After Dark: Summer Movie Wager Check-In, Crying During Movies, The Good Liar, Equine Therapy and Domestic Animals

[Note: This week's After Dark comes a bit early to make a little space before our Deadpool/Wolverine review drops early for you on Friday]

The Filmcast: After Dark is the bonus show where we talk about a variety of random topics that didn't make it into the main podcast (including your questions and what's going on in our lives).

In this episode, David and Jeff discuss the state of the summer movie wager, their thoughts on crying during movies and showing emotion to children, and why Jeff doesn't like having domestic pets.

Just a correction for what was said on this podcast. The plot of Falling Down was not about a guy bored with his job, it was a former defense contractor who'd been laid off because the cold war was over. He'd been an abusive husband/father so he was divorced from his wife and had been living with his mother, and when he lost his job he was too ashamed to tell her, so he kept pretending he still had it, and got dressed and left every day like he was still going to work. I'm not defending that movie at all, just clarifying the plot as the hosts all seemed to misremember it. Also, regarding 24, I think the issue with that show was that it immediately collapsed under the weight of its premise, in that it was caught between being relatively realistic in depicting an entire day in real time, and needing to come up with something exciting for every single hour of the day. This led to stuff like Jack rescuing his wife and kid midway through Day 1, but since they were main characters they then had to each go off and have a second wild adventure with the rest of the day, rather than just going home and going to sleep. Or like the one season where a nuclear bomb went off in LA, and then two hours later nobody seemed to care anymore cause the president's plane was hijacked (or whatever). It was an interesting premise for a show, but the premise quickly made it pretty ridiculous, almost by necessity.

It looks like Dave may be back in the running for the Summer Movie Wager, with the gigantic opening weekend that Deadpool & Wolverine had, although it's gonna have to keep it up to top Inside Out 2. I'm not totally sure if it becoming the top movie of the summer would be enough to put Dave at the top or not, but it might. It'll definitely be #1 or #2 though, that much is for sure. The only drama left is to see where it finishes up, and then also how Trap and Alien Romulus do, to see if they can knock off Garfield or The Fall Guy. We'll probably have a good idea about where D&W will end up in about a week. It's getting exciting!

Stranger2Reality

Next year we need Jeff to make 2 lists. A from the heart list and his actual picks for the movie wager

Jeff H

I'm not sure if this falls squarely on Jeff's kink but the documentary unchained about the tour de france in Netflix is really good.

Iker Maruri

Really hope you both follow through with the Meru screening! Would love to hear your thoughts. Free Solo is great, but this really has depth and complexity.

Nathaniel St. Clair

Regarding the Free Solo discussion, Alex Honnold (climber featured in that film) has been pretty open about the need for death and grief in climbing to be openly discussed as it’s a huge part of the sport. Although I don’t believe he has explicitly said he would want the movie to be released regardless of whether he lived, I believe he would. In a way, it immortalizes and honors the climber and their accomplishments. Just my two cents

Tony Disarufino

We’ve had a dog for 12 years, he’s about 18 months older than our first kid, so they’ve always had a pet and it’s been great for them, great for the family to take him out on walks. He’ll die likely in the next 2-3 years and then I think I’m done with dogs for a long while - he’s served his purpose perfectly, and the kids will have a cry for a few days then move on.

Mark P

Jeff's feeling on not having a pet makes perfect sense. I have a dog, and I love him to bits, but to a small extent, owning a dog has some similar hassles of having a child. Your life becomes very routine oriented. It's much more difficult to do things spontaneously, and like Jeff said, there's all the up keep, of health, diet, hygiene and etc. Further more, the smartest dog is only roughly as smart as a 4 year old, and depending on the dog, it might be able to run 20km an hour; it might be able to destroy your house; it might be able to bite and hurt someone. Also, you're not able to effectively communicate with it, unless you put in the time to train. Furthermore there's are a plethora of behavioral problems they can get into if you're not careful. Owning a dog is an incredible amount of joy (I'd argue because of the work and the relationship building), but at the same time it's also a mix bag of all the things I just mentioned for 10 to 15 years. Folks who push others to get a pet because they love their own, are kind of like parents who push others to have a child, extremely annoying.

Bruce Chang

Another way to look at it is that a lot of people rush into getting a pet and then are not prepared for all the challenges it entails. This often leads to a pet living in various degrees of sub-par conditions. Jeff is aware of those challenges and feels he is not up for taking them on. Seems fair to me (even if it’s not the way I view owning a pet for myself)

Alex

You basically called me “insane” — which is insane :) I remember the details a typical trailer reveals. It ruins the plot, the character arcs, the tension and curiosity I have as a viewer. If it’s a comedy, numerous punchlines are spoiled in trailers, too. Are you someone who reads ahead of a work of written fiction (per my comment)?

