Patreon-only sneak peek of "Far Beyond the Sun" (Yngwie Malmsteen) - work in progress

Hi Patrons,

This is Matt, I help Patrick here on the channel.

For a while now, Patrick has been working on Yngwie Malmsteen’s tune “Far Beyond the Sun” (1984), a highly requested song. If you’re familiar with Malmsteen, you’ll know this is a very challenging piece to play! I asked Patrick how it compares to other difficult songs like "Cliffs of Dover," and he said it’s definitely the hardest one he’s tackled so far.

So this is no simple task. He's taken it on as a personal challenge. If he can master it, he will post it on YouTube with his tab in the usual way. He thinks he's not yet nailed it.

BUT! I think his progress is already very impressive, and I’ve persuaded him to let me share his practice video with you all.

Please keep in mind that this is a raw practice session and doesn’t have the usual polish of a published video. It's not in costume and the song is played on his gold top Les Paul (!) The tone is not dialled in and it's not recorded into the computer etc. It's just a very simple practice video. Also, the tabs aren’t ready.

But I thought some of you might enjoy an early peek.

Would you like to see more Patron-only “work in progress” videos like this, or should Patrick stick with the policy of only releasing the final product?

Rock on!

Matt

eyes watered a wee tad bit THANK YOU! OMG made the year's end with this song

It sounds like you borrowed or PRS did sponsor the video, so I'm guessing you are in touch with PRS.? I do think if you have a go again it would be cool to see a bird inlayed scalloped fb. It takes some engineering to do that with pearl because the thickness but mortising with a laser then 2-step cold-casting or clamping in wood inlays are ways to solve it. IMO, PRS should def. offer scalloped fb replacement necks if not a sig. model. Nonetheless, congrats on the video. I remember learning Yngwie in the 90's from the tabs that were available and all those 11:19 polyrhythms and such left my head spinning. I played with my half-speed 4 track till I could get something decent (for a 15yo) but never really got on top of it. Your groupings are much more manageable, allow one to practice at slow speeds and seem more like the way Yngwie probably thinks. thanks again.

My thoughts exactly!

And here I am sucking while playing "Flight of the Bumblebee", outstanding effort and can't wait to enjoy the official performance!

Jason Wojcik

hard to believe that you can memorize all of that let alone play it exactly like someone else did! Extraordinary!

Chris Eldridge

I'm just picturing how fast the tab is going to need to move across the screen in the final video heh

Simple Simon

More behind the scenes please. Love it!

I'd love to see more of these practice sessions. I'd even love to see a "how I practice/learn a song" video. Anyone who has learned this many songs at this high of a level has to have a ton of tips.

Rodney Stewart

Love it! Looking forward to the finished video and tabs.

C'est propre pour une session d'essai, un énorme bravo votre travail est incroyable.
