Mega64 Record Club Ep. 44 - David Bowie -The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust... (#40)

and the Spiders From Mars.. Jeez! That's the first time I didn't have room for the whole album title, which is fitting because Garrett and I went extra long talking about this album and about David Bowie. Come join us and let's try to save the world.

Two songs worth listening to after Ziggy would be bowie's version of "All the Young Dudes" and "Velvet Goldmine." Both were conceived for the album but pushed off (Bowie recorded Goldmine the same day as Ziggy Stardust and ended up giving ATYD to Mott the Hoople before recording his own version), which I think was a huge mistake since those songs are just as good as some of the heavy hitters on this album and ATYD ties directly into the ziggy storyline.

Awesome episode and album! Loved hearing Garrett talk about how influential this album was to him and I'm glad Shawn really loved it and got to enjoy it over the break 🙂 Lots of great discussion in this episode! That bootleg record is dope! Though this isn't my favorite Bowie album, that's probably Scary Monsters or Station to Station for me. But I do love and respect it a lot. Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City are easily some of my favorite songs by him. That Nirvana Nevermind pull was nuts! Lol Can't wait to hear you and Garrett talk about that next week!

a true classic

Discogs and eBay try to take down a lot of bootlegs for sale. Check popsike.com for what they're worth. Looks like that live record is worth around $50+.

This has to be the best episode of record club so far lmao. The fact that the album was so good AND Garrett picking Nevermind is insane. Happy to have another easy week for record club listening. Oh and 5/5 for ziggy and watchtower obviously

HELL YEAH!! Super excited for next week!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

As much as I love rock and glam and punk and stuff, it’d be nice to shake things up more - I’m not surprised RS is lacking in the hip hop department tbh ETA: Soul, RnB, folk, any of those would be fine too

Mary and Steve

The hip-hop selection on the Rolling Stones list is lackluster to say the least, but I really want to see Shawn talk about Outkast

Thiago

YES!

This makes me look forward to Thursdays. Love David Bowie!

Getting a little worried that Garrett getting to talk about Sex Pistols, Ziggy Stardust and Nevermind this soon together is a sign from God that his time on Earth is almost up.

Oh also, if y’all liked Ziggy Stardust and haven’t checked out Jobriath I give him a big recommendation. His story doesn’t end well but wow his self-titled album has some bangers. Morning Starship and Take Me I’m Yours are the first two I’d say to check out! Similarly, Klaus Nomi was incredible and a little more out-there but did some cool new wave stuff! He also performed with Bowie on SNL so he’s got the cred there.

Peter Schilling did that Major Tom (Coming Home) song - Plastic Bertrand (Ca Plane Pour Moi) did a cover too! Later Bowie songs Ashes to Ashes and Hallow Spaceboy also continue the Major Tom story - there might be yet another track somewhere in his work, too. Like many cis white women, David Bowie fascinated me as a teenager but his discography is so daunting I’ve only listened to bits and pieces. Suffragette City and Starman are my favorites from this album but there’s not a stinker in the bunch. Re: Covers - up until like, the mid-70s a lot of popular performers weren’t writers so that’s why everyone did a Burt Bacharach song, a Beatles song and lots of show-tunes on every record they recorded. That allowed acts to release an album every year, too. If the songs were there to re-interpret, they could be churning out more hits at a faster pace. At least, that’s my interpretation. Feel free to fact-check me! Always like to see Garrett on here so I’m looking forward to next week! It’s been a real string of hits but I’d also like to see another rap or hip-hop album soon. We’ll see!

anyways you guys should watch VELVET GOLDMINE for the movie club!

Thiago

extremely formative album for me (and sts/low later on) during my teenage years. I don't play much Bowie these days but I'm afraid if I hear "ziggy played guitar" I'll just start crying

Thiago

I'm not as good at picking and choosing songs to listen to versus listening to an album from start to finish and I feel like this particular album's greatness shines in how well it works as one singular story. With that being said, I could listen to Five Years on it's own any day. The first two verses in particular are some of the most mind-blowing shit I've ever heard. (only amplified as the opening of an album) David Bowie's discography is like Legend of Zelda in that virtually any combination of entries could make up your top 5 in any order, everyone has *their* favourite. This was never my favourite. Probably not even top 5. Which is saying a lot. He tha fucking GOATtttt fr. 💿💿💿💿.𝟓/𝟓
