It also adds more weight to events a couple episodes ago - Eda's mom's strong reaction to the healing coven not being able to help, and Eda running away as much out of guilt and shame as fear. I wonder if there are other examples of 'writing backwards' and putting the effect before the cause in this show?

2023-03-28 18:12:14 +0000 UTCSomething that I don't really see a lot of people talking about anywhere, is that the Owl Beast itself has PTSD. That PERSON captured the Owl Beast using fireworks and turned it into the scroll. Then when Eda's Dad used the fireworks, it triggered the Owl Beast, who perceived the situation as threatening, therefore triggering fight/flight/freeze, and as we know, the Owl Beast leans heavily towards Fight in that context. It's not something that's too obvious. I only picked up on it because I have PTSD myself, and that's a big thing. Something can trigger you, and you may not realise why until later. That's what happened here. We saw the trigger in Eda's life, THEN received the context. The fact that all this means that both Eda and the Owl Beast are cursed with EACH OTHER is a big thing. That also puts context into the Owl Beast flying away even though they're tied together in their shared subconscious. The Owl Beast viewed Eda as as much of a threat/danger as Eda viewed the Owl Beast. ...... Thank you for reading my Ted Talk :)

2023-03-27 19:07:53 +0000 UTCI’ve always loved the depiction of Eda cuddling with the cute little Owl Beast as a metaphor for accepting your disability. A few years before this show even existed I was going through DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) and for one of the projects we had to come up with ways of like, identifying our emotions; what we were feeling, how intense the feeling was, etc. I decided to pick an animal to represent each emotion. Because I love animals so much, I did this as a way to associate emotions I wanted to avoid with things that I loved, as a way of accepting those emotions and caring for the part of myself that was feeling them. Like I chose a basset hound to represent sadness—not because I think basset hounds are inherently sad all the time, but their droopy faces do have a sort of Eeyore quality to them. Iirc I even chose an owl for one of the emotions, fear, because of this one I saw that had these wide, terrified-looking eyes.

2023-03-27 18:45:53 +0000 UTCAs an adopted person who knows almost nothing about my birthfather King’s story in this episode has always really resonated with me. It reminds me of the time in a science class I think in Middle School when we were learning about DNA. For one assignment we were supposed to compare our physical traits with those of our parents to see what we got from each of them and I didn’t know what to do for my assignment. I can’t remember what the teacher told me for that assignment, but I also remember an assignment for I think a different class where we were supposed to ask our parents about the country/countries their ancestors came from. I was told to just use my adoptive parents’ ancestries and for me it took what was supposed to be a fun assignment and made it frustrating. I knew a bit about my birthmother’s ancestry, and most of it was different from both of my parents’ so I knew the assignment wouldn’t be accurate.

From Hottys filled caulkborad, the things on edas desk, and there's almost always a quick joke every now and again. I LOVE how we get a glimpse of EVERYONES bedrooms in season 2, and you get so much more about the characters. Like photos of them from side plots we have assume they did in between episodes.

Filler episodes are unrelated to the main plot, AND don't significantly alter the relations between the characters. So many things happened in this episode, that effect the characters in meaningful ways moving forward. Lumity, Harpie Eda, and King's Powers are all from this episode. Literally the furthest thing from a filler episode.
