Mega64 Record Club Ep. 34 - Miranda Lambert - Weight of These Wings (#480)

Welp, we are getting back into country this week with Miranda Lambert's album Weight of These Wings. Will Shawn be pleasantly surprised like he was the last time we got a country album? Or, will this be a rough week...only time will tell

This album is now what will play in my head whenever I think of "country music from the 2010s." Hard pass for me, too, but I can also see how being in the middle of preparing for a tour could make this album tedious!

I feel like you should take the current top albums from RateYourMusic or a similar site and pull from that list. You'd probably get a lot more enjoyable stuff.

How fun! What do you have at the top so far? Anything that really surprised you?

I started listening to these Rolling Stone 500 albums when the list was published in 2020, starting at #500 and making my way through the list. I’ve ranked 346 albums so far and this Miranda Lambert album is second to last at the moment. It does get better! Also, this is a weird coincidence - I just wrapped up my listens of Amazing Grace by Aretha Franklin.

I actually really liked this one lol. The experience you had with the Kasey Musgraves album is what I had with this one. I was afraid that I was just a country hater but this one really connected with me. Her voice and lyrics were really personal and intimate. I also like the stripped down guitars and instrumentation. Personally though this was a very raw album but I definitely get why you were annoyed with it haha. 3.5/5 for me.

I mentioned last week that Miranda Lambert has a song that I always mishear as ‘I ate your baby/I told you I was crazy’ and it’s very raucous and reckless but The Weight of These Wings was largely downtempo down-tempo in comparison and kind of boring. I suppose I’m just not big on break-up albums. I’ve had Pink Sunglasses stuck in my head all week because it’s such an earworm (not necessarily in a good way - an infectious disease way). Highway Vagabond was my favorite. To me, this was a lot like The Clash’s Sandinista! where there were a few batches of 3 or 4 songs that were all the “same” - Pink Sunglasses, For the Birds, Tomboy and Bad Boy for example all gave me the same vibe. Could’ve cut two (or even 3) of those IMO. The Weight of These Wings would have been a decent single album instead!! I added a handful of tracks to my Record Club Recap and Faves playlist but I couldn’t tell you how half of them go!! I listened to this album at least 3 times, maybe 4! The Aretha Franklin record this week should be a nice change of pace - even if it is long … it’s a live album so I’ll give her a break. (Also I just read about the album and concert film - there’s an interesting story there! I think you guys will think it’s crazy and neat, too!)
