Grey Delisle/Griffin has been the voice of Daphne since like 2001, and in that series Daphne basically had a new niche hobby every week, so sometimes Grey got to do different voices for her.

2022-09-21 17:16:02 +0000 UTCIdk, think if the show was cancelled because of the LGBTQ themes and she contractually wasn’t allowed to say so Dana probably would’ve just kept quiet about it. She’s been pretty outspoken against Disney when they’re wrong about something. I mean she did that whole charity drawing stream when Disney supported the politicians behind the Don’t Say Gay bill. Of course it’s possible that the exec who cancelled the show (she did say in her Reddit post that the decision came down to one guy) did so because of the LGBTQ themes and just gave her the other reasons instead. But as of now that’s just speculation. And to be clear I’m not trying to defend Disney. The show definitely deserved a full three season, and iirc they were initially renewed for that and then it got cut down to the three 40 minute specials instead. That could be what the lines you mentioned were referring to.

Either way, season two begun to emphasize a few key points (that I can't say because of spoilers) that came off as a little spiteful towards Disney, so I just assumed there was a direct reason.

Owl House did not appeal to the demographic Disney was aiming for. In the United States, the purpose of a children's show is usually to sell toys. Adult viewership did not facilitate the sales that Disney wanted the show to generate. Additionally, serialized shows are usually confusing to young viewers who have not been with the show since the beginning of the story. Plus, they cannot be effectively aired out-of-order, which is an issue for children's television that is not designed for bingeable watching via on-demand services. Remember, "Owl House" was originally a Disney show (not Disney+). Had it been a Disney+ show from the start, it might have had a different fate.

Also something fun for Kenny to look for while editing this series: there’s a coded word hidden within a scene of each episode and once decoded the words form a poem. Each code is prefaced with an eye follows by some symbols. Some people are really good at spotting them, meanwhile this is the first time I’ve spotted the one from this episode and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve rewatched this show. I have no idea how the fans who first noticed these managed to decode them or where they found the cipher though.

I'd agree, but I also think episode 2 is super important because episode 1 was a bit too on-the-nose with the message and the characters hadn't been fully figured out yet (as often happens in pilots). Episode 2 is kinda meh, but it fixes the tone, the message and the characters before the more important episodes begin. Surprisingly, the Owl House doesn't have a lot of filler (that doesn't involve novel-writing).
