Mega64 Record Club Ep. 4 - Elvis Presley - From Elvis in Memphis (Album #322)

The forth episode of Shawn's Record Club show is here with special guest and Elvis expert Jennie Chatfield! He's jumping to a random album in the "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" book that Rolling Stone put together. Today he's landed on #322 Elvis Presley - From Elvis in Memphis

I’m a big Elvis fan, but he’s definitely better with specific songs rather than whole albums, which is a shame because there are some deep cuts that I adore nobody’s heard of (If I Can Dream, We Can Make the Morning, Trouble, My Boy, Clambake). This albums decent but not too memorable, there are others I can think of that should be on the list instead, namely the NBC Comeback soundtrack that was right before this.

The song After the Gold Rush might sound kinda meh if you listen to it in a vacuum without any context but it was never supposed to be a hit single - one should ideally listen to the whole album from beginning to end or at the very least listen to tracks 1, 2 and 3 so you can see how it flows naturally between tracks 1 and 3. I consider the album Neil Young's best album if not second best so I highly recommend giving the whole album a serious shot because it is really exceptional.

Having Jennie on this one was awesome, but I could barely hear her throughout the entire episode.

Isaiah

I liked the opener but yeah, it was homework.

I'm also going through the RS500 list and one piece of advice I have is to check what the original track listing was when released. A lot of versions on Apple Music are re-releases that have added songs like you found out here. Not only did it almost change your Pieces of Vinyl score, but it will save a hell of lot of time when encountering those big deluxe versions on Apple Music.

Jennie rules. Bring her back please

That was a fun episode! You two have such an entertaining dynamic haha. It's always nice when someone has a deep personal attachment to an artist, so it was joy to listen to Jennie's insights and connection with Elvis and likewise to Shawn doing the research and pulling out Elvis factoids. And also the fun way Jennie messes with Shawn on top of all that made this a delightful listen. Hope you can have her on again when the other Elvis album pops up on the random number! Looked like it's also in the 300s, so at this rate, probably not too long from now.

Saddened to learn Shawn hasn't done the dishes ever in his life

I liked this album a lot more than I thought i was going to and it was also my first Elvis record. 3/5, favorite songs were “I’ll hold you in my heart,” “any day now,” and “suspicious minds”

Pearstrike

I think Shawn has a crush on this week's guest.

Thomas Hasse