J Hay

People who don’t want pets: red flag. 🚩

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Yeah man it’s super sad and as a parent it’s even worse to think it’s because he doesn’t have the courage to deal with loss.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Jeff’s foregone conclusion about pets is sad. He’s so certain about an outcome he’s never actually experienced, which seems weirdly irrational for him. I’ve known several people who were steadfastly “not a dog person” and then fell in love with them at some point, I’m certain Jeff would find it 1000% worth it but alas, he may never know

DarmineDoggyDoor

Jeff’s noise-gated laugh after Dave mentioned The New Mutants is why the Afterdarks are always worth listening to. Hilarious.

Alex

I always love and appreciate when you guys give space and time for Jeff to just talk. Please keep that up.

Cindy McIntyre

Also David, you need to look at your profile on Letterboxd and Stats for All Time to see the good statistics. Too bad you didn't answer the question why you don't relog movies. I asked you on there about Life.

Mountain of Conflict

We have a couple friends who have a 3 year old boy on the spectrum. They got him a doodle (untrained) and although the training part has been a lot for the couple, they've seen a huge change in their son. I could only imagine what a dog trained for this would be able to accomplish.

Brian

Jeff your candid personal stories are so fucking beautiful.

Kai Ellis

Couldn't agree more. I'm a spectrum kid and getting a companion dog changed my adult life.

Kai Ellis

For Jeff: I'd look into a companion dog for your little girl. The right one can do wonders for children/adults on the spectrum. Normally they come trained already. Just a thought, since she seems to be into Equine Therapy.

Brian

Agreed, I was just hedging in case the estimates are wrong. Really the only drama left this summer is with Trap and Alien Romulus. It looks like Peter or Germain are going to win. I'm guessing it'll be Peter again, but Germain is most likely going to have nailed the top 4 movies perfectly along with 6. His biggest mistake is going to have been putting Bad Boys at 10th (or leaving Garfield and If off completely). Peter is going to have got the top 3 movies exactly and will also nail 6 & 8. His biggest mistake will have been putting Twisters at #9.

Stranger2Reality

Amazing revelation that Jeff „I will not see any kind of marketing for a movie“ is watching the trailers on Netflix.

Mountain of Conflict

Deadpool 3 is forecast to open around $175m. Even poor legs gets it to $400m, good legs gets it to $450m +. It’ll certainly outgross Despicable 3.

Mark P

Jeff - I appreciate what you share about your life and experiences. My daughter is on the spectrum as well and does equine therapy. It helps her find her voice by communicating to the horses while she absolutely lights up being around such a majestic animal. I lit up listening to this as I totally relate to crying/tearing up at everything. Keep doing you.

Jason L

Hey you guys should watch “The Alpinist”. It’s an amazing documentary that you both would enjoy and answers some questions you guys had during this podcast. Love the show!

RONDA

Spoilers don't matter really if you think about it. My friend told me to watch game of thrones and spoiled the guy who gets his head cut off. When I watched the first season i enjoyed it and was still surprised. No one sits in a theater thinking about all the little details from the trailer the movie just washes over you and you are taken into the ride. The idea that someone is sitting in a movie theater stewing over a plot point they saw briefly touched on in a trailer they watched eailer in the weak is insane. Just live in the moment dude.

Cardassian Vexillology

I despise most trailers. For many, many years they have given away far too much of the plots of movies. If I think I’ll have some interest in an upcoming movie, I WILL NOT watch the trailer. It’s like skimming through a novel and reading the last page in “advance”. Do you think writers want people to know how the story goes? NO!

J Hay

Finding Dory outgrossed Captain America Civil War, Incredibles 2 outgrossed JW Fallen Kingdom, Toy Story 4 outgrossed Spider-Man Far From Home. I feel like some of you guys really underestimate Pixar’s Summer releases. Inside Out 2 being this big of a hit seemed guaranteed. I’m also on track to nail 6 or 7 of these perfectly for this years wager. It’s the best I’ve done since 2018, where I got 7 dead on.

Nicholas Ewers

I don’t know how it’s possible, but I think the After Darks are often better than the main shows. Love you guys.

David Grimm

Oh Jeff. I love you, man. You’ve made me cry nearly every episode for the past few and I’m better for it. My son is autistic, and I cry all the time for similar reasons. Going to look into equine therapy near us. Thank you for being so open, honest, true, and eloquent.

Brandon Lee Tenney

Funny how you mention Meru and Free Solo seemingly without realizing they're by the same directors!

Narushi (he·him)

Jeff has consistently said that no pixar movie has outgrossed a despicable me/minion movie in competing summers, when in fact back in 2015 Inside Out outgrossed Minions. History repeats itself.

Ryan Goodwin

Inside Out 2 is probably going to be the top movie of the summer, unless Deadpool & Wolverine is a Top Gun Maverick type hit. Now we're mainly waiting to see if Trap or Alien Romulus can make enough in the time frame to surpass Garfield and the Fall Guy to push those two out of the top 10. If they don't then the top 10 are most likely going to be: 1. Inside Out 2 2 & 3. Deadpool & Wolverine/Despicable Me 4 (unsure which will be which) 4. Twisters 5. Bad Boys Ride or Die 6. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 7. A Quiet Place Day One 8. If 9. The Fall Guy 10. The Garfield Movie
