Mega64 Record Club Ep 54 - The Who - Live at Leeds (#327)

Have you ever wondered what The Who was doing on Valentines Day in 1970? Turns out they were recording a live concert at the University of Leeds Refectory. 6 songs were originally used for this album. Let's find out why the used only 6 and WHO ;) made that decision.

I like classic rock, yknow like Zeppelin, Pink Floyd Sabbath, Rush. The who, though? The who feel like the definition of old boomer music. They're fiiiine. Just really tame, kinda boring.

The Who is one of my favorite bands! I'm going through the RS 500 list myself and have ranked 407 of them. Tommy is currently my #1. For reference, I'm in my early 30s.

Yikes, this was a tough one. Especially saying The Rolling Stones, one of the most significant bands of the past 100 years only had “a couple good songs” is a wild statement. Y’all in the comments and Shawn are perfect examples of millennials that grew up with early 2000s pop-rock/pop-punk and think old music with guitar solos and music that’s instrumental heavy is super lame. This album is one of the finest examples of a ‘pure’ rock and roll show. No frills, no pop, just raw rock and roll. That’s what The Who did best, they were very British and goofy sounding at times but their attitude, antics, and cheeky humor is responsible for creating an entire generation of music (punk/garage rock). The style of Pete alone, he was the first to wear Doc Martens and anti-fashion clothing such as the boiler suit, which inspired and entire fashion movement in late 70s England. Maybe if you were told Jack White took everything from guys like these y’all would actually start appreciating the classics more

For millennials, these kinds of figurehead rock bands aged into graphic t-shirt logos at Target. And props to Shawn for bringing up something I bitched about a few episodes ago, with respect to deluxe editions and different versions on streaming services; it's a cash grab to get extra streams on throwaway cuts and demos.

The Who was another band I grew up always hearing about in LA but never was interested. Still not my cup of tea and still not interested in listening to their albums

The who fucking rock. Also, once you hear the Real Love remix with Notorious BIG, you can’t go back to the original

This was really a drag on first-listen because, like, I have no real context for The Who aside from what I’ve seen in cartoons and Pinball Wizard. (The 6 track version is the way to go. Then after taking that in, a few listens to the extended edition. I tapped out when it came to the 4 hour 4 disc re-release!) Like Aretha’s live album a while back, this was interesting from a production and background standpoint. I like the effort that went into the bootleg-styling! Pretty clever stuff, there. Also, it is totally crazy that they just destroyed the tapes from the NA tour. I’m a little surprised I haven’t heard more about that in the Lost Media community. But also… not because it’s not a lost SpongeBob clip lol ANYWAY, next week - have Johnny back on for Bob Dylan?

I’m really sorry Shawn but Real Love > Family Affair. Also fuck live albums being on this list 2/5

I agree with the Rolling Stones/The Who sentiment and I would add AC/DC and Led Zeppelin in there too. Respect. Few good tracks. Don't really give a fuck. 💿💿/𝟓 I guess? Maybe 1.5 or 1.75 idk.
