Devindra and David React to the new Superman Trailer

Comments

I can’t say I share the excitement. Somehow it doesn’t look like a real movie, looks like a fake movie trailer someone would watch in a streaming show. Someone said CW and I see it. Meh

DarmineDoggyDoor

I have absolutely loved all the guardians movies, and all of James Gunn’s projects in general, but this “look” is not one I’m liking. I don’t know why no one talking about this looking like the flash, or simply somewhat like a CW show’s color palette. I feel like no one wants to criticize it for fear of sounding like a Snyder fanboy, but I do think there’s a cheaper look we are looking past because we are so excited for it.

Branden Cancino

Absolutely loved this and echo everything Devindra said. I’ve gone from being very mildly interested to actively looking forward to this. What a pleasant surprise, and from DC!

Lahiru

Are you confusing this with the Bryan Singer Superman Returns? There is NOTHING in this trailer that feels like a rehash of the original (even the theme music barely resembles the original), unless your complaint is that it features much of the iconography of Superman.

Lahiru

This does not look or feel anything like the 1978 film.

Lahiru

As an adult I don’t watch kids movies but perhaps you can discuss this from Matt Singer next after dark - https://screencrush.com/best-dad-movies/

Mark P

This is not an origin story, Superman is already an active hero on Earth at the start of the movie, and there are other superheroes, so seems like it will be quite different.

Peter Tribe

Okay, so you feel that the intent here is to stoke nostalgia, by using the classic theme and tone of the 78 movie. You’re not wrong! I think that the messaging here is for sure to signal to the audience that the dark, overly serious Snyder era is well and truly over, with a “back to classic” approach to the character. Your use of TFA as an analogy is where you lost me because the frequent critique of that movie is that it is, essentially, the same movie as ANH, with the same beats and familiar imagery playing out in much the same way. I don’t think that can be said at all of this new Superman, in fact I think this seems pretty unlike any Superman movie that’s come before, from the simple inclusion of Krypto to the other superhero characters and the giant kaiju, and a Luthor that seems truly villainous instead of the real estate conman from the Donner/Singer movies. The tone is a throwback but I don’t think the actual story will be.

Cameron Stewart

Thank you for your question here. I understand where you are coming from and I think I can answer the question. I think the disconnnect here is what I mean by "Force Awakens" it. I don't mean a shot for shot or blow by blow remake. What I mean is this: With Star Wars we had the original trilogy that is beloved, and then the prequel trilogy that most people hate. Then we had a long gap between Episode 3 and 7, and once JJ Abrams came into the fold, he fairly obviously (IMHO) had the intent to remake Episode 4 rather than take Star Wars in a new direction. The key here being "rather than take Star Wars in a new direction." His plan, as roasted by South Park S20E05, was to "Make Star Wars Great Again." That's what I mean by "Force Awakens" it. I'm not referring to how much The Force Awakens film copies Episode 4, but rather the intent and direction. So back to this Superman trailer. Again, with the caveat that we only have this teaser trailer to go off of, there are so many elements of the trailer that scream that Gunn is trying to remake/make a derivative of the '78 Superman film (not beat by beat, mind you, because we all can see that there are characters that were not in the 1978 Superman movie) and that his intention, like JJ Abrams with Star Wars, is to "Make Superman Great Again." This is in the look, aesthetics, colors, and also, yes, the use of the John Williams score. I know you asked me to not mention it, but you cannot leave that out. That's a direct reference to the 1978 Superman film. It's such a strong reference that many people might think this film is a remake of that film or in the same continuity, like Superman Returns was. At least as far as this trailer is concerned, James Gunn is blatantly trying to get people excited for his Superman movie by explicitly invoking the 1978 Superman film. If the trailer had different music, I would still feel that way as to everything else (look, aesthetics, use of color, etc), but not to this degree. As we seem to agree, the theme does a lot of heavy lifting. It beats you over the head with its reference to 1978 Superman. Obviously, we will see how the final film turns out, but what we see today does not give me a good feeling about the final film in the sense that I fear that the final film is going to be too much about the invocation of the 1978 Superman film, rather than its own thing divorced from '78 Superman film, Christopher Reeve's portrayal as Superman, and the John Williams score of that movie.

Papool Chaudhari

I promise you I’m not being flippant any more. But I truly am so curious to understand you now. So, in good faith, I am asking you to explain how you think that this maps onto 1978 Superman, in the way that Force Awakens closely imitates the story structure of A New Hope? *Without* mentioning the Williams theme (which may or may not be in the actual film) or the apparent lighter tone than the Snyder version - both of which yes, harken back to Donner’s movie. But aside from that I truly don’t get how you could say this is a rehash in the way TFA is and I’m curious to know why you think so. ETA: Do you think if it had different music you would still feel that way? Obviously that theme does a lot of heavy lifting.

Cameron Stewart

All good, thanks for the discussion!

Papool Chaudhari

Yeah okay, fair, apologies

Cameron Stewart

The "AI generated trailer" comment is the epitome of flippant. We can disagree without accusations of trolling and accusations of "you must have watched some AI generated trailer."

Papool Chaudhari

I’m not being flippant, I just do not agree with you at all.

Cameron Stewart

I’ll take your word on All-Star Superman—I haven’t heard much about that story, but I trust your take. I’m more of a ‘Marvel Zombie way back,’ so I’m coming at this without seeing a way for this to work. That said, I’m definitely open to being surprised if Krypto ends up adding more to the story. Gunn’s great at handling tricky elements, so I’m hopeful he’ll make it work.

