Mega64 Movie Club: Perfect Blue

We're back in the world of anime to check out a beloved classic for the whole family!! Perfect Blue is one of Satoshi Kon's most acclaimed movies from the 90s about a pop star quitting her career and losing herself in the process. What did the bunch of us think about it?

Just revisited this episode, I love hearing y'all's takes. I know Shawn's not the biggest into anime, I'm not sure how many Studio Chizu films any of you all have seen. But I think Shawn might actually like the film called "Mirai" by that studio. It's more of a simpler constructed plot with no intense twists, and the main aspect of the plot is "Family" both current and ancestral. I feel given how much Shawn's life is dedicated to his wife and kids I feel this might be the one anime that would really hit home with him, it's a really touching feel good story which I know he's into as well.

This is one of the better Movie Club episodes. I think it helps when a movie has a confusing or unconventional premise - it fosters more discussion on the mechanics of the plot. Rocco's comment about the perspectives not always being Mima's when our expectations might be that they are is such a great point. Good job guys!

Rocco has never been more right than about anime kids laughing/talking throughout an anime movie, this phenomenon almost ruined DBS: Broly in theaters for me.

I love Ghost in the Shell but I def feel it's the LONGEST 83 minutes I've ever sat down with. Every time I watch it feels like 2 and half hours

All of Kon's stuff is gold, and Perfect Blue might be his best, but ya'll def should try like Tokyo Godfathers or Millenium Actress next time. Muuuuch more straightforward, less wild cerebral

I’ll back up liking johnnies idea that the whole thing WAS a movie, a Charlie Kaufman-esque publicity move my Mimi’s management to transition her from pop star to movie star in the most meta way 👍👍

Interesting note is that the final line in Japanese is delivered by Rumis voice actress instead of Mimas adding another layer of ambiguity. They missed this in the English dub so it just becomes a straightforward happy ending.
