I highly believe's Light's tears were genuine when his dad died and he dropped the notebook and pen. Even though he knew it was coming and was trying desperately to spin it to his advantage, he was not prepared to deal with it

2023-04-13 12:27:06 +0000 UTCAlso the reason Light can't kill Mello is because he never sees his face. Lights father approaches Mello without his mask where the cameras are and when the rest of the task force come in Mello is wearing a gas mask. All Light has seen is a sketch of Mello

2023-04-13 04:10:24 +0000 UTCWhen Light says "If dad writes a name then when the time comes...." he means he would have to write his dads name in the death note in 13 days to enforce the fake rule that cleared him. He basically resolved to kill his own dad at that point.

2023-04-13 03:51:29 +0000 UTCI think y'all think Light's dad said the name or spelling out loud over comms when he was just musing to himself. That's why Light is desperate to get the name he knows on paper in the death note before he dies.
