Mega64 Record Club Ep. 28 - The Smiths - The Queen is Dead (#113)

Hey everyone, for this episode Garrett agreed to be on with me but ONLY if i met him at the cemetery gates... Which I thought was weird until I listened to the album. Check out this very moody Record Club

Arpeggios... from hell.

Love the show, just catching up from the past couple weeks. This album is good but I'd rather not know anything about Morrissey while listening to it.

Thanks for clearing that up for me! -Shawn

I like Meat is Murder a lot more tbh but this was pretty good. 3.5/5 for me. Morrissey is such a little freak

Olivia Rodrigo's new album on repeat.

I stumbled upon a band called Hot Snakes and their album Audit in Progress. George Clanton's new album and some of his older ones. Scaring the Hoes. Blue Lakes by the Sun Arcs. Some LCD Soundsystem as well.

Oh, I meant to ask! What else is everyone listening to lately? I started going through Raspberries discography after wrapping up Suzi Quatro’s. So far Raspberries is good stuff! Beatles inspired but less daunting because there’s only a handful of albums.

Morrissey is so awful I really didn’t want to like this album but I gotta admit his smooth Kermit-the-Frog-like crooning is pleasing to the ear. Marr’s jangly guitar is right up my alley, too. Sidenote: If I remember right, Morrissey abstained from sex for decades and at one point said something to the effect of ‘there’s a powder keg between my legs waiting to blow’ which is a very gross-funny way of wording you’re horny. Overall I preferred Side B because I’m a sucker for up-tempo tracks. I also learned that There is a Light That Never Goes Out took that great opening riff from a Rolling Stones cover of Marvin Gaye’s song Hitch Hike (or The Velvet Underground’s There She Goes Again - so I guess I still can’t get away from Lou Reed)

Great episode also! Fantastic album and it's always great to have Garrett on. You guys rock!

Okay, I just want to finally get rid of the Shoegaze misconception within the Mega64 universe. Shoegaze music is not related to Emo music and it's no called shoegaze because they are sad and looking at their shoes. The whole point of Shoegaze music is that it's alternative rock with guitar focused music that utilizes a lot of guitar effects. The name came from bands looking down at their multiple effects pedals that they would constantly be using and changing throughout their songs. To which audiences watching these bands do this created the term, Shoegaze. It started in the late 80's early 90's as bands in alt rock wanted to create more dense and expansive sounds within their music. There's some amazing bands that are totally worth looking into if this interests anyone. My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, etc.

The Smiths are one of my favourite bands 🖤 I prefer their self-titled album but I absolutely adore this one too. Cemetery Gates and There is a Light are some of the best songs I've ever heard by anyone. 💿💿💿💿.𝟓/𝟓
