I'm an elementary school teacher. With summer approaching, I am going to get into summer reading. I have had a hard time concentrating on fiction stories, but I'm currently loving non-fiction. Add a kid, I devoured the behind the scenes and DVD commentaries. Could you recommend any non fiction movie books? They could revolve around a specific movie, a director, an actor, I'm not fussy. Keep doing what you do best. Your discussions, especially your disagreements, have made me a better communicator to my wife, my daughter's, and students. Matt London, Canada

The Hyperion series! Most creative and interesting version of time travel and its knock on effects I’ve ever seen/read. Top 3 book series for me.

Thoughts on the Netflix-owned Paris Theatre showing Prime Video streams at some of their screenings? https://www.reddit.com/r/nyc/s/JBo6FPOGBb

Sam Raudabaugh

What band or artist would you want most to see perform at the sphere in Vegas?

John Terranova

I watched it for the first time last year and he holds up much better than I expected

John Terranova

Jeff/Devindra if you did try the what if story, I worked on that. Totally cool if it wasn’t for you but a lot of fun working on a project for a device that hadn’t even been announced to the public yet

John Terranova

Jeff/Devindra - how often are you using the Apple Vision Pro? Have you tried the new interactive what if episode. Seems like that could be something new for media and possibly the killer app.

Neal Mahoney

Hi Dave, Devindra and Jeff! I wanted to ask you what are your favorite types of restaurants (dives, fancy, takeout, fast food spots, food trucks, etc) and what are your favorite food movies/food scenes from movies or tv? I love to cook, i love watching content about cooking, especially when it’s captured well in movies. I’m inspired by people like Bourdain, Jonathan Gold, Dave Chang, Roy Choi, etc. Films that come to mind are Chef, Boiling Point, The Big Night, The Taste of Things, The Bear, etc. I’m from New Jersey and grew up surrounded by diners. They’re my favorite places to eat, my favorite kind of restaurant. Here’s my reason for loving diners and maybe you could share your reasons for loving the types of places you do: Growing up in New Jersey, diners have always been a piece of furniture in my life. I’ve collected cherished memories of breakfasts, brunches and dinners w assorted family and friends at classic diner spots in south jersey, like ponzios, Olga’s, the country club diner, voorhees diner, marlton diner. I love the genuineness, the lack of pretense, the open-endedness, and the ease. I love the encyclopedic menus: the idea that you can get eggs over easy, home fries and a waffle for dinner, while your dad gets crab cakes with a side of spaghetti in red sauce, your mom gets a tuna club w a pickle spear and homemade potato chips, your brother gets a blackened chicken Caesar salad with fries, and your grandpa gets a NY Strip medium, w garlic broccoli and carrots. A menagerie of beverages populate the worn pine 4 top: chocolate malt milkshake, steaming decaf black, root beer, unsweetened iced tea w lemon, and a Diet Coke with no ice. A diner exists in this beautifully liminal space between expectation and fundamental nourishment- nobody goes to a diner expecting the best meal of his life, yet the diner often surprises, delivering unfettered pleasure beyond its supposed bounds, punching above its weight. The diner is the culinary every man, the gastronomic underdog, amassing subtle victories over unsuspecting guests w perpetual jabs of plump hotcakes and crisped bacon over fluffy eggs. The best diners are an extension of home, summoning feelings of comfort and nostalgia. The cook, a burly, Swiss Army knife beast, negotiates the grease soaked kitchen like a decorated veteran of war, employing guerrilla tactics to keep up with the hurried influx of orders from all corners of the menu. Amidst the hiss of the broiler and the roar of the flames the cook moves swiftly. Armed with sharp knives and spatulas, and speckled with vegetable oil and the confidence of a thousand men, he looms large over the warming griddle, deftly prepared for anything and everything that could come his way. Much love to the filmcast, thanks for everything you do, and keep up the great work!

They can’t answer everyone’s questions, and I assume they’re spending as much time on questions as they care to. Them’s the breaks, just gotta deal with it

DarmineDoggyDoor

There should definitely entire 45 minute After Darks dedicated to answering questions. I seem to recall they used to do that a few years ago, but now most After Darks have 1-2 questions + a movie/TV review, with an episode where they just chat on random topics thrown in once every few months. Never an After Dark 100% dedicated to answering these questions anymore.

