Mega64 Record Club Ep. 26 - Weezer - Weezer (The Blue Album) (#294)

My name is Jonas...jk it's Shawn. This week on Record Club I am joined by special guest Rocco Botte as we talk about Weezer's Blue Album! We discuss what led us to discover this album back in high school and the impact it had on both of our lives. Check it out!

Mega64 Record Club Ep. 26 - Weezer - Weezer (The Blue Album) (#294)

Comments

Pinkerton, Blue, and Hurley are the only ones I need (perfect situation and island in the sun are honorable mention those songs are fun)

My first exposure to Weezer was indeed the Blue Album. In fact, the Blue Album (and Clarity by Jimmy Eat World) is one of my earliest memories of music. I have two brothers that are about 10 years older than me, so even as a young kid in the 90's I was exposed to up and coming bands like that. Shawn's story about his daughter made me laugh because I also solidly didn't understand the meaning of the lyrics. Also, I fully thought my brother wrote Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World for a solid while because I heard him playing and singing it on guitar before I'd ever heard the real song.

This is like the second album I was familiar with before it was featured and I love it! Shawn mentioned Beatles Rock Band on Abbey Road; I still have the muscle memory for Say it Ain't So in Rock Band. It put me on a Weezer kick again, and I Pork and Beans and In the Garage are different versions of the same song.

Only two 5/5 Pieces of Vinyl so far, and both episodes have Botte guests!

From these comments it seems Weezer is either hit or very much miss. Hit for me - quintessential teenager music that came to me at the right time. Though they've been out of my rotation for a while, their initial run of albums will remain personal classics. One time my dad borrowed my car. Blue Album was in it. He was very much an oldies guy. All he said when he got back was, "I really liked that song about hanging out in the garage."

I had never listened to this whole album before. I knew the big hits, and I played Guitar Hero. I really like this album. Even though it's supposed to have some emo vibes, I find the whole thing really fun. In the Garage is one of my favourites for sure. The only real dud is No One Else. I get that the song is a satire, but it's still just a weird vibe. I'd give it 4-4.5. Oh, and Sweet Jane is ok.

Blue Album and Pinkerton are the quintessential college albums for me, they’re a little cringy to go back to now but they sum up the headspace I was in very well

My first exposure to Weezer was “Beverly Hills” and I thought it was one of the crummiest, stupidest songs I ever heard. The lazy, dopey, sarcastic vocal delivery on the chorus was such a turn-off. As far as I know, that song remains their only Billboard hit… which is super strange. Then I played “My Name is Jonas” on one of the later Guitar Hero games and hated it lol When my now-husband and I started dating, he urged me to listen to Pinkerton because he was a big fan of that one and Blue Album but figured I’d like Pinkerton more. I think Blue Album would be an excellent EP if it was just the run of “Buddy Holly” through “In the Garage,” the other songs I can do without. “Surf Wax America” was my favorite track. I’ll be honest, I don’t hear what makes Blue Album so remarkable - it’s doesn’t sound cutting edge for the time or like a paradigm shift. I thought the demos were interesting because I got some real Pixies vibes but I think Ric Ocasek’s production maybe shined it up too much. I listened to the Velvet Underground track a lot! It really hit the spot. I haven’t listened to much Velvet Underground or Lou Reed but I like his voice a lot.

Just FYI Rocco, I was at the Death Cab/Postal Service show in DC last night and they did Transatlanticism first so make sure to have the Steam Deck ready to go

Weezer is like the Big Bang Theory of music ("She's in the air; in between molecules; Of oxygen and carbon dioxide" ugh), they were never ever good, sorry guys. But I admit weeping to some songs when I was a teenager feeling out of place and lonely. Pavement, on the other hand, still has its merits.

You guys were actually the first ones to put me onto this record and Pinkerton by talking about them on a podcast a while ago. Ever since then, they’ve both been two of my favorite records ever since. I think I still have to put Pinkerton as my favorite but Blue is the best to just put on and vibe. An easy 5/5 for me. Only In Dreams is probably my favorite track but they’re literally all good. Also I’m with you guys, that velvet underground song did absolutely nothing for me lmao

Before I had any clue what music was I knew there existed a "Sweater Song" My mother has tragically bad taste in music but she bought this when she was a teenager so, I guess she was once on the right path. Love Blue. Pinkerton is like three times as good, in my opinion. Then they fell off a steep cliff. 💿💿💿💿/𝟓 Side note; 8-10 tracks, 38-45 minutes is perfect album length I've decided, especially to make a lasting impact in that allotted time is incredibly impressive.
