Indy intuiting not to look at the Ark or being spared by the Ark because he is “good and pure” takes a big hit if you start doing the math about his history with Marion. We showed this to our daughter not having seen it in decades and as they started going over the story my wife and I both turned to each other with looks of growing semi-comedic horror. 1981 was a different time.

Hard agree. 👍🏻

Came here to mention this. Hoping they will talk about this next week.

re the Raiders discussion, i’m really glad David had that bible anecdote to draw from. i’m a recovering christian and haven’t read the bible in a minute, but as a kid growing up i recall that only Aaron and his descendants were the ones allowed to do look upon the ark, so it wasn’t shocking to me at all Dr Jones knew this.

Throwing this out there, everyone else see the news about this movie using AI for voices and visuals?! Eeeeek - https://www.redsharknews.com/why-epic-period-drama-movie-the-brutalist-was-shot-on-vistavision?hs_amp=true

I hopped on here to say this!! @filmpodcast: was it established by Dave at some point that Jeff is off the hook for doing a limerick on the After Darks, even when it’s a review of a major film??

CDMatthew

It wasn’t so much that there was no sound for the first download of this podcast. It was that there was 45 minutes of no sound!

Truly shocked that NONE of you saw Emilia Perez (and still haven’t) considering the large awards push it’s been happening. You guys (especially David) always are keen to chase whatever the conversation is talking about. Saddened that Devindra was quick to be vocal about the negative response the film got but wasn’t willing to try it- will make it a hard film for him to watch now that he can search for the negative

Jay Wood

Dave, you need to start cracking that whip and forcing Jeff to do limericks for after dark reviews

First rule of names, you can pronounce them however you want

I’m so glad to hear someone else call out the missing set-up to the climax of Raiders. That is a storytelling issue, even if it doesn’t rise to the level of “problem” for you. Your mileage will vary on that point. I do have a different read on the meaning of the climax than what the guys discussed, though. I don’t think the significance of the scene is “Indiana just knows his stuff.” I read the scene as the culmination of Indy’s character arc. He started the movie a tomb raider. He understood the local lore academically, but he didn’t really understand or revere the meaning of these objects to the people. Beloq, by contrast, had a false or fraudulent reverence. He used the people and their traditions to take advantage of them. By averting his eyes in reverence to the Hebrew G*d, Indy had achieved a genuine respect for these artifacts. And in so doing, he both survived and understood by the end that the Arc wasn’t simply another object to be possessed.

We are so back.

Yesss. So looking forward to listening to this. I saw it last week and am still processing it.