Papool Chaudhari

Maybe it is usually adjusted. But it's not explicitly mentioned on the podcast and it seems unlikely that so many box office records would be broken if it was adjusted. People aren't going to the theater like they used to.

Tom Dawson

Yeah there are sooooooo many old episodes I wish I could hear! Like the game changing Dark Knight review they did with Kevin Smith. That changed the fate of the podcast!!

Kai Ellis

That's interesting! Whenever I hear current box office figures compared to figures from the past it almost always includes adjustments for inflation.

Kai Ellis

Thank you Jeff, Devindra and David you guys have provided endless fun for decades. I recently had my first kid and as you can imagine movies and tv shows have taken a back seat. When I get these small windows of entertainment I’ve got a chance to watch both The Gentleman on Netflix and Gen V on Prime Video. I’m not sure whether it’s the limited time available to enjoy these but my level of enjoyment and engagement for both of the shows shot up significantly (it helped that the shows were great) Have you guys enjoyed any movies or tv shows under a time and mental energy crunch? Never stop the show 😁 Cheers Shankkar Brisbane, Australia

Shankkar S

As a long time listener I can tell you what started the limericks. Dave was absent for a few weeks (I think he'd been out recovering from surgery), and when he returned he gave his thoughts on a bunch of different things he'd been watching in limerick form (I think he'd been bored recovering from the surgery). So basically he had a bunch of limericks prepared and read them on the show. Jeff in particular thought this was delightful, and the next week he too provided a limerick review, and he's been doing them ever since. I can't remember exactly when this was though, but maybe Dave can help pinpoint it if he recalls when he was out for surgery (I think that was why he was absent for a few weeks, he also missed some time once because of something like overwork burnout or something).

Stranger2Reality

What are your top 3 ranked theater pet peeves? I basically can't watch a movie if I hear people whispering, but I DGAF about someone looking at their phones (on low brightness). I have friends that are the exact opposite. For me, I think my top three would be: 1: People whispering 2: People eating loudly (especially food with a plastic wrapper. And they should be bannd from the theater if they decide to open the wrapper after the movie has started) 3: Strangers choosing a seat right next to me when the theater is basically empty . . 1,000: people quickly checking their phone with brightness up . . 1,000,000: people quickly checking their phone on low brightness

Ben Wesorick

Hi folks! What do you think is holding directors back from incorporating intermission into their films? There are myriad directors who talk effusively about the need and urgency of preserving the cinematic experience on the big screen. Moreover, the average run time of big budget films is at a historical high. And yet, the current intermissionless film really only drives one round of food and drink purchases, at the beginning! Shouldn’t the film industry be working harder to help monitize the theatrical experience on behalf of the theater companies? Love the show —Jordan from Atlanta

Jordan Gray

Two slightly related questions. You can address any of the points you'd care to discuss. 1) Can you talk about the split from slashfilm and how you feel that has worked out? Is The Filmcast owned by Dave (or all 3 of you?), or another company? If it's owned by you guys, would you want to be bought or do you prefer not having bosses? 2) As an early adopter Patron, I haven't listened to any non-Patreon feeds in quite a while now. How is the ad side of the podcast post-slashfilm? I run a mobile game publisher, so I'm familiar with the adtech industry for that area. I've always wondered if it's similar to running ads on your inventory in the podcasting world. I'm so intensely curious about the business side of podcasting! Thanks, I really enjoy the podcast. :)

Hank Patton

No shade but why do you call out for questions and only answer just 2 or 3 of them during the show? Have you considered a full show devoted to answering all or most of the questions put forth here? It’s silly to ask patrons to repost questions that don’t get answered only to have you not answer them, and request them to be reposted for next time where they’ll go unanswered.

AF

I want to know what you think about having movie posters and screenshots as the predominant way we navigate and select our entertainment options these days. Booking a seat in a theater's app is guided by movie posters. Streaming services use screenshots or movie posters in their navigation as well. I come from a time when posters and images and trailers were just in advertising messaging. When going to a theater, we would use movie phone, newspapers, or a theater marquee. And I thought we all knew that the box art on the movies in the video rental store was an unreliable way for us to decided on what to watch. Modern digital services seem to have forgotten this lesson and are using these these advertising images as the primary guide of our decision making process. I feel like this has contributed to our feelings of being overwhelmed by choice in these digital apps.

