Not to mention there’s probably areas that spawn less alchemists because access to knowledge and resources is significantly smaller than in larger cities.

Jerry Ferrell

The discussion of Ishval war, Alchemists, Xmen. You guys didn't notice when the town came in she said she was passing through, so it's not that they hate her because she does alchemy or don't trust her. She didn't live in the small village and just happened to be there at the right time.

Peter Film

Also, as someone who has watched this show a thousand times, I just want to say that seeing Kenny (and Montana too of course,) getting so emotional at all the same places that still make me tear up is so cathartic.

HamboneKablooey

To Montana's question about why they don't just call an alchemist to solve problems, it comes down to the same reason that not every small town a designated farmer. It's a highly specialized skill that not everyone has the skill or knowledge to do. Izumi was just passing through, and the boys begged her to teach them, which implies that Resembool didn't have any other alchemists in town.

HamboneKablooey

All good if it's coming tomorrow instead Kenny, but just to ask so we go about our day, is 13 coming today or later?

fr0st

Begging for 13

Yeah like in the real world: can anyone become a specialised scientist? Yes. Would it take a lot of effort, natural gifts, hard work and money to be able to study enough to get to a point where you can make money off being a specialised scientist? Yeah. Most people go for some other occupation instead, but they could be scientists if they wanted to.

fr0st

Literally like why do small farms out in the middle of nowhere have manual labor instead of high tech machinery: money.

fr0st

I feel like we're missing the obvious in the answer to that question about why don't people just do alchemy instead of really doing anything manually? They're poor. They're a small village out in Hicksville and they don't have the resources to pay for an alchemist but they can make sandbags and I bet they have worked before, as they do in our world. A strong alchemist happened to be passing by and helped but if it was a state alchemist, they would probably not be allowed to randomly help out because they're soldiers.

fr0st

Probably is a spoiler, yeah.

It reminds of some dialogue in a game I was playing talking about hunting. It was about how the only difference between cutting up vegetables and killing animals is that the vegetables cannot scream. It also had the line “you must be killing to be living.”

Jerry Ferrell

Makes sense! I could also see some people (of course wrongly) assuming all alchemists are k*llers after what happened in the war

Belle M

alchemy is kind of like science, and being an alchemist is kind of like being a scientist.. and so it takes a lot of skill and being able to retain so much information to be good at it.. i think that's why not everyone does it

awildjord

omg Montana sassing Ed for being short xD

fr0st

Without a doubt I believe the latter is true! The military doesn't seem very popular outside of central (at least from the comments we've heard from Pinako in the East and Izumi in the South), so I'm sure people want to avoid that solicitation. I never thought too much about that first part though! But it would especially make sense in the East since they were most affected by the Ishvalan war than other parts of Amestris

Velocity Paige

I've always kind of assumed something like this is correct. Like alchemy is both rare and alchemists may hide their abilities because of the reputation of state alchemists and because they don't want to be recruited as state alchemists themselves.

Belle M

Someone tell me to delete if a clarifying comment is a spoiler, but I don’t think this one is since I don’t think the show ever explicitly says this but: Alchemy isn’t taboo - though I totally get why you guys would think that! State alchemists are looked down on because of the Ishvalan War and what they were ordered to do, but alchemy itself doesn’t have that connotation for most of Amestris (maybe save for people like Scar who have been personally victimized by alchemy - but even he only targets State Alchemists for what they did in Ishval). The reason why alchemy isn’t common is because like any other magic system in a series, it’s complex and takes understanding to learn. You need to know the exact chemical composition of what you make, you need to be creative enough to consider the form you want it to take, and it probably takes up some sort of energy or stamina. Rural towns with little to no alchemists (like the one Izumi met the boys in) likely just don’t have access to the resources needed for people to learn how to perform alchemy ☺️

Velocity Paige

I always thought it was related to how much of the “truth” each person saw. Like, we know that Ed was about to see the truth of human transmutation when he went through the portal, only for him to stop short of seeing it. At that point (idr if it was in either anime or the manga but I could’ve swore) the truth had said something like “that’s all you get to see for the price you paid” and that’s when Ed lost his leg. By this logic, Al has probably seen more of the truth than either of them bc he lost his whole body.

Velocity Paige

No they had all the ingridients of a human body in a tub

Steiniges Moos

Okay so I just thought about something. I always wondered why Al’s entire body was taken and only Ed’s leg. Izumi only (“only”) lost organs… I guess the toll for the boys was because they were trying to transmute an adult size person, and they were themselves not adult sized. I guess the toll is proportional to the mass of whatever you’re transmuting. Izumi’s baby was much smaller than she is, so her toll wasn’t very severe. Ed and Al though, didn’t have enough mass to trade because they were kids, and so equivalent exchange required all of Al’s mass and some of Edward’s in order to initiate the transmutation Which now that I thought about it, seems kind of obvious lol

Andrew G

BRUH TOO SOON LOL

Andrew G

Al's body + Ed's leg = mass for zombie mom

Norrin Radd

Love that Montana got "dream wizard" vibes from Van Hohenheim 😅

Jaé-De Milton

Not that the first 12 episodes are bad per SE but the show really kicks off episode 13 and onwards

Nicholas

booooo

Chelly

Montana talked about wanting to see more of the baby in this episode. I’m like, “Well, you *kinda* see a baby in this episode…”

Arnold Kim

it's my birthday!! let's go and a new episode

every time y'all say something to the effect of "this aspect of fma sure is a lot like attack on titan!" i die a little inside XD

In order for every problem to be solved by alchemy, Alchemists would have to be omnipresent, more powerful than they actually are, and indentured to non-alchemists. This is, to say the least, impractical... ok it's completely impossible. Most people live as normal people reliant on normal technology, and any group of people who desired to live a life entirely reliant on alchemists would deservedly be enslaved by them.

Norrin Radd

I don't know if this is a spoiler but the first person you see during the opening song, the blonde guy who puts his hands out, that's not Ed. He is taller and has a different eye colour.

Bazil

Realizing the boys have thought they deserved this for years and that like... They felt that since they CHOSE to do human transmutation, they didn't deserve to hurt for what they'd lost and how they'd failed and boy. BOY that does hurt to see. I love this episode.

KT Bees

With regard to why people would do labor when alchemy exists, the simple answer is: alchemy on a useful scale is very difficult, you need to be able to know the composition of material backward and forward as well as the formulas and transmutations to change it how you want. There aren't a ton of alchemists who can perform that kind of transmutation, and a large percentage of them are State Alchemists ie. military personnel, so can't/won't be lent out to respond to tasks/emergencies on a local level.

Ghengis Don

The first 12 episodes are pretty much the Introduction chapter of the show and episode 12 is my favorite of the intro episodes.
