Comments

Shawn's ability to power through these albums is inspirational. That said, this was a really solid record. Feel like I've done my homework on gospel music now!

Totally understand why many won't connect with this, but this was wonderful. The time flew by listening to this. I did grow up in a church where gospel and hymns were the norm, so I have a strong connection to this style of music. A new favorite live album for me.

Aretha was so talented, this got me listening to tracks here and there off her studio albums, too. It’s fun comparing recordings from her early days to the shitty production in the 80s. Her voice is still great but man, those are some dark times. While gospel isn’t something I gravitate toward, I got a real kick out of how fired up everyone got about Jesus and the Lord. How I Got Over and Climbing Higher Mountains were my faves - although I’m dumb and thought they were singing ‘I’m glad all over’ instead. There’s also a complete edition of Amazing Grace, I think it has the full sets from both nights - that was a little too much for me! I’ll probably turn the documentary on over breakfast this weekend or something. What a crazy story!! I’m a big fan of the Velvet Underground song next week, I hope Beyonce’s album is just as enjoyable lol

I felt basically the same as Shawn did on this one. Gospel’s not my thing and it was way too loose most of the time but the singing is very impressive and for the people who like this sort of thing, this is definitely the sort of thing those people like lmao. So yeah it probably deserves to be on the list but it’s definitely not my thing. I also felt bad for the pianist just trying to follow Aretha as she was doing whatever she wanted lol. 2/5 for me also.

No shades Shawn, but I'd rather listen to a full 11 LP Aretha Franklin box set than hear "if you want to destroy my sweateeerrrr" or any Aquabats song again (maybe not lonely horseman)

I know this is a live album, but I liked it. I'm a sucker for gospel, idk what it is but the vibe is just there. One of those records that you can put on in the background on a weekend morning and just chill, make breakfast, hangout. I'm not even religious either, I just think the music is great. 3.5-4/5 for me I'd say. Whatever the next thing is, here's hoping it's under an hour lol.

We're in the Homework era of Record Club. If you didn't spend money on that Rolling Stone book I'd plead that we re-think this entire format, go to AOTY or something-- but I feel bad. This list is ass though.