Eric Feay

What is the “worst” piece of media given a positive review by your co-hosts on the show? (I can’t come up with anything from Dave, but I remember being exasperated by Jeff’s recommendation for Netflix Dracula and Devindra’s glowing review of Matrix Resurrections.) Also, what is the “best” piece of media given a negative review by your cohosts?

Brian Deaton

Any favorite examples of regionalism in films? (ie, movies that really immerse you in a specific place). I live in Portland, Oregon and I love how movies like Pig really place themselves firmly in the culture and vibe of the city. Bonus points for shouting out non-NYC examples!

Calvin Hoff

How much do you think Hemsworth’s prosthetic nose affected Furiosa’s box office? When I saw it in the trailer I was immediately put off by it.

Brian Deaton

Why is there never a mention of inflation when it comes to discussing box office performance? 30 million 10 years ago is not the same as it is today. So it's comparing apples and oranges. Unless there's something I'm missing here...

Tom Dawson

We've heard the basics about Jeff's home theater, but I'd love to know more details! What's the seating like? Which projector? Ceiling mounted? How is everything controlled, a special remote system or home receiver? Also, how is Decindra's basement theater efforts coming?

Sergio Meyer

(This is a repost. Two months ago this was tied for the most "Liked" comment with 9 likes and highly liked last month, so people want this discussion on the show!) I think the show should address, on a main episode (or an after dark, something!), that you don't use hashtag slashtag anymore and officially encourage one single alternative method to recommend movies, whether that be emails or a threads post or whatever. Preferably one that you 3 all see, like the way you all saw slashtag tweets before Elon Musk destroyed twitter. It's crazy to me that the show has been silent on hashtag slashtag for over a year now. It used to be a BIG part of the show! People should be told on a main episode (or an after dark, I guess) what the single preferred method is now and that should be promoted the way hashtag slashtag was promoted each and every week for YEARS. And to also address whether the voicemail line is ever checked anymore and if it will ever be used again (if not, just officially kill it then.). Voicemail number is listed in the show notes every episode but a voicemail hasn't been played on the show for YEARS. We're LONG overdue for this sort of housekeeping on a main episode (or after dark) re: hashtag slashtag and voicemails. Thanks!

Papool Chaudhari

Each of you have varying levels of experience with “conventional” media organizations and being independent content creators. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each and have you developed a preference?

Eric Thompson

What did you think of the opening credits of Furiosa using the same sounds and footage as Fury Road?

Andy Siegel

Hey guys, but specifically Dave. I just started using the 1 Second Everyday app to document the end of wife's pregnancy and the first weeks of my son's life. It's been fun and I'm hoping to stick with it for at least a year or longer. Dave, I know that you've used the app for several years at this point, which leads me to my question(s): any pro-tips? Anything you wish you had started doing at the beginning that you're doing now? Or anything that you think ends up being pretty cool in the end result? Appreciate any and all pieces of 1SE advice!

Conor Roach

Do you all watch the end credit scroll? I used to leave as soon as a movie ended, but over the last 10 years or so, I started to stay. Marvel popularizing the end credit stinger was what started it, but at a certain point that became less of a factor. Now, my wife and I always stay, stinger or not. Our thought process is along the lines of "at the end of the day, it's remarkable that all these people helped make this movie." Do I remember *every* person's name? No way. But, I do feel a duty to recognize, in my own personal way, the people who worked on the movie. In addition, you generally get some cool music, a clue as to where the movie was filmed, or a moment to contemplate what you've just watched. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Are we weird for staying? Should we dump our popcorn on the floor and bolt like everyone else? Cheers! Jon p.s. Shout out to Jordan Anastasi, Boom Operator on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

aGuyWhoPatsDogs

With the rumors of Justin Lin directing the next Spider-Man movie, who would you ideally like to see direct it? Thx :)

Phoenix Bauer

Could we ever get access to an RSS Feed with Every Episode of the Filmcast back Catalog??? I’m not even sure how to access older episodes currently

Max Sloth

You're given $30 million. To make a movie. About The Film cast. It must be feature length and include at least one reasonably big star. The rest, gentlemen, I leave to you... What genre? Who directs? Who does the score? Will there be a "songs from and inspired by" soundtrack? Netflix or Theater? If theater, does it deserve IMAX? And most of all - will there be a movie tie in popcorn bucket?

