The Owl House 1x5 Reaction, "Covention"

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! Next episode coming later this week!!

Comments

Witch is really only gendered in media. Witch is gender neutral.

thevoidbender

Im so upset that they didnt realize that Amitty didnt know

CrimsonDTV

Double witches duel

The Best Nyaa

thats exsactly what it is

matthew james Stromberg

double doggo attack XD

matthew james Stromberg

I thought warlocks was male witches?

Connla Lyons

Even before Harry Potter there was sort of a gendered connotation to them. "Wizard" was used to describe a scholar who learned magic through intense study and practice, while "Witch" described someone who obtained their powers through nefarious means and used them to harm others. People were very sexist about it, so most witches in fiction and most of the people put on trial for witchcraft during the early modern witch hunts were women.

EmberQuill

No they have two dogs and a cat. Please, do not forget Cheyenne!

Retied

Y'ALL HAVE *TWO* DOGS NOW???

JuanderfulJuans

The person who came up with the wizards and witches gendered thing is JK rowling and everyone just went with it. In reality they are not gendered at all

Ari

Yes, Amity cheated but she didn't know :(

Valentina M

Rob Goldman

The cut at 6:59 is god-tier comedy

Cyrus Moore

They say that when attacked by a grizzly bear you should play dead... to get used to the experience.

Scott Svensson

It was a bit ago, I think. I've seen her on Tiktok and the constant questions about whether she was staying until finally it was confirmed that she was part of the family! Lots of cute doggo and cheyanne breadmaking content on there if anyone is interested. I think their handle is Letts_React for the channel and idahothestate for Montana

fr0st

When did they get Mia? I’ve never seen her before!

Jenny D

Yeah Salem may not have been the first but it was definitely the largest.

Jenny D

"Witch" is more of a species designation in this show.

J. Jenny Jameson

When I was a kid, I learned the term for a male witch was Warlock. And then that one series changed the way people think about it.

emelsi

amity didnt know she was cheating, lilith put the construction sticker thing on her neck without her knowing

awildjord

I am literally the person who, anytime there's a character on screen in this show, scoffs "She's not Amity."

emelsi

I love Montana's shirt.

emelsi

Unless keeping it a secret is part of the plot (which is a possibility but I highly doubt it) I don't think a character's identity is a spoiler. This is like knowing Luz is ADHD. Information never stated in the show although there are hints to it and knowing it can help people understand the character and possibly relate. Nothing in the plot is gleamed from this information

Suplee215

I love how the animation, especially for battles, just pops off sometimes. Very cool to see the sudden upgrade in various sequences as opposed to non action scenes.

fr0st

Still cheating, for sure, but the intention here is important. Amity's character that we see so far is to work incredibly hard to be the star pupil and that title obviously means a lot to her as well. Being exposed in front of so many people as either a rube who didn't realise that she was being used for cheating or as an actual cheater can't be too great for her self esteem.

fr0st

Always great to see Mia! We get to see Appa wandering in periodically but it's rare to catch Miss Mia on camera!

fr0st

For the sake of theorizing, it may be useful for you guys to pick out the hidden words and the message in the first letters of the titles. The titles so far: AWITC. Make of that what you will. :D

fr0st

Witches and wizards being gendered is a more modern thing. They were originally different things that in modern day got merged together as like a generic spooky sorcerer sort of thing. TOH goes back to the roots where witches and wizards are not gendered and are different things. Also Amity had no idea she cheated. Lilith put that glyph on her without her knowledge which was why it was on a place you could openly see. When she summons her abomination, you can see she is suprised and it looks like she thinks she was proud of herself for "getting better at magic" only to become upset when she learned it was simply a power glyph placed on her.

Vex Valor

Yeah, it's made fairly clear that Amity is upset by the idea of inadvertently cheating and Lillith confirms she did it ("only because I know you would cheat"). Amity obviously can't be upset at her renowned mentor, the star of the Emperor's Coven, so she's disproportionately upset at Luz, the only target she has for her frustration at the moment, but comes around when she sees Luz's sincerity and love for magic.

fr0st

I always took her reaction to be that she was both surprised and proud of herself for making such a huge abomination. I never got any indication that she was suspicious of it being so big.

Jenny D

Every time I watch this episode now I get the Witch Duel song from The Owl House Fan Musical stuck in my head and I’m not mad about it. The premise is Amity vs. Luz rap battle. This is an animatic someone made to go with it https://youtu.be/Zt1CJxwOIP4

Jenny D

I’ve never seen a reactor catch the “bog of immediate regret…I challenge you to a witches’ duel” bit, and it’s one of my favorite lines from the show!

Jenny D

I don't think so ... we see her earlier conjure an abomination for practise. This first one is her size. With the start of the duel the abomination is trice her size and her face expression shows her astonishment. She at least knows that something is funny.

