Truth be told, I might end up making a video about this book, at some point, but for now, I'll write about it. For those not in the know, Angela Nissel was responsible for joining Aaron McGruder for the writing of Season 4 of The Boondocks. But before, they'd known each other for longer.
I don't know the specifics of how they met, but Aaron and Angela were good friends. So much so, that Aaron actually drew for her book. That book being, The Broke Diaries. I recently talked to Angela abit about this on Twitter and I'm currently reading the book, and it's true. This came out around 2001, so this was also around the time where Aaron was still actively drawing. The illustrations are cute, and the stories are fun.
I'm about 50 pages into it, and it really dawned on me that The Broke Diaries is actually a precursor to Boondocks Season 4. It's basically about Angela's life as a broke college student, and Aaron and Angela were supposed to write a screenplay for it. And since I'm guessing that wasn't picked up, Aaron brought Angela along for Season 4 and they conspired to make Season 4 essentially a Boondocks-style Broke Diaries.
Whether or not it worked, that's up to you.
But, I think the book is really solid and I recommend people pick it up. Angela is genuinely a really talented and engaging writer. And, I don't think Season 4 is representative of the quality of work she can produce. Especially since she wasn't the only hand involved..
But that's a story for another day.
Shout to Angela Nissel. Show her love and support.