Kai Ellis

Hey, guys! Love the show! I have a question for Jeff. The other day, I went back to listen to an old episode of the podcast (Mad Mad: Fury Road from 2015). Conspicuously missing was a Jeff limerick. I know that you have a book coming out, but perhaps as a teaser could you tell us... 1) What made you decide to start writing limericks? 2) For which movie did you write your very first limerick? Could you share it with us? I enjoy the limericks so much. They are expertly crafted and super fun. Thank you for bringing such joy into the lives of so many people!

Matt Norell

I'm gonna second this, I love that godforsaken movie so much

Margaret Peffy Margie Maggie

What were Jeff and especially his kids thoughts on the new live action Avatar: The Last Airbender show? We heard Devindra’s take and Jeff said he would come back and update us but I don’t think we ever got the update.

Gareth

Are you familiar with “The Ricky Gervais Show”? It started off as a podcast, and then it became a TV show on HBO. Whatever you feel about Gervais nowadays, my comment is about the format of the show: they took the audio from the podcast and created animations on top of it. It visually depicts Gervais and his co-hosts in a podcast studio, and then it would cut to “recreations” of whatever (often absurd) situations they were talking about. Clips abound on YouTube if my description doesn’t suffice. I’ve been daydreaming about making something similar for the Filmcast. The scenes that I imagine usually involve Jeff cracking up. Some examples: - Episode 611 - Dave demonstrates his silent mouse by not demonstrating it. (“I’m not even going to do it.”) - Episode 574 - Dave is unable to finish his workout routine (which he committed to memory) due to the emotional impact of a documentary about a hospital during COVID - Episode 621 - Devindra teaches us how to pronounce “Mads Mikkelson” (“You’re eating the D”) The trouble is, I have no animation skills to speak of. So I thought I’d just throw this idea out there. Anyone want to do it? Anyone? Albert from Canada

Hi filmcast! David Lynch just announced that he will have something to “see and hear” on June 5. Are you guys David Lynch fans? My guess is Devindra is and David and Jeff, not so much. If so what is your favorite David Lynch project? Do you have any guesses or hopes on what his new project could be? Love the show! Thom from Des Moines

THOMAS HARLOW

Hello Filmcast. I am in the summer movie wager for the second time this year and I was wondering if there would be a possibility each year to follow along with friends of the show and add their usernames to my personal leaderboards? From watching TRS back in the day, I guess that Dan Trachtenberg and Alex Albrecht probably still participate in the wager annually and it would be cool to see what others in the industry place in their lists. Last year my colleague and I participated in the wager and I lost (to be fair I had Indy as #1). I was subjected to a screening of Jodorowski's Holy Mountain (great movie), which was playing locally at the time. Love the show and was hoping to find out if this request would be possible each year. Jonathan from Ottawa, Canada.

Watched Just. One. Mile. and wondering how many "loops" could the crew do with similar rules. In the documentary, the participants have 20mins to run 1-mile. For Dave, host/produce a 60-minute podcast with 30-minutes to upload and prepare for the next. Must be the quality of what you currently put out (which is good!). How many are you filling our feeds with? For Devindra, fly from Atlanta to New York then back, repeat. Once you depart a plane, you board another. Flights are always full and there's at least one stereotypical flight annoyance; crying baby, entitled passenger, out of commission bathroom, etc. Oh! And you forgot all your devices. 1-loop is a round trip, how many are you making? For Jeff, well the mile loop from the documentary! How many loops do you think you could pull of? Edit: Also, check out Girls State (Apple TV+) when you can! I loved your recommendation of Boys State awhile back and I think this one surpasses it.

Kyle Schlenker

If you have a choice do you go AMC Dolby or IMAX and why?

Tammy Conrad

What is the origin of Dave saying “Boom Goes the Dynamite” during his patented bait and switch jokes? My understanding is that the phrase is associated with Brian Collins’ viral sports broadcast, but how did it turn into the name of David’s joke?

Benjamin Nicholes

Devindra has mentioned several times on the show that he takes an hour to clean his kitchen every night. What's that cleaning routine look like? Are the rest of us living in substandard dirty kitchens? And what is the ideal media to accompany kitchen cleaning time?

Dan Mulhall

Dear Filmcasters As someone who loved the 2011 matiné Tintin & The Secret of the unicorn, it bums me out tremendously that the sequel is seemingly not gonna happen, much like Coyote Vs Acme. Do you have an anticpated project like this?