Brad

I don't think you are even trying to understand what I'm saying and now you are resorting to being flippant. I'm not saying its a shot for shot remake. I'm saying it's obviously meant to beat you over the head with member berries (to use a South Park reference) to 1978 Superman film. Adding other characters doesn't make this a completely new and fresh take. That just makes it derivative of the 1978 film.

Papool Chaudhari

I wonder if you just watched some AI generated trailer by mistake because I cannot in any way see what you see.

Cameron Stewart

I'm not trolling. Sharing my reaction and incredible disappointment that JJ Gunn is shamelessly using the John Williams score and trying to bring in other elements of 1978 Superman film. Be original, not just trying to invoke member berries.

Papool Chaudhari

I can only assume you must be trolling. I don’t recall Christopher Reeve onscreen with Green Lantern and Hawkgirl and fighting giant monsters. The only thing it seems to share is the Williams theme (which may not even be in the final movie) and the brighter tone.

Cameron Stewart

We obviously have to see the film, but come on, this looks, feels and sounds (John Williams score) like a shameless rehash of 1978 Superman. We should call him "JJ Gunn." The fact that some other characters are added doesn't mean much. Including John Williams score tells you Gunn wants to hook you in by telling you this is going to be like 1978 Superman.

Papool Chaudhari

I have no idea what you mean by “Force Awakens” in reference to this. TFA was pretty much a beat-for-beat retelling of the 77 Star Wars with new characters - this does not seem like that, with the inclusion of the other superheroes and Krypto and such it’s already unlike any previous Superman movie.

Cameron Stewart

Maybe every Batman film from now until the end of time should use the Danny Elfman theme lol.

Papool Chaudhari

The biggest issue with "Force Awakens" is that it's a shameless rehash of "A New Hope." This looks, feels and sounds like a shameless rehash of 1978 Superman film. I hope I'm wrong but this trailer, especially with its use of John Williams theme, seems to reinforce that.

Papool Chaudhari

What does this mean

Graham

Also - Gunn has said repeatedly that Morrison/Quitely’s All-Star Superman is the big touchstone for this film, and that series quite deftly managed to incorporate the sillier, “juvenile” elements of Silver Age Superman while still being quite affecting and emotionally resonant.

Cameron Stewart

Chills. Gave me so many chills. CANNOT WAIT

Graham

For the 1978 movie, yes. This is a different 2024 movie, unless we're just going to "Force Awakens" this. Not to mention rendition itself isn't good.

Papool Chaudhari

I can’t think of a piece of music more relevant for a Superman movie than the Superman theme

Cameron Stewart

It's funny that we just had our hosts complaining about the Sound of Silence Cover on the Bonhoeffer trailer but not this Top Gun(n) esque guitar riff rendition of the John Williams Superman score here lol

Papool Chaudhari

This trailer seems to confirm that Gunn is going to "Force Awakens" Superman. Surprising that this doesn't bother most people.

Papool Chaudhari

I remember when Devon Aoki took a face full of blood in Sin City and didnt even blink, and I was pretty amazed at that until I found out they digitally altered the shot so her eyes stayed open.

Cameron Stewart

It's gonna be a 3 1/2 hour movie. Also Kryto 15/10 on WeRateDogs.

Derek Cheng

I mean, these movies are based on comic books for kids. I know that there have been many “mature” takes on the material but at the end of the day they are children’s fantasy stories. I have no problem with capturing that spirit.

Cameron Stewart

Seeing Krypto in the new Superman trailer has me a bit worried. It’s hard to imagine a super-dog without things feeling a little too cheesy or juvenile.

Brad

Thanks so much guys for doing this, because this really is going to be a big movie for DC comics. And I think I too, I’m not going to watch any more trailers for this movie because this one showed me what I need to know and I am excited

Jaxon Hampton

The is a perfect teaser, Gunn looks like he’s gonna knock it out the park with this one

Maxaveli

Oh yeah I’m explaining it away as emotional flinching and not “it’s impossible for an actor not to flinch when hit with a can of soda” lol

Johnny Destructo

It’s about the gesture not the pain. Or they haven’t edited it out.

Mountain of Conflict

I loved this trailer. After really not vibing at all with Snyder’s vision for the character this feels like a return to what I love about Superman. Anthony Corrigan is in the trailer at 1:52! I was curious how they would handle that character but from the head and shoulders he looks great!

Cameron Stewart

As a massive lifelong Superman (and DC) fan, I'm very excited. So many things we only ever saw in comics or animated series are being brought to life here. Teaser reveals nothing, and yet as a major fan, it feels like it's telling me so much. Green flags left and right- and meta commentary that will divide people for being too "on the nose" and upsetting a certain fan base. There are only a few very specific reasons why Superman ever bleeds in the comics - Kryptonite, the red sun, Doomsday, Darkseid... and a Superman counterpart/clone.

Timothy Mably

I'm getting the sentimentality of Superman Returns but the intensity of MoS

Nizar B

Loved the trailer, not knowing what was bounding through the snow absolutely sent me!

Nick Daughenbaugh

Edi Gathegi: That’s Mr Terrific. He’s a good guy

Johnny Destructo

I know it’s SO dumb but I think it’s weird that getting hit with a soda can would make Supes blink/flinch. Otherwise loved it!

Johnny Destructo

I thought when I saw the trailer that there seemed to be enough villains for three movies.

Chris Nichols

This is one of the fastest reactions I’ve ever seen. This video has Krypto currency. Like, so current and so quickly. Ha.
