Mega64 Movie Club: Signs (Anime Expo Special Episode)

Our schedule may be a little nutty over the coming days as we get sandwiched between Anime Expo, our live tour, AND San Diego Comic Con... but we're gonna get creative and bring all this extra video goodness to you from wherever the road takes us!

From our AX booth, we present to you our conversation on the M Night Shayamalan film SIGNS... some people love it, but a lot of people felt burned by it back in its first release. Was the hate warranted, or did we have fun with it over 20 years later?

(Also it was a long AX weekend so we were losing our minds- please bear with us as we try to make ANY sense. Also we got new microphones that might sound a little weird, like panning audio and stuff... we'll get it fixed for next time!)

Next week's episode is BLAZING SADDLES.

Also this movie fucked me up bad when i first saw it when i was like 10. That birthday party scene is permanently burned into the brain.

I'm a plot head. I like the conversation, but sometimes, like in this case, I havent seen the movie in 10 years and its nice to hear a recap.

Slow day?

Heathcliff

The plot recap is nice because it reminds you guys of things to talk about during the episode.

These videos for me are before sleep, so plot is appreciated

I prefer a more casual experience where the general thoughts of the movie are shared while sharing enough of the plot to us.

Randall Robertson

I like hearing the plot! Also that ending was amazing

Cody

either, depends on the movie. If it's something obscure or like a Citizen Kane old movie then give me general plot.

Plothead/Plotnut here, I don't watch the movies in Movie Club so I appreciate a summary of what happens in the movie.

I watched this movie when I was way too young and it has lingered with me for a long time. That scene of Mel Gibson walking through the corn field as and alien slowly makes it's way around him scared the shit out of me.

TheGamingHermit

For the longest time I thought of The Sixth Sense as his best film, but after rewatching Signs as an adult, it's become my favorite of his. It's his most consistently great film, the performances, all the little clues, the ominous, impending threat looming over. . .it's all so good. It preyed on a fear I had as a kid--we had to deal with the threat of tornadoes a lot. And while the alien scenes are all pretty scary, it's the slow, first person walk over to the closet under the stairs, revealing the emergency broadcast signal has taken over for news coverage. And Mel Gibson simply saying, "It's happening," is so perfect. Also agreed about the water bit! People seem to think the aliens are there to colonize Earth, but I feel like they missed the part where the aliens were there to harvest humans--to abduct them, and we have no idea why. Anyway, love hearing more about this film! Regarding plot recap, it's not something I enjoy. Maybe a little bit of background on the film at the start, with y'all explaining your own relationships to the film is nice, but overall I prefer to hear you all discuss your opinions and ideas.

I enjoy the plot synopsis in the episodes. Derrick giving a run through, and allowing discussion on exciting or interesting moments are some of my favourite moments of movie club

Enjoyed the off-kilter vibe of this episode! Huge fan of M. Night as well and Signs is a rather solid film in my books. I have to say I never liked how much time is spent on going through plot points of a film. I feel that it eats up time from more meaty discussion topics such as themes, subtext, film techniques, or just other free form stuff like personal anecdotes regarding the film or amusing behind the scenes stories.

Paul Helstein-Weinblatt

Love the unhinged energy in the beginning here. I never minded the plot rundowns, and I think that helps people that maybe want to watch you guys without actually watching the movie first. But, I personally think a looser conversation like this one is probably the way to go overall. It might be more fun on your end as well.

Castle GSkull

awesome, dont mind the plot play by play
