Ep. 797 - Venom: The Last Dance

Dave, the reason that the Chinese audience likes Venom is that it is an anti-hero and it's dark sense of humour. To be honest, the mainland Chinese audience don't care for plots of American movies as they are seen as cliched, especially comic book movies that is usually pure good vs pure evil. They get enough of that sort of thing in state sponsored propaganda war films. This is also the reason Star Wars does not do well, yet Transformers does gang busters. There is no nostalgia component attached to Star Wars in China (as the original films was never released there), but everyone who was born after 1980 grew up watching the original Transformers cartoons. It was so popular there that almost every semi trailer seen on the road in mainland China will have an Autobot logo sticker stuck to its bonnet. If you look at the box office in China since 2016, they prefer locally made stories, especially comedies, murder thrillers and love stories. However, they will go out for big budget spectacle from Hollywood that offers something different.

I saw Conclave this week and I was the youngest person in the theater by about 30 years, and I'm in my 40s. I, too, thought this movie was both brilliant and well timed considering the election.

Cindy McIntyre

This makes me realise how few guests the show has on these days, outside of BJ, because we rarely hear that Jeff monologue about why he needs to do a limerick anymore

Mark P

A little fact I think is worth mentioning: Venom was the first film to be limerick’d. For some reason, Dave missed a few episodes in 2018 and decided to catch up by doing his reviews in the form of limericks, the first of which was Venom. And thus, his authoritarian rule was established.

The King in Black (Knull) is a remarkable storyline in the Comics. The one villain who could rival Thanos. In the movie, they actually do a decent job of presenting how Knull is released but does nothing beyond that. I hope Knull is involved with the new cosmic stories in the MCU.

Saw the Venom NYC premiere in 4DX. From my one prior experience, I hate 4DX, but this movie and 4DX were made for each other. I actually enjoyed it. Also, didn’t anyone think the CGI was a massive step up from the prior Venoms?

Bobby Simpson

Somebody actually told him that in an earlier episode and still his brain reverts back to „didn’t like it“😀

In regards to Kingsman, Jeff actually loved The King's Man. Episode 658 46:00 "I loved it, everybody loved it, my mom loved it, I had a great time with it...return to form for the franchise" and more praise.

Ryan Goodwin

This episode was very cathartic after seeing Venom today. Mind-numbingly bad.

Tyler Sexton

Correct me if I missed it, but did anyone ever mention We Live in Time? Surprised it wasn't a review. A highly anticipated film that was pretty good in my opinion with a great cast.

Timothy Mably

Embarrassingly, I just realized that “Prey” is the opposite of “Predator.” Best movie of the franchise.

Regarding Speed 3 and the cell phones. I’m an immigration lawyer in Atlanta and am working on a case where my client called 911 and HID her phone on a high jacked bus. The shooter took up everyone’s phone after the high jacking and none of it was streamed. So — I guess the point is — it could work even with “phones.” My client was rather courageous. She called 911 and hid her phone. Told the high jacker she didn’t have a phone. It was pretty bad ass of her TBH. Look up Atlanta / Gwinnett bus highjacking if you need to verify. :)
