Aight, remember when This is America was the craze? When everyone looked at it and went "wow what a deep message."
I don't know man, I always found the song average and the music video's message to be very self-explanatory. It was very overt, and that's what I'm not a big fan of. Happens with a lot of black media. Dear White People, Get Out, what-have-you. It's so in-your-face that I kind of roll my eyes to it.
I think there's a level of grace and subtlety that needs to be had when creating works like this. Otherwise, it comes off like you just so happened to find out systematic racism and oppression was a thing, and you got excited and decided to make a thing. That's my whole beef.
I think it's harder for white liberals to detect, but among black folk, we look at a lot of these music videos and shows and films and go: "Yeah, but we been knowing this."
This is a short week, but take away this.
It's never about what you say. It's about how you say it. Your message probably isn't anything new. Focus on the most effective way to communicate that message.
