Mega64 Record Club Ep. 24 - The Clash - Sandinista! (#323)

Y'all ever heard of The Clash? Well, Shawn listened their 4th studio album Sandinista! Everyone of the 36 songs of this triple album... all two and a half hours of it. What did he think? Gotta watch to find out!

New patreon subscriber here Catching up through record club. I did listen to all of it, but around Lose This Skin, track 26, I definitely tuned out and it was fully background music, there’s a fair amount on here I think is fine, if it was one album it’d be pretty decent. But just because something is different and aspirational doesn’t make it one of the Top 500. For what it’s worth, I’m not a big fan of the Clash either, but London Calling is nothing like this, though if you’ve already heard the songs London Calling and Train in Vain, nothing else is really gonna sell you. Fave tracks on here were Hitsville Uk, Junco Partner, Somebody Got Murdered, and Police on my Back.

I love this album. Took years to learn how to love it. It does suck but simultaneously it's also a masterpiece(figure that out). If it's not for you it's very hateable. Only weed makes sense of this album and it's production. I will say a lot of it is stoner nonsense but makes sense if you've gotten attuned to that there. Their other albums are really not like this(except the reggae stuff to an extent).

This album was simply abysmal, and I've liked what I've heard from The Clash otherwise. It is a meandering slog that doesn't work outside of its cultural context and/or whatever beef they had 45 years ago.

I skipped this. Got about 50 minutes in and just couldn't do it anymore. I'm with you, Shawn. This album was awful

I finished. Three times!

I'm 15 songs in and... I mean it's fine? I wish I had listened to their other work prior to this. Something about a British band doing dub seems weird to me. I did like one more time, though. I do like magnificent seven, somebody got murdered. It just seems like for every good song, there are like one or two that are meh. This really should have been cut down. I mean, these guys made a triple album and couldn't even go platinum. Every record sold counts as three!

I thought the Roxy Music review was hard to get through but this ended up being much harder for me. No offense at all Shawn. I completely get why you didn't like it and I'm sorry it ended up being so grueling for you. Mary summed it up pretty well. It's not the place to get introduced to The Clash and context provides a lot with this album especially. I think Sandinista is great musically and extremely influential to a wide variety of artists in multiple ways. That being said, it's not their best and not for everyone. I'm at least glad you liked Somebody Got Murdered, that's one of my favorites as well along with Magnificent Seven, Up in Heaven (Not Only Here) and Police on My Back.

DoflamingoSnailPhone

Try London Calling, it's much more accessible. Listen to Career Opportunities original version off the self titled album, it's a normal version. Magnificent Seven isn't great, imo.

A good truncated version would be: Magnificent Seven Bankrobber (non-album single) Junco Partner Ivan Meets G.I. Joe Somebody Got Murdered Lightning Strikes (not Once but Twice) - could sub this with Up in Heaven (Not Only Here) The Sound of Sinners - could be subbed with either The Leader or Midnight Log Police on My Back Washington Bullets Lose This Skin Charlie Don’t Surf Any one or two of the dub tracks (Sequencing not final)

I love the Clash but this is such an unfortunate introduction to them, especially if you’re not familiar with their output or ethos or anything. You grow up hearing how they called themselves ‘the only band that matters’ and then you hear Joe Strummer and Mick Jone’s weird slurring and wailing and think ‘is this it?’ Sandinista! is definitely the band fucking with their label lol. Mick Jones refers to it as ‘music for oil drillers who can’t get to the record store a lot.’ That said! If you pare this down to an hour of music it can be pretty good! I’m not a big fan of the dub stuff but the disco and rockabilly does more for me. One thing I love about The Clash is that they were not afraid to do something different every few songs. I was so confused when I heard this version of Career Opportunities - they originally released a ‘regular punk’ version on their first or second album and I had an extreme sense of deja vu. Sandinista!’s was performed by the Clash’s then-keyboardist’s sons? I think he played with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, too. Did anyone else catch Tim Curry in Sound of Sinners? I was pleasantly surprised by that! And Hitsville UK featured Ellen Foley, later better known for singing with Meat Loaf and appearing on Night Court. There’s a lot of guest performers on Sandinista! but those are the two that really stand out. And Tymon Dogg, of course. He comes back for Combat Rock, too. PS: yeah, I finished

I finished the whole thing and didn’t hate it because I generally like the clash but I totally get why this album scarred you, Shawn lol. Definitely gave me some Jerry Lee Lewis ptsd with that runtime. There definitely are some bangers though imo like Ivan vs gi Joe and the magnificent seven. Even though I kinda liked this one, I cannot for the life of me understand why it was included in this list. They already have the two good clash records on here, why bother with the d tier one? Instead, you could put a unique album from an artists who didn’t make the list at all. I really don’t understand the thought process of this list but whatever. 3/5 for me.

I tried to listen to this album before listening to this, because London Calling is probably in or near my top ten albums ever, but yeah...after a few songs (and also noticing that it was 2.5hrs??) I decided to stop and just listen to the review. I hope if you do end up with London Calling you're able to give it it's due (& thank God the label didn't let them do a double on that one). I stopped at around song 6 lol

I envision this album being in Garrett's top 25 of all time. The dub, reggae, punk, rockabilly and overall kookiness. Honestly, I thought we were being trolled with this one; but I can't find any evidence that they made this album as a joke. This is ONE YEAR after London Calling lmfao. (Kurt Cobain apparently got worked by this album so hard he almost swore off the Punk genre... holy fucking baited) I was very shocked and very amused for the entire duration. Junco Partner is my favourite. The other included version is good too lol. Police On My Back and Somebody Got Murdered were totally rad. 💿💿💿.𝟐𝟓/𝟓