Retied

How? I could see that being the case if it’s ever mentioned or even remotely hinted at in the show, but it’s not. That’s like saying that a comment about Luz being confirmed to have ADHD is a spoiler because it closes off other possible explanations for how she acts. After all, her having ADHD is never confirmed in the show, only by Dana in an interview. All sharing the information about Lilith does is discourage shipping her with anyone, which I think is important for aroace representation. As someone under the ace umbrella myself it also feels weird when I’ve seen other reactors simp over Lilith. Not saying they’re wrong, the information about her sexuality isn’t common knowledge, but that’s why I made the comment.

Jenny D

I’m pretty sure the character who gave king the pen was Azula’s voice actress! Also possibly one of the characters in the stand during the witches’ duel. Edit: Yeah, the “She’s not Amity,” kid with the Amity foam finger I’m almost certain is Grey Delisle!

Jenny D

The fact that it's never mentioned in the show is itself a spoiler. This closes off a lot of possibilities and theories.

William Timmins

It’s totally in character for Amity not to show a reaction to something like that. She was keeping her Azura fangirling a secret and she was in the middle of a confrontation with someone she didn’t like.

Jenny D

Also, here’s the secret coded message so far: 1. two 2. witches 3. torn 4. apart 5. now

Jenny D

I’ll say this now, feel free to pause this show as much as you want/need because there’s a LOT of background details and references that are fun to spot.

Jenny D

Dana Terrace is a big anime nerd (and just nerd in general) so there are definitely a lot of anime references throughout the series. She also got started drawing by tracing Pokémon, and King’s original design looked so much like Cubone that she had to change his color.

Jenny D

Interestingly, a Kikimora is mythic slavic house spirit. Like Lilith and a few other names, there are these references to RL stories throughout the show.

William Timmins

Is it technically cheating if you were tricked into doing it? I guess, but unlike Amity Luz actively chose to cheat, so I think what Amity said to her at the end was fair. Amity obviously would’ve been the winner in a normal fight, which is why she accepted Luz’s challenge so confidently.

Chelly

I play it off as Luz was speaking so fast that Amity didn't have time to hear her correctly/react to it

MissSunFlower94

So, fun fact: Amity actually didn't know she was cheating. Lilith slipped the construction sticker on her neck right before the Witch's Duel.

ryx.doesnt.exist

BIG SPOILER (KIND OF) DON'T READ FURTHER I found a tiny plot hole in this episode. When Luz mentions the good witch Azura Amity doesn't react to it which is weird given how much of a fangirl she is.

Bazil

Technically, "witch" is a gender neutral term. It's just stereotypically a female, mostly because the people in charge of witch trials were usually old men. A "male witch" is kind of like a "male nurse" or a "female doctor"

SweetCandle

Lol, as I was typing it I noticed that the two words are almost exactly the same.

Jenny D

At first, I read that as aromatic. I had no idea what you were talking about.

SweetCandle

Adorable puppers!

William Timmins

Yup. All over the new England area. I just lump all American witch trials under "Salem witch trials" as people understand what that means (and there's some differences between witch trials in America and those in Europe a bit before)

Suplee215

How? It’s never mentioned in the show.

Jenny D

That's a bit of a spoiler, sheesh

William Timmins

Dana Terrace is from Connecticut, which is actually where the first large scale witch hunt in the colonies took place. The Connecticut Witch Trials predate Salem by like 60 years.

Jenny D

A fun behind-the-scenes fact about Lilith that doesn’t get mentioned in the show is that she’s either aromantic, asexual, or both!

Jenny D

I believe her official title is Emperor’s Assistant.

Jenny D

That’s why I don’t agree when people say that most of season 1 is filler. Nearly every episode has something that comes into play later on. Honestly there’s only like two episodes I’d classify as filler, 1x08 and 1x14, and even then 1x08 still has a tiny nugget that comes up later.

Jenny D

Happy Halloween indeed!

Jenny D

There are so many things revealed here that you were spot on in assessing. Really great to see how so many things that seem throwaway set the stage for things to come...

Jonathan Harding

Also, "Kikimora" is the tiny goblin-ette here. U can say she's the "Chief of Staff" & "Press Secretary" for Emperor Belos. Looking forward to your Ep.6 review!

Carlos Guzman

You're probably hearing this for the umpteenth time, but Dana terrace the series creator voices "Tiny Nose 👃" demon. A cute self-insert!

Carlos Guzman

The wizards and witches being gendered is a relatively modern idea. I do not know if this is due to Harry Potter or if it predates it but historically witches was a gender neutral term. Especially during the Salem witch trials and in stories by people like Hawthorne. Being that the show creator Dana Terrace is from the New England area where a lot of these things came from and Hawthorne and others were from I think she's influenced a lot from there. Edit just looked it up and the term in middle English was gender neutral but got applied more to women and it was a slow evolution.

Suplee215

If you guys are still wondering yes, even males are referred to as Witches

Bazil

how to start a great reaction to an episode of the owl house : puppy attack

Élina Kressmann

Happy Halloween!! This is one of my favorite episodes and I hope you enjoy it!

taco

And here is Lilith!
