You’ll risk copyright issues otherwise. That's one of the pluses of having this show behind a Patreon is that you’re able to mostly avoid that. In that regard I kind of wish the show wasn't leaving Patreon, but I understand y'all have to do what y'all feel is right. Though I will admit this show was a big incentive for me to be subbed to Patreon. It’s crazy the amount of popular musicians over the decades that started doing music in the church. It’s always good to get a young start with music and you get a lot of practice that way. Plus when it’s for church you’re doing it mainly out of love and you really get a strong grasp on expressing emotion within music. I think this a great album, though I will say live albums on these top lists are always weird for me. Artists performing live capture the true essence of them and their music that can often get watered down through studio renditions. This is one of those cases. Sam has some great studio material, but the energy and feeling in this live performance brings it to another level. Live albums like this also end up being impactful as a timestamp for the evolution of music and live performance. That being said, it’s kind of unfair to have albums like this on these kinds of lists because a lot of times they're basically greatest hits albums. With the other factors I listed though I can often see reason to look past that. I know it might be hard to get into more Sam Cooke, understandably so, but I will say that Night Beat and Ain't That Good News are really good studio albums by him. His cover of A Change Is Gonna Come is truly one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Though I must admit the controversy surrounding him has definitely tarnished his music for me as well. Excited to hear your thoughts on Maggot Brain!!! Incredible album!! I think that's gonna be a great first episode to put on your channel too. You should definitely get some new people checking you out. I think you’ll do great as always. Screw the haters if they show up lol Keep up the great work Shawn!

I’ve never heard of Sam Cooke before, but dang does he have an amazing voice and the bass lines are super groovy. I listened to some of the regular recordings and the live versions are definitely better. His voice sounds better live and his commentaries and energy are contagious. I can literally feel the audience having a good time. I enjoy the whole album front to back. I give it a 4/5. Favorite Songs: Feel It Chain Gang Somebody Have Mercy Bring It On Home To Me Tell Me Why by Backsteet Boys is Nostalgic but not my favorite. I’m with you 3/5.

2025-01-16 15:44:10 +0000 UTCWhile his death does tarnish his legacy, I love this album so much. It’s so raw and fun. The only problem with it is that it’s such a short album it’s over before you know it. It’s one of those albums that I keep in my car for road trips when I’m sick of the radio.

I was surprised to see that he was like a young handsome dude and not an old salty sea dog kinda guy lmao although it sounds like he acted like one. What an insane story about his death. 3/5 for me. Chain Gang was probably my favorite track

Before listening, all I really knew about Sam Cooke was his crazy death and that Animal House used some of his songs. I deff didn’t know King Curtis played with him! Chain Gang, Cupid and Nothing Can Change this Love were my faves. Great voice, upsetting story.
