Mega64 Record Club Ep. 67 - Howlin' Wolf - Moanin' in the Moonlight(#477)

Howlin' Wolf was pivotal in creating the Chicago blues scene, but why did he have the blues and what was the story behind this album from 1959. Let's take a trip back and find out what happened to him and find out what President of the United States he was named after.

Didn't think too deeply about this album until Shawn started talking. I feel like my connection to hip-hop today is what my connection to blues would have been in the mid-century. It's a mirror held to American life that I know only through others' narratives and experiences. Love this album.

Soundgarden cover of Smokestack Lightning is badass

Love Howlin Wolf! I would highly recommend also checking out his compilation “Howlin’ Wolf” from 1962 which similarly to this one is a collection of singles but these ones are from 1960-1962. Some of his best recordings are on it.

This one was alright, I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’m not that big of a blues guy. I do appreciate his vocals though. He goes full beast mode on some of the songs and that’s hype. 2.5/5 for me

What a fun change of pace (for me) Howlin’ Wolf was! I was giving a little side-eye at the fact that this was a compilation but since it was only about half an hour I was down. Smokestack Lightning and All Night Boogie were my faves. The Go-Go’s are excellent, I’m sure Beauty and the Beat is on the list somewhere. It’s pretty much amazing front-to-back and the rest of their stuff is dark good, too. Have fun in Kansas City!!

Still spellbound by that "In the Wee Small Hours" album we listened to that was the clearest thing ever recorded despite it being around the same time as some of these singles. Not super into the blues, but this was short and pretty easy to sit through. I think I'd go like, 1.75/5 maybe 2/5. Our Lips Are Sealed is probably a 3.5/5. Hilary Duff's version played a lot in my house as I was a Family Channel kid...
