It is! Thank you so much, that was a blast! (also: boi, did Jeff's mic quality improve)

The penguin is my favorite show of the year. The finale was stellar. I cannot believe Dave and Devindra are kinda Luke warm on it. For what it’s worth, it’s one of the few shows I’ve had many friends text me to see if I’ve watched it because they have loved it so much.

I'm very surprised by Dave's review of Juror #2, as I saw it a couple weeks ago and thought it was painfully stupid, even beyond that absurd premise. It was one of those movies where so many characters take actions that made zero sense other than to just push the movie along to specific plot points. The direction was fine, and the acting was fine, but what a laughably bad script. It feels like the kind of movie Ryan George would absolutely eviscerate if he ever does one of his pitch videos for it, by constantly asking why a character would ever do that and the "screenwriter" saying "so that the movie can happen!" I too have been mostly unenthused by Eastwood's output in recent years, and was skeptical of this movie as well, but the reviews were so positive I gave it a chance. Two guys sitting in front of me were talking after the movie about how great they thought it was (although they could not figure out which character was played by Keifer Sutherland, and he wasn't in any kind of weird makeup or costume, so that should tell you something about their judgement), but my friend and I whom I saw it with both looked at each other and agreed it was hilariously stupid. Maybe if you turn your brain off and don't think at all ever about why anyone is doing the things they're doing, then you can enjoy it, but otherwise it's yet another miss from Clint Eastwood, IMO. Eastwood has always been a very inconsistent director though. For every Unforgiven there is a The Rookie showing how his films cover all ends of the spectrum. I'm wondering if Dave's own jury experience recently maybe distracted him enough from all the logical leaps this movie took, and he was more caught up in reminiscing about his own trial he helped adjudicate. That's the only way I can explain him complimenting this script.

Jeff talking about how he never gets on Paramount Plus when he literally watched the Casa Bonita documentary 2 weeks ago.

AF

Oh god and I forgot about the best actor win. Totally agree with Jeff about that too

Reynaldo K. Cruz

The only thing I hate about gladiator is that it won best picture.

Been on a 90s binge recently! Turning 40 this year really gave me a case of the memberberries, started with the Rock, then Con Air, speed next gladiator, these movies definitely suffer with exhaustion in the last 20 minutes but otherwise there great crowd pleasers mostly practical effects

Devindra says that The Penguil is set in the same place as Sopranos. Not true. Most of Sopranos is set in New Jersey with relatively few scenes in New York City. Also, he says the opening of the Sopranos could be changed for Penguin even though Tony is heading into New Jersey from the city. I know that he likes to go on about living in New York (I’m in native lifetime New Yorker) but that is just not a good point. The final thing I’ll mention is substituting New York for Gotham city is not so innovative. They substitute in Chicago for Gotham city in the Nolan films. Just what movies do these days.

I’m hoping it’s an overblown issue that isn’t particularly prevalent! I’ve got some 15 year old blu rays that still work fine (the DVD collection has long since been upgraded so no way to know if those rotted or not!)

Similar to the carved wooden figurines, Maximus fondly describing his home was apparently Crowe improvising and describing his own home in Australia. The behind-the-scenes detail that I wish I did NOT know is: (Pause for people who don’t want to know this) Maximus tells Lucius that the two horses on his breastplate are named Scatto and Argento, loosely translated from Italian as Trigger and Silver - the horses of Roy Rogers and The Lone Ranger. This was a Crowe idea too apparently. It’s a fun detail but a reference to other movies feels too Easter Egg jokey and spoils the “historical” immersion (but I am well aware that this movie is anything but historically accurate).

Cameron Stewart

I had a feeling Jeff’s former take on Gladiator was a result of his age and the person he was at the time coupled with the film’s wild popularity at the time it came out. Jeff, it’s time to revisit The Mummy - not a classic by any means but a really fun action adventure from the late 90s with oodles of charm!

Lahiru

You guys should check out Richard Jewell. That’s a very solid Clint Eastwood film.

By the time Batman 2 is released Bruce Wayne will be the only person who remembers what happened in part 1

“Matt Reeves says Bruce Wayne ‘blames himself’ for the events of the first film and will be ‘finding it very hard to be Batman’ in The Batman Part 2.” -Digital Spy

Brian Deaton

This movie is Spartacus. It's why it's also copying some of the more famous stuff of that movie.

Mountain of Conflict

At my signal, unleash episode 800.

Mountain of Conflict

...btw I think Maximus is a George Washington type, who gives up power after winning the war.

Devindra, I hope you will watch Dune Prophecy, because it doesn't seem to just set up for the films. Yes it explains the backstory of the universe so people understand why society and technology are the way they are during the times of Paul Atreides, but there were references during the first episode that suggest it might explore plot points and characters way past what Denis Villeneuve will adapt. This both scares and excites me, as what Frank Herbert wrote after the first two books are brilliant, but I'm also afraid they will follow the sequels and prequels that Brian Herbert wrote.

Wensi Zhou

I had to google disc rot and now I feel so sad.

Joy o Napping

I think it might be this one??? https://www.slashfilm.com/549732/filmcast-ep-409-kong-skull-island/

I would love if once a month in the After Dark, you guys pick a show one of you have been banging the drum about and begging the others to watch and actually watch it, or like 3 episodes of it and then discuss.

Outlandish Beats

Jeff’s head cannon - Gordon and Ashley being Rad and Trixie from Bluey made me smile! That’s the best.

Lino Rodriguez Jr.

Since we are about to take a stroll down memory lane: Can by any chance somebody tell me in which episode Jeff coined the phrase "money horse"?

Andreas Engelhardt

Looks like it was recently announced Juror #2 is hitting Max on 12/20

Chachzilla

If you find yourself listening to the Filmcast this week with the sun on your face, do not be troubled, for this is not episode 800 and IT HAS YET TO BE RELEASED!

Nervous_NRG

Yeah, watch those old movies. Like CASABLANCA!😅 do it, gents.

Mountain of Conflict

Looking forward to the first ever non-canonical episode!
