Mega64 Record Club Ep. 23 - The Beatles - Abbey Road (#5)

Today on Record Club I have special guest and Beatles expert Dick Botte on. We talk about what happened when Abby Road first came out and the change/impact it had on future music. Also, which Beatle did Dick meet when he was 16?! Gotta watch to find out.

I subscribed to the patreon because I heard Dick Botte was going to be on this episode and I wanted to see it. lol

Hearing Dick talk about how he was the first of his friends to hear Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road is like hearing Rocco constantly brag that he was one of the first people to get the internet. Apple doesn’t fall far.

Please please please have Dick on again as a reoccurring guest, I'd love to hear him discuss another band beside the Beatles with you Shawn. I really enjoyed your discussion together, you both have a great rapport with each other that was very enjoyable to listen to!

Amazing, always love seeing Rocco's dad in any video. You can see where Rocco gets it from, even to the point of ribbing Shawn. Didn't Dick wear a Mega64 shirt to that Beatles Vegas show in case they get to meet Paul or Ringo and get some exposure?

Dick is a stellar guest - I love his story about the radio station leaking the album early. That’s huge! It’d be fun to hear the home-taped and remastered official release side by side. I love the Jimmy Osmond encounters, that is so funny!! If you want to hear something unexpected from them, their Crazy Horses album rules. And that David Cassidy album with the Darlin’ cover is one of my favorites - super tickled to see a reference ‘in the wild.’ Excellent Flo and Eddie harmonies all over the album. I didn’t grow up in a Beatles household and haven’t listened to much - my biggest exposure is various covers running the gamut from shitty to weird to good. That said, this was an enjoyable listen overall but some songs really were a slog. Not gonna lie, I would love to never hear Here Comes the Sun ever again. I Want You sucks!!! You Never Give Me Your Money, Octopus’s Garden and Something were the best tracks. I kept listening to them over and over. They also all work really well as instrumentals - if anyone here hasn’t heard Booker T. and the MG’s McLemore Avenue, absolutely give it a listen. It’s not a one-to-one cover of Abbey Road but has about half of them plus some IDK, Sgt Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour tracks as well. When I don’t know what to listen to, I turn that on. The medley is pretty revolutionary, without it we wouldn’t have They Might Be Giants’ “Fingertips,” and Nanobots medley, I’m sure.

I remembered Dave Grohl's book and his multiple stories with Paul McCartney (maybe Dick can look at some of those too). Anyway, having a dad that's also a big Beatles fan I was looking forward to this and it was great. Keep em coming Shawn!

THIS IS HYPE!! a full feature length movie worth! so excited to watch

You can definitely see where Rocco got his gift of gab. Dick is the man. I could’ve listened to him for hours.

So excited to see we got Dick Botte on for this, I'd been hoping for it since it was mentioned as a possibility when record club was first being thought out

Fromaginator

This was amazing. Literally amazing. I knew you were hyped to get Dick on. And I am so grateful. He's always been amazing but his enthusiasm is addicting. And y'all vibe so well this was basically a perfect podcast.

Finally showing Dick.

This was 2 and a half hours shorter than I expected but it was still great. Really glad this got picked because I like this one a lot more now than I previously did. 4/5 for me. Happy to be back home in the 320s

“I am the OG, let’s get that shit straight” lmao yeah that’s 100% rocco’s dad

“My friend’s DAD talks about THE BEATLES!” But seriously, good stuff.

This was great, especially just having some inter-generational thoughts on stuff like this (particularly the mix of The Beatles and Nirvana, and I think similarly about the ep with Emma being cool for this). Looking forward to more like this in the future, it's always nice when you've got a guest.

John Elizabeth Stintzi

really excited for this one! assuming it isn't a reference to a conversation in the episode, the album name is misspelled

Record Club was built on the promise of an eventual Dick Botte episode and after 5 months, we've arrived! 😍 Not my favourite Beatles album, maybe not even top 5 but it's what got me into them so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Outside of Come Together, Something and Here Comes the Sun (my 1st Beatles song) I really don't care for the first half of Abbey Road but from the beginning till the end of the Medley; pure fucking gold. 💙 💿💿💿💿/𝟓 and when I was a stupid ass ignorant dumb kid my dream was to get super famous and die at 27 like Kurt Cobain. I'm sure a lot of idiot emo-boys have that same goal, I still cringe a bit at myself though...

Almost 90 minutes of Beatle talk with Dick Botte? What a treat.