Calvin Jones

Hello Gents — any thoughts on CinemaScope screens for home theaters? These are also sometimes called constant height screens. I never hear this discussed, but it eliminates the black bars in the top and bottom (thus the term constant height) and effectively moves the unused screen space to the side for 1.85/Flat/19x9/4x3 programming.) It is far less distracting. This is the way screens are configured in movie theaters. It’s also easy to mask the sides with curtains (and hard to mask the top and bottom.) I have one of these in my home theater, and it is truly amazing, especially for those big budget widescreen moves and a lot of new tv shows (like the Star Trek shows, The Boys, The Mandalorian, etc.) I means you need a projector with an adjustable lens, but many have lens’ that also allow saved presets so you can easily toggle between full height programming (old school 4x3, modern tv at 16x9) and wider screen programming (2.0, 2.35 and 2.39.) I have one if these screens and it radically improves the viewing experience for the wider formats. To me, more important than 4k and more important than HDR. Anyway … sorry such a long post! Brian from Fairfield CT

PLEASE REVIEW WATERWORLD I think it was around the time Avatar The Way of Water was coming out you guys mentioned Waterworld and talked about reviewing it, but you never did. With HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA coming out it's the perfect time for a Costner double feature and I think it would be fascinating to look back at that disaster almost 30 years later

Alejandro G

Curious on your thoughts on seeing movies with a crowd. I know that we all are weary of being in a crowded theater these days, since the beginning of the pandemic, but I also think we can't deny that watching with a crowd can change your opinion on a movie. The tension of the crowd can make a movie more suspense or the laughter can make a scene funnier. Also inconsiderate people can make make a movie much worse. So how much does the movie watching experience color your opinion of the movie and should that outside manipulation be held against the movie, whether good or bad?

Mitchipedia

Hey guys! My wife and I love watching movies with a twist/ psychological thrillers. What are your favorite films with a twist? Also thanks for existing and always making my day when it comes to all things film, Jeff’s limericks , Devindra’s wittiness and of course Dave’s realness. You guys are awesome!!!!

Whitney Moreno

Hey there! I’m moving across town soon. This is my first move since I have had a child. We have a lot more stuff now! Where did it all come from!? Many years ago when I was single I only had what I referred to as “1 Toyota Tacoma worth of stuff” and it was very easy to pack it in the truck and roll out. Nowadays, it’s a bit more complicated. Anyway, do you have any moving stories worth sharing with the listeners? P.S. We are hiring movers for the furniture and using a U-Haul to move all our small stuff. We are not asking any of our friends to help us move to avoid losing our friends. We are boarding the dog for the weekend of the move. I think this is the optimal way to move. Any other tips?

Tyler Glaze

Did you all watch "Everybody's in L.A." on Netflix and what were your thoughts?

Matthew Henshaw

The decline of Jeffs dad jokes needs to be studied and examined. 4 years ago they would laugh. 3 years ago they would chuckle. 2 years ago groans. Now the other hosts just don't talk and allow a few seconds to pass and let Jeffs not funny pun to die on its own.

Cardassian Vexillology

Do you ever watch shows like Bridgerton or other period piece series? (E.g. Masterpiece Classic) Do your spouses?

Kate Rumsey

This has been on my mind a lot lately - how much, if at all, should the context or conditions in which a film, or piece of art, was made determine how “good” it is? For example, if a movie is just “okay” in your opinion, and then you learn about the background of the movie, or things the production went through, or hardships the writer/director/actors overcame, should it change your rating? Or another example, if you learn the movie was one of the first to try a new writing or filming technique, should that sway your feelings? To put it in another way - should learning the backstory of a film or piece of art be taken into consideration on how “good” it is or merely enhance it?

Steven Kennick

Hey guys, Can you share a moment when a movie scene or concept provided a revelation or epiphany that changed your perspective on a life issue? A recent one for me was from ARRIVAL. The way it shows how language shapes our perception made me appreciate different cultures even more. And you?

Daniel Cabral

Also books to do with time travel if you have an interest in reading. I am an avid reader and I am hunting down every novel/short story to do with time travel.

Jenis Mistry

What are your favourite films/TV shows to do with time travel? I won’t give my suggestions so as not to colour your views. Would love to hear ya’ll thoughts. Long time listener, you guys are the best and a highlight of my podcast week! Regards Jenis from the UK
