Ep. 777 - Hit Man

Comments

Devindra is wrong on so many levels. I think he’s too easy on this movie. Also the Acolyte praise was pretty cringe. I find it surprising they didn’t even talk about Leslye Headland being the Darth Vader to the palatine that was Weinstein.

It's impressive how Jeff sometimes misses a movie completely. Like this is mostly a genre romantic comedy. Don't take the moral "lessons" to seriously, guys 😆 The movie couldn't have painted that cop dirtier.

Mountain of Conflict

I’m with Dave and Jeff on this one. Movie wasn’t that deep, but entertaining nonetheless

I think Fixers is probably a “job” that only exists in movies like Hit Men. Now coming from someone who would say Richard Linklater is one of my, if not my most, favourite directors. It feels like Devindra is being disingenuous here because a lot of the things he said are not in the movie. He has done a lot of work that I don’t think the movie was doing.

Ok so the BOOM riff about Ashley Madison and Jim Henson was one of the funniest that's ever been done. I was dying 😂 HOWEVER - The irony is that Henson absolutely would have belonged in the Ashley Madison documentary. He was a philandering lothario whose legend, perhaps rightly, overshadows much of that bad behavior.

Kai Ellis

Wow; wild conversation on Hit Man. I’m with Devindra on this one.

Jay Baruchel as the believable dork version

Movie recommendation: Just re-watched one of the best Swedish movies in my opinion called "Jägarna" (could be translated as The Hunters) from 1996. It's a about the policeman Erik who returns to his hometown in northern part of Sweden after his father dies. He decides to stay and decides to look into a series of poaching that no one seems that interested into clearing up. I think it's a really solid and suspenseful thriller that still holds up. Strongly recommended. It should be available on Amazon Prime for US-subscribers. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116736/?ref_=ext_shr

I have been listening to this podcast for almost a decade. This episode was the first time, I had to stop listening to the conversation out of frustration. I relate to Devindra, and so disagree with Jeff and Dave’s reading of Hitman. It’s not reading into the film to say the movie is about the moral conflicts. It’s all in the literal text, if anything almost to a fault. When Gary talks about the Id and the super ego and the conflict between them and the ego negotiating them, he is alluding to Ron and Gary and finding the fusion of them. Gary crosses moral lines into dark and darker shades of grey throughout the film, which is symbolic of actualizing / turning into Ron; it is a fable of a man who is nothing but super ego turning into one that is Id. I think it is clear the end is suppose to leave the audience sitting with the “happy ending” in a “Crimes and Misdemeanors” sort of way. It almost cheekily rubs our face in the “happy ever after” in the final scene with their allusions to their crime as they talk to their child about how they met. Wanting this film to dramatize Gary’s struggles to “be Ron” as a difficult acting feat to accomplish is like reading a philosophical novel like Candide or The Stranger and being mad it doesnt focus more on the emotional motivations of the characters rather than the ideas they are stand ins to represent. Moreover its wanting this film to hit the same pygmalion myth beats we’ve seen a thousand times before in romantic comedies. Rather than have Gary always succeed in his presentation of Ron, should the movie instead have Gary’s illusion fall apart in front of his romantic interest leading to a stereotypical break up scene? If so, let’s throw in a rush to an airport and a public profession of love scene at while we are at it then… This is a very unique movie, one that is blending the film equivalent of a novel of ideas (something like Waking Life) with a sexy rom com. And I love it for that originality of tone and focus.

Probably around 4-5 times as a guest.

I was already listening to the Slashfilmcast pre-Jeff for many years…but was a huge fan of Jeff from TRS. So when Jeff became an official co-host of the Slashfilmcast, it felt like a match made in heaven for me! I feel like Jeff joining the podcast brought in the perfect balance of humor and heart and elevated the show to a new level. So, so grateful for Jeff coming onboard 10 years ago!

I'm really enjoying Dave's continued viewing of the original Apes series, but SPOILERS for the ending of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes below I was hoping that Dave would have had a chance to watch the original, unrated version of Conquest on the bluray collection. I haven't seen it myself, but in addition to being much more violent, it ends with bludgeoning instead of mercy. According to one of the bonus featurettes included with the reboot trilogy's War For The Planet of the Apes, the studio was worried about inciting race riots (and/or getting a Restricted rating), and so we ended up in the theatrical version with the rather incongruous (and redubbed) speech that Caesar gives at the end.

I love seeing the similar notes of having started with Jeff. My recollection is that my first ever episode was the one in which Jeff was named as a permanent co-host. One of the best decisions ever made was to start listing to and following the Filmcast (ne: Slashfilmcast)

I think it’s fun to listen to the pre spoiler for a movie that releases later in the week and then re listen to pre spoiler thoughts and dive into spoilers. Helps me know how to prioritize when to watch and expectations

John Terranova

Anyone know how many times Jeff was on the show before becoming an official host? I listened before Jeff but can’t remember when I first listened

John Terranova

I also started listening when Jeff came over. Happy to of never missed an episode over what I guess has been 10 years now!

DAAAAVE!!!! Screendrafts just did a Planet of Apes draft! Check it out.

So excited to hear Devindra talking about Haikyu!! I couldn't agree more regarding the "negative" reviews out there. It's a direct continuation of 4 seasons of the anime, so it feels weird to watch and review it without that context. I'll also add that the sound design was fantastic. The thud of a return, the squeak of shoes, the smack of a spike. I found myself holding my breath when the sound faded out and they focused on the players' breathing. It all sounded great. This was the first anime I've seen in theaters, and I had a blast. Cannot wait for the Blue Lock movie coming to theaters in a few months, another awesome sports anime (and only 1 season.)

What’s great about Haikyuu!! Is that ALL the character development happens through the matches there’s no fluff

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Jeff, Haikyuu!! Is amazing watch it

I actually got into the (Slash)Filmcast because of Jeff! I was listening to gaming podcast Weekend Confirmed at the time which he hosted with Garnett Lee and I recall him mentioning guesting on the Slashfilmcast, so I checked that out and the rest is history. Thanks Jeff and congrats on 10 years!

Outlandish Beats

One of my core childhood memories is my dad coming home from work and telling my brother and I that Jim Henson had died. I need to watch that documentary.

Nervous_NRG

10 years…..I Cannata believe it

Cameron Stewart

Sorry Davenatta, Devindra is right about this one.

Jeff: “maybe some day.” Laughed out loud at that one

Have many people have actually been able to see this? Feels like it's in very limited release (no AMC theaters near me are showing it), and won't be on Netflix until Friday. Seems weird to review this before most people can see it, but I'm guessing it's cause there wasn't much else of note this past week, and next week will be Bad Boys.
