Added 2024-08-01 12:00:12 +0000 UTC
The Filmcast: After Dark is the bonus show where we talk about a variety of random topics that didn't make it into the main podcast (including your questions and what's going on in our lives).
In this episode, David, Devindra, and Jeff discuss the big news that dropped at San Diego Comic-Con: Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU and playing Dr. Doom! We discuss how we feel about this news, and the creative/economic implications of it. 1

NY Jury: "hmm she stole his phone. Hmmm she tried to keep him from leaving the car hmm when he finally escaped she chased him for blocks. He is a black guy we gotta get him for something. Wait a minute exhibit C says her finger has a bruse!"
GULITY!

Don't steal people's phones and your finger won't get brused it's not rocket surgery. Jury convicted him because he was black man trying to escape a crazy white lady.

In regards to people talking trash about X2, we screened it at my movie theater recently and a customer came out complaining and told me he thought X-Men Origins: Wolverine was better and I wanted to ban him from the theater.

I know we're a ways out from the F4 release, but y'all should consider getting Brian Brushwood to guest on the review. He's also been on the "F4 should be a 60s period movie" train and is just a big F4 fan in general.

Good question. I honestly think it won't move. Whenever you hear talk about moving, it's always Comic Con using the threat as leverage to get what they want. Ultimately San Diego and the economy around it want it bad enough to do what it takes to keep it there. I think seeing it move would be interesting, but I just don't actually think it will happen.

My guess is it's probably, at least partially, an issue that good scripts that aren't based on existing IPs don't really get made much anymore, so maybe RDJ doesn't see a whole lot of other options. Even putting A List stars in non-IP movies doesn't guarantee anyone will see them (look at Babylon and Amsterdam as recent examples of this). About the only exceptions to this are maybe movies directed by Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino, but there's only so many of those movies upcoming by them.
Maybe RDJ feels like it's either this, something most people will never see and will be considered a flop, or "content" on Netflix. I go to the theater almost every week and I can tell you that the vast majority of the best movies that come out nowadays are ones 99% of people have never even heard of. These are movies that get a week, maybe two in a theater, and then likely vanish into the streaming void. How many people even heard of How to Blow Up a Pipeline last year, or Oddity this year? People who listen to this podcast, sure, but the general public doesn't know these movies. I think RDJ is probably just reflecting the reality of the marketplace right now.

Do you think Comic Con is going to stay in San Diego? I've never been (not a convention person), but it always sounds like they have trouble accommodating everyone who goes, as hotel room prices are super expensive. I know they're booked there for the next couple years, but there's talk they might move to LA. What do you think?

I'm not an expert in this, but the people in the box office subreddit know their stuff and they seem to think Inside Out 2 will probably still have the highest domestic total this year, just because of how it legged out. My money is still on Peter winning this year.

Marvel needs the Russos, the Russos need Marvel but Downey returning I don't get (aside from a lot of money). The man just won an Oscar and might win an Emmy, he doesn't need it like those other two.

I believe it was definitely a 90% financial decision to bring RDJ back and 10% creative decision. I definitely don't think it was the case that they went creatively exploring different ideas and ended up on bringing RDJ back but rather that they decided that they need him back and how can they creatively justify doing it. They know he was popular and carried most of the MCU-movies he was in. He's a safe bet to bring people into seats.
This just reeks of financial desperation on Marvel's/Disney's part. In one sense they are definitely betting big because as pointed out those movies has to be billion dollar earners for it to be worthwhile.
But I am with Devindra, boring as hell.

Sure! But my point still stands. If it was Adam Driver behind that mask at SDCC I’m sure I would have said “ah, cool!” and gone on with my day. But when I heard it was RDJ I was like “what the fuck?? What??” And spent the next hour talking to a friend about it and what it might mean. It’s not a “boring” choice, it’s a very bold and weird one! Will it work? I have no idea. I hope it does.

I've gone to each SDCC since 2008 and now am in my mid 40s. It's definitely tough on the body, but I still go and love it. I find it wild that our 3 hosts have such little interest today in SDCC.

I’m a bit baffled by the description of RDJ’s casting as “boring” - I agree that it feels like a desperation move, but I can’t think of a single actor they could have announced that would have had the sheer shocking what-the-fuckness as this. Cillian Murphy? Sure, I’m sure he would be great, because he always is, but with Scarecrow already on his CV, it’s not actually that bold or visionary. I’ve seen people lob Mads Mikkelsen around - also a great actor, also already in an MCU movie, and I’m sure I would have gone “oh, that’s cool” and not really given it much thought beyond that. RDJ is the last person anyone would have thought of and I’m really intrigued to see how it pans out. Might be terrible and stupid! We’ll see! But boring it isn’t.

I’m on team Jeff on this one. I’m excited about the possibilities and hopefully they start focusing on quality over quantity. One thing about RDJ is he brings a level of enthusiasm that attracts other actors that might have said no otherwise.
I do think Devindra is right that they should experiment more and take some wild swings, but there’s room for that and this new development too (not mutually exclusive).
The way they ended infinity war was b.a. and keeping the ramifications of endgame into the MCU had some interesting emotional impact on various characters (Spiderman, Loki, etc) so I wouldn’t say they afraid to make bold story choices. To me, this last phase feels like they tried to do too much, too fast, and missed more than they hit. Thoughts? Outrage?

Totally agree. I think it's kind of like The Rock. That guy when he is promoting is always "on". He did an interview, sorry can't remember where, where the camera pushes in and they ask him more and more personal/serious questions and he seemed fairly chill and normal in that kind of a setting, Ryan can do the same thing when the topic gets a bit more serious.

Well to be fair to that movie specifically, it's not exactly a "romp". I've rewatched it once, maybe twice? since D&W came out I've considered watching it again.
I have the 4K Noir version of it which is pretty slick looking. I saw it as part of a double feature with Mad Max Fury Road Black and Chrome at a theatre maybe 6 months after Logan was released. Definitely gives it a different vibe and the cinematography and grading actually look good, not just a "get rid of the colour, and there you go".
Also on the topic of black and white versions, The Mist in B&W looks WAAAY better if that's a movie you haven't seen or want to rewatch, it looks super ugly in colour.

Watching Ryan Reynolds in his Wrexham documentary show, he seems more low key in real life, although still quippy. He’s probably a very heightened version of himself in Van Wilder/Deadpool

You have to think even though it's a truck load of money, that is excessive for sure, that RDJ wouldn't come back if there wasn't a compelling story. Why ruin a perfect run that already earned a ton of money. He can go and do the meatier Oppenheimer roles he probably craves doing and likely will get more of thanks to the Oscar win. It sounds to me like they cracked something and he is happy to be a part of it.

I was a bit worried about the Russos coming back because if that's all they got and they didn't get Markus and McFeely I'd be concerened. Well they got 1 of the 2 anyway so that's a positive sign to me even if they did The Gray Man all together and it wasn't very good. Maybe it's a case of, they are just better at adapting superhero stories.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth over this has been absurd. To me the only legitimate complaint is the excessive amounts of money paid out while below the line workers suffer.

It’s not just boring, it’s desperate. And for me, I’m sick of “humanizing the villain” antihero stories. We’ve moved beyond this. Marvel’s refusal and apparent inability to move forward, only wanting to recapture what has been, to make marvel great again…. The creative leadership is bankrupt and have been for years. Not to mention, the Russo’s success was based on better filmmakers and better stories that coalesced into something greater than its parts. They happened to be there for that. They did not CREATE that. And how do I know? Every movie they’ve made since Marvel hasn’t just been bad—it’s been awful, inert, and overconfident. And these are the directors? This is Marvel’s death knell.
