Is The Substance Mubi's first theatrical release? I know I've seen the Mubi logo before other films in theaters, and a quick look at their Wikipedia shows they've been releasing films theatrically since 2016. In any case, I've been subscribed to Mubi for years and I love to see the unique curation on their platform and how they've evolved over the years. Great episode, btw! I love laughing along with you guys. Thanks!

Re: Marxist text This movie more so depicts the perils of communism than anything

Joe Cabello

I'm in the south and I know Devindra is in Atlanta. Hurricane Helene battered that area. Hoping he and his family, friends and their pets are all ok -

The guys claim that MMMBop isn’t still culturally relevant but this is the SECOND time I’ve heard reference to it on a popular podcast this week alone (see Andy Roddick’s podcast Served). It may also be the second time I’ve heard MMMBop mentioned in the last decade, but that’s neither here nor there obviously.

Bobby Simpson

I saw it last night and it was an almost sold out screening and I didn't see anyone walk out. However, the audience was mostly guys who I'm guessing are gore/horror fans who, IMO, clearly did not get the movie, as they were loudly laughing during most of the last act. I feel like this movie is really speaking to women and what society subjects them to, and the movie alternates between being rage inducing and being quite sad, but clearly much of my audience just thought it was silly. I thought it was a mostly great movie that I think went off the rails and undercut its own message just in the last maybe 5-10 minutes, but I do agree that it's destined to be a body horror classic, and it should be the runaway winner for makeup at the Oscars, but we'll see if they actually reward a movie like this.

Stranger2Reality

Completely unhinged. Dave’s lack of awareness of contemporary music makes me feel less envious of his very impressive cinematic knowledge lol

Jon See

Did y'all see the SIGNS 4K Steelbook? They used the teaser poster for the case art and it looks way better than the standard 4K blu case

Alec Rodriguez

Dave whenever he has to agree with one of his cohosts: "I hate to do this" 😂

Mountain of Conflict

His tendency to demand rules in movies is troublesome.

Mountain of Conflict

I agree with y'all but I do want to mention 2021s Maid with Qualley and McDowell as daughter and mother in two great performances.

Linus

I don't understand his issues, "why do the cores make you bigger" Because they just do

Cardassian Vexillology

They are bad, they aren't 100 youtube guys sitting in front of action figures ranting about them for months bad.

Cardassian Vexillology

She is a legacy actor. Nepo baby is when they stink and only have the job because of nepotism.

Cardassian Vexillology

I saw this first and agreed with Jeff completely. It was such an okay watch, but then I watched the Wild Robot and was like oh my god again this is it!!!

Jay Wood

Good take

Tony Disarufino

It was deeply rewarding to hear Devindra go Joker mode in real time after Dave reveals he liked Agatha

Tony Disarufino

I believe this marks the first time something I worked on has been covered on the filmcast! I did the hand animated AI robot shots in WHAT'S NEXT, as well as some other graphics/fx stuff! Fun!

Luke Shea

Agreed - it’s intellectually bereft. Perhaps financial security means Qualley can be more adventurous in her film choices, but you could say that of any actor from a wealthy background. No one has ever hired Qualley because of who her mother is. McDowell herself hasn’t been able to get arrested in Hollywood for 20+ years.

Mark P

The use of “nepo baby” here (in the podcast) lately is so tiresome. I had no idea she was Andie MacDowell’s daughter, are we supposed to assume she has a massive influence in getting her the roles ? lol

Garry L

You guys are on fire in this episode! And I haven’t even gotten to the review.

Nicholas Ewers

100 per cent this will end up in the “movies I didn’t get” section for Jeff. Which is ok! But it seems like a good candidate is all.

Reynaldo K. Cruz

Jeff's issues with Transformers One's rules/world building have been part of the lore for decades. That's just what Transformers is.

Nick Clemente

I’m cracking up over here at Jeff calling this a kids movie about nothing before Devindra calls it a Marxist text. That’s after my wife and I discussed whether the movie is about women’s reproductive rights, Scientology, or the MAGA cultural phenomenon. What I’m saying is, yes, either we’re setting our bar low OR this film has a lot to say!

John Halski

Haha. The guys are on one during the What We've Been Watching section. Wow.

Wayne Edwards

I also just celebrated my 10 year wedding anniversary back in August. I’ve also been a listener for that long! Congrats Jeff!

Danny C

There were 4 people including me in my screening of The Substance, I was the only one that didn’t walk out. I loved it. I think it’ll be a body-horror cult classic.

Nervous_NRG

Agatha and Acolyte are both bad. Marvel and Star Wars are two sides of the same Disney coin now. Lowest common denominator stuff.

Brandon Lee Tenney

I’m with Dave. Mmmbop’s songwriting is actually haunting and meaningful!

Brandon Lee Tenney

I watched the first 2 episodes of Agatha and loved it.

Jerry Mudd

Chen preferring Mmmbop over No Doubt is an insane take

Tyler Sexton

I haven't seen either Speak No Evil, but I'm just questioning what the point of it is in a world with two(!) Funny Games.

Mountain of Conflict

Margaret Qualley’s “full nepo-baby power” is to not have to do a Marvel movie if she doesn’t want to. She’ll be okay financially no matter what she does so she can afford to just make interesting choices. Not saying she never will - and really not trying to take away from the choices she is making or her talent - but she has somewhat less pressure on her to take a franchise role than other more workaday actors.

Brad Arnold

Tight script.
