Enjoy!

Judging by every metric we have thus far (polls, patreon videos, and engagement), Owl House most likely will become our next show we watch on Tuesdays, but we LOVE the Dragon Prince and will most likely watch it right after TOH ends.

That being said, the last piece of the voting puzzle if the engagement and views on the first episode of the Dragon Prince coming tomorrow at 12 est to YouTube, so make sure to check that out!

Are you planning on starting dragon prince again now you finished with owel House

talha khan

Are you guys going finish this show there is like 4 or 5 session

Also, pretty sure Viren was going to suggest he actually take the king's place as a sacrifice. He was squaring up to make this big heroic gesture to "redeem" himself in front of Harrow. I don't think he regrets using dark magic, that's not his personality, but maybe he just wanted to gain his friend's respect back with a noble sacrifice. In a twisted, egotistical way, I think it makes sense.

Sam Revlej

Bummer that you won't tackle TDP until after The Owl House. I like both shows, but The Dragon Prince is a little closer to home due to being made by some of the staff of ATLA.

Sam Revlej

When you come back to this series, you could have a "Callum being Sokka" counter.

I completely agree, I'm just not sure if Kenny is aware of all that enough to understand the implication he made. I think the confusion for many comes from how UV maps are completely relative. People like to think of 3D models as having strict spatial rules for up, down, etc. since they're used to things like paper and sculptures, when in reality, UV maps can refer to any direction and be folded in any way the artist wants. The texture for one leg on a human can also refer to the right leg if the maps are stacked so spatial rules are very abstract. So, you're right that when someone says "on top" the only non-relative direction that makes sense in a context like that is that of the camera. I guess a good example to help people with is how a paper map of the earth is flat, but the real earth is a sphere so the act of moving your face further away from the map translates to 3D as moving away from a sphere in all 3D spatial directions simultaneously. Fascinating subject.

Soren and Claudia are definitely inspired by King Arthur and Morgana/Morgan Le Fay. I thought Claudia was going to be my favorite since I tend to like magic users but then it ended up being Callum

Ricky Sadd

Maybe. Usually when someone is talking about “drawing on top of” the models, usually it means frame by frame hand drawing it on the screen. Whereas with 3D texturing programs, you are directly texturing the object or character to look a certain way. I thought of another way to describe it the other day. In school we learned that 3D models are similar to stuffed toys. When you UV map them for example, it’s like you are cutting the toy open on the seams to lay it flat so you can draw on it and change its look. But with hand drawing on top of it in this scenario, it’d be more like drawing stars and moons on paper, cutting those out, and attaching them to the stuffed toy. I don’t know if that makes sense or not…. I suppose it doesn’t super matter, it’s just been something that has bothered me personally, so thought I’d try to shed light on it. Either way, like you said, we can all agree that Arcane is pretty. :)

i love the owl house it’s been my comfort (sort of) show for like the last 2 years along with she-ra bc i found them both at roughly the same time i started the dragon prince when u guys said u were gonna consider it bc i’d been planning on watching it eventually and i figured if i’m gonna be paying 30 dollars a month when i don’t even have a job i should prolly at least know all the shows u guys are watching 😭 then i ended up finishing it all yesterday and loving it so much and i’m so excited for the next season but i’m glad u guys are picking the owl house since it’ll be finished sometime next year (😪) whereas i think dragon prince is gonna have a few more seasons (or planning to)

awildjord

True, although I think you and Kenny are talking about the same thing. I think he was saying 'on top of' as in the surface of the models, not as in onto each frame like I think you think he meant. (Although even that distinction is pointless when you bring in projection mapping so you're right, its hard to explain) Final Verdict: Arcane pretty

