Mega64 Record Club Ep. 66 - Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove(#360)

Did you know that George Clinton helped invent a new genre of music call P-Funk? Or that he was in a bunch of bands at the same time...with the same people in all the bands? We learned this a so much more. Come check it out!

wow... Outkast definitely listened to Funkadelic

Paul

Thank you for making record club! Maggot Brain sounded amazing btw!

This series is a safari of popular culture, history, and music and I love it. Even if I just listen to an album once, the vehicle keeps moving and there's something completely different around the bend.

Yea I'd agree with the four. Been meaning to get into more funk so this was a welcome addition to the rotation

Maggot brain is higher on the list

It’s kind of neat that Little Red Corvette is the song this week because George Clinton appeared in Graffiti Bridge, the sequel to Purple Rain. Something a little funny to check out is The Supremes’ Up the Ladder to the Roof, very similar hook! I definitely need to listen to more Funkadelic and Parliament after this album and I’m definitely pushing Maggot Brain up to the top of my queue. Prior to this week, I was most familiar with the P-Funk All Stars song on The Simpson’s Yellow Album (lol) and George Clinton’s Graffiti Bridge track. I had a lot of fun listening to One Nation Under a Groove, especially the title track, Cholly, Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?! and Lunchmeataphobia. Really cool, funky (duh) and funny, too!

This was a fun record for sure. I agree that the first half is full of bangers but the second half kinda trails off. 3/5 for me

Also please if you haven't seen it, check out the back cover. Parliament-Funkadelic is in the running for "greatest album covers of all time" and while this album's front cover doesn't do much for me........ the back cover is pretty sick.

Of all the Funkadelic albums to make this list, I'm kinda surprised to see this one. In the sea of albums Parliament-Funkadelic released throughout the 70s, this one doesn't stand out to me. Good album, but compare it to Maggot Brain or Free Your Mind... and it's clear they have better work.

I grew up with the Hillary Duff version of Our Lips Are Sealed.

This was a last day listen for me, I couldn't muster up any excitement. With that being said I'd probably give it 3/5 or at least somewhere very close. I enjoyed listening to the entire album but I'm not sure if any moment specifically stood out to me. Little Red Corvette has one of the coolest yet heartbreaking opening lines ever, the delivery too is fuckin' cold-blooded but clearly overflowing with emotion. Prince fucking rules so hard ugh.

Maggot Brain is a Funkadelic album and its better than this one in every way, this album is by no means bad, but theres a reason everyone mentions Maggot Brain, I guarantee its higher on the list, probably top 50

marathedemon

Maggot brain by Funkadelic is one of the greatest songs ever, you should check it out. Edit: Looks like the song is on the album, nvm
