish community, but Catra/the Rebellion subs in here). Just some cool etymology there! Also yay, now we've got Catra's emotional-support alien cat on the team!

2022-06-07 17:25:01 +0000 UTCI’ve seen a few people criticize this episode for feeling out of place since it’s a more fun, light-hearted episode compared to the rest of the season, but honestly that’s part of why it’s one of my favorites! I think it was completely necessary, like how we needed Stranded between Corridors and Save the Cat. I’d actually argue that this is the only episode that can really be categorized as light and fun since 3x02. Sure this one seems dark and spooky at a few points, but between all the cute banter, the funny moments, the fact that things actually go well for the characters, and the episode ends on a high note to me all adds up to a fun, light episode. Ironic that it’s called, “Shot in the Dark.” All the other episodes after 3x02 either end on a sad/dark/low moment or have a lot of sad/dark/low moments throughout. Maybe the only other potential episode is Stranded, but I’m the fence with Bow being upset for most of it. He’s the heart of the BFS so if he’s upset it’s hard to think of the episode as light and fun.