Gamut

So, not sure if you guys watched the behind them scenes stuff for Arcane yet, but it’s not traditionally drawn on top of the 3D. The characters in Arcane are 3D, then a program like Substance Painter is used to paint and texture the 3D objects. It’s the same program used for most 3D animation. In the Arcane behind the scenes, you can see them using Substance Painter to paint the characters. It’s a bit confusing because they are using a program to paint the characters and objects in the show, so it seems like it’d be drawn on top of, but it’s not. It’s hard to explain. They do have some 2D drawings they did though. Most, if not all, the special effects are hand drawn. So like smoke from the cigarettes, or spittle from when characters are punched. Not sure if there is a better way for me to explain how the process works unless I showed you. In Dragon Prince, they are 3D models made with a specific kind of texture to look more 2D though, they have no 2D painted on top. And yes, Kenny, you are right. Backgrounds tend to be hand painted which saved money, or some characters or objects in a 2D show will be 3D because it also saves money. It depends. For example. In Frozen (and most other 3D animated shows) all the backgrounds are different 2D components composited together. It looks amazing and blends in seamlessly, but they’re 2D elements. 3D objects tend to be only what the characters interact with directly or stand on directly. Like trees up close with be 3D, but trees in the background will be painted. Does that make sense? I feel like I’m rambling now, haha. I just love animation stuff and since I went to school for it, I kinda have additional knowledge of how it works.

great reaction as always

Glad you're probably gonna watch more TDP after TOH!

Gestrid

They said they'll most likely watch it after The Owl House.

Gestrid

That's honestly amazing news because I was so torn

little Pun Dragon

Glad you are liking both shows, great to hear you'll watch this after Owl House.

I agree. Viren's morality was at a crossroads. I actually feel that at the moment, Viren was willing to sacrifice his life so his friend can live. But Viren has a LOT of character flaws, one of which is that he has the emotional maturity of a 5-year old. There are many ways Viren could have responded to Harrow's outburst. Instead of understanding that Harrow realized within a timeframe of less than 24 hours that he was to die and sympathizing with Harrow's emotional turmoil, he chose anger and pride. Viren also is very much a narcissist with a lot of ambition, which future episodes also show. So, while I feel his attempt at self-sacrifice was sincere, he lacked the moral character to follow through and he let his darker ambitions take over.

Robert Bonfante

It seems Viren had a change of heart about taking the King's place himself with his spell, to the point that he was saying a likely last farewell to both of his children. I even wonder if the King realised this himself and his putting Viren down was a means of severing that friendship to prevent that line of thinking.

Craig Payne

I was always under the impression that Viren had decided to offer to sacrifice himself for Harrow's sake with the soulfang. Before, Harrow objected to the plan in part because it meant that some other person would be forced to die in his place. Viren said whoever did it would be a volunteer, that anyone there would gladly sacrifice themselves for him. And Harrow countered to basically ask if that meant Viren would be willing to make that sacrifice. At the time Viren hesitated, but in this episode we see him reflect. He tells Claudia goodbye, that he's realized he needs to show his loyalty to Harrow, in the name of the relationship they've had. All his behavior up until Harrow makes him get on his knees implies that he was straight up going to offer to die so that Harrow could live. He never gets the words out, but I think it's pretty clear that's what he was going to do. Harrow's response in that scene always confused me, I'll admit. I think it's mostly leftover impatience after Viren's initial offer with the soulfang, but reinforcing the fact that he's a "servant" did feel pretty at odds with their seemingly established relationship. IDK. None of this is meant to downplay Viren's very shady actions. But it shows that there's more to him than just being an evil dark mage.

cosmotron

Hope its ok to info dump. Just to clarify and Vernin said this last episode I think that the reason they took out the dragon prince egg is he was going to grow up to be the most powerful dragon in the world and I think Claudia calling the egg a weapon is referring to that. It's worrying about the new dragon coming after the kingdom that killed his father. Also says a little about the mindset of vernin that he presumably taught his daughter to view magic and magical things as weapons

Suplee215

Glad you are strongly considering picking this up after TOH. Something to look forward to next summer.
