Dietrich Bonhoeffer deserves better than the bs movie they have made as the stolen his legacy for MAGA conservatism

Ernest Lewis Jr.

I'm totally with you, and the hosts, that this cover sucks. I feel like we have Limp Bizkit to blame for all this nonsense, with how popular their cover of George Michael's Faith was, or maybe Marilyn Manson's cover of Eurythmics Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). After that we got a bunch of these nu metal bands covering great classic songs and making them sound like ass.

Stranger2Reality

Yes but it’s also used generically to mean “secret gathering.” No different from naming a movie Rendezvous or Clandestine or whatever

DarmineDoggyDoor

That board game sounded like an inherently hard thing to explain. It reminded me of anytime someone tries to explain the rules of a board game to me and it goes in one ear and out the other and I’m like let’s just figure it out as we go.

David Esposito

Another fun fact: on Spotify, this cover has 832 MILLION streams and is Disturbed’s most popular song on the platform. Down With The Sickness has 808 Million streams by comparison

Sean Ludwig

What was Devindra's point? Isn't Conclave literally what the process of picking a new pope is called?

Larry Jay

How dare you insult Disturbed like that

Brandt Dudziak

Does anybody else think of Cyberpunk 2077 right after The Matrix even though it's not a movie?

Emmanuel Mompi

Yup, That was shocking. Incredible film and a landmark of independent cinema. Regardless of Devindra's experience with it in high school, the film should be recognized as an important work.

Carl Arne Løchen Arnesen

Chain Reaction is a very boring movie, but it is one of two Keanu/Rachel Weiss movies (Constantine being the other) with a post credits scene that came out long before Marvel popularized the practice. Chain Reaction's post credits scene is so stupidly humourous that it almost makes that dull movie worth watching.

Stranger2Reality

Fun fact about The Matrix. Tarantino listed his favorite films since 1992 (in no particular order). He said #1 is definitely Battle Royale. He added that #2 would definitely be The Matrix only if the sequels had never existed.

InAWorldUnderwater

I just go to Wikipedia if I want to look up the status of a show. Even IMDB does stupid stuff. But on Wiki you see everything relevant.

Mountain of Conflict

The band that did Down With The Sickness did that Sound of Silence cover. Disturbed. They actually did that terrible cover years before it got attached to that terrible movie trailer.

Nicholas Ewers

The first time I heard Disturbed's cover of the song years ago, I was shocked at how well regarded it is to the point that it shows up on some "Top Cover Songs" lists. I still think it's just fine, and a little too hyped up.

Albert VergeldeDios

Yeah, with the orchestral arrangement! But using it in a trailer seems weird. But that's music licensing for ya.

Derek Cheng

Guys, guys: regarding Keanu movies, I was mystified by the silent non-reaction to Jeff’s mention of MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO. Although it was more River Phoenix’s film, Keanu as an object of gay longing gave a beautiful and sensitive performance, in a landmark of queer cinema. It should be on the list!

CDMatthew

When I was 15 Disturbed was my favorite band, so much so I got a tattoo on my arm of their logo... now whenever I hear that Sound Of Silence cover I consider amputation.

James Atkinson

My local theater is having a Keanuthon. They’re showing the black & white version of Johnny Mnemonic with a Q&A with the director. Apparently that movie was lit to be shown in black & white. I’m super excited for it!

Mathew

Re: Jeff's reaction to seeing the Speed poster. I remember seeing some segment on the local news about new movies coming out that weekend, and the anchor said, "When you think of action movies, the name Keanu Reeves probably doesn't come to mind, but that might change after this weekend as his new movie Speed comes out." Which is hilarious in hindsight but also, didn't Point Break come out a few years before?? He had already done a very popular action movie! So idk.

Sarah Rosenberg

I love you guys.

Mathew

I agree with Jeff about Top 2 Keanu Reeves movies: The Matrix and Speed. John Wick would probably be number 3 for me. But Jesus... Is David trolling with bringing up the Point Break remake and then following it up with Chain Reaction as one of Keanu's best movies?! 😆

Jeff Gibson

Wow, I am learning so much today. I completely missed this phenomenon. I agree, the live version was better than the album track, but this still falls more into the novelty covers category for me instead of the better than the original category. Lots of people do not agree with me, though! This has been a theme recently...

David Gauthier

Dude hear me out, I know Jeff doesn't watch trailers... but what about HEARING THEM? That trailer reaction was gold and I would like it to be a weekly thing

Alejandro G

I was hoping you’d make the Chill Factor/Skeet Ulrich connection and you did!

Ted Lauck

Haha that trailer reaction at the end was amazing.

Maxaveli

IMO, original is great and Disturbed’s version is also great. Hearing it for the first time in a religious movie trailer is probably not a great setup for success, though.

Secunda!

You got it. The version they did on Conan is miles better.

Jacob Chimilar

They did a much better version on Conan years ago. It is alsq the most watched video on the entire Conan channel, that's probably why!

Jacob Chimilar

That’s Disturbed’s cover of The Sound of Silence. It has over a billion views on youtube. Just another reminder of the society we live in.

Nervous_NRG

A Real Pain after dark next week!

Recently, at dinner with my wife and kids, the phrase "The Sound of Silence" came up. My wife, who didn't grow up in the US, knew it was a song title but hadn't heard the song. I told her to play it, because I thought she would recognize it. She pulled up Spotify and played the first version that showed up - which was by Disturbed. She liked it. I was amazed Spotify had that as the top version since I had never heard of it, and thought it sounded very cheesy compared to the original. I told her to play the Simon and Garfunkel original version - she was not as in to it, the tone already having been set by the hard rock vibes of Disturbed. Now Disturbed shows up in Spotify mixes for me, a cheesy reminder of my failure to specify which version to play first. Today's Patreon episode helped me solve the mystery I didn't know I cared about - this was not really Spotify's fault, it was the Bonhoeffer movie trailer at fault for making this version more popular. Thanks???

David Gauthier

It is, just looked it up.

Ben Wesorick

I think it's Disturbed xD
