Mega64 Movie Club: Under The Skin

Under The Skin is one of the more recent movies to be rated as one of the best sci fi movies... ever? We were both kinda surprised to hear that. Is it that good? Does Scarlett Johansson eat people or what? We watched this creepy ass movie to let you know our thoughts.

Jennifer’s Body is actually good

Paul LoBue

To women my fiance's age Jennifer's Body is totally a cult classic. If you were in high school in the late 2000s, that was the movie to see.

The Mooring Line

Brick is a good one to watch, Maybe check out Cube (1997), or Green Room. Those are my suggestions.

Cody W

YES UNDER THE SILVER LAKE WOULD BE AMAZING, and perfect for Mega64if you know what happens

hankey65

Two movies I'd like to see you guys talk about: Hundreds of Beavers: Low budget, fun, and creative. Reminded me of Mega64! Psycho Goreman: Would like to hear Rocco's thoughts on it since he's a tokusatsu fan!

nap

I have to hear Shawn's take on Trap.

Brian

Any Robert Altman on the show would rule. I’ve been trying to get more into him, I wish more of his stuff was on streaming

Austin Ryder

Love the way that movie (sexy beast) is shot!! so striking

Austin Ryder

I would recommend Tammy and The T-Rex, dumb campy 90’s movie with practical effects

Sebastian Ruiz

I think Spiderman 3 has gone full circle and is now an iconic cheesy movie that is so much fun to watch. That or Spiderman 2 would be great to re-watch and reflect on the trilogy. Also, a lot of great behind-the-scenes stories from what that movies could have been.

Got to be that guy - Jennifer's Body is a total classic for ppl in their mid to late 20s - Really captured the teen angst and alt scene energy from it's era. Just a fun time capsule type film in a sense for those of us who used to loop fallout boy, panic at the disco, my chemical romance, etc.... sure it's like a hot topic fan fic but it's starring a ton of cool, hot actors from that era in a movie you won't typically see them in.

nburrrzy

I love that not only are you leaving your comfort zone you're going to a movie you explicitly dislike My recommendation would be Synecdoche, New York which only recently overtook The Prestige as my favourite movie

Fromaginator

Still would definitely love to hear your opinions on "Beau is Afraid", but maaaaybe don't later down the line for Shawn's sake haha "Under the Silver Lake" would be fun. I'd say it has a very similar in tone/vibe is Mulholland Drive and it would be fun see what you all think.

JakeWhyman

Hey guys! I just watched the latest podcast. Derrick recommended Cabin in the Woods during the show, and I fully agree with him! I think both Rocco and Shawn would love it, and it would make for a great October episode too. (Plus sounds like you guys could use something to laugh at after this lol)

Mason Maki

I would recommend Jonathan Glazer’s first movie SEXY BEAST — I think it’s interesting to see where he started given he’s only had four films and Under the Skin and Zone of Interest (two of my favorite movies) are so deadly serious. Yet Sexy Beast is a fun and stylish crime movie in the same sort of vein as Trainspotting. And a wild card movie is LOVE LIES BLEEDING (which is on HBO), kind of strange and I’m less sure you guys would like it, but very unique.

Jason Cryer

Definitely would recommend the movie HER with Joaquin and Scarlet. It’s my secret #1 movie of all time lmao.

B3rserk_Paints

Have you guys seen Seven Psychopaths? Maybe it isn't as much of a departure from the norm that you're hoping for, but my favourite movie to watch with friends.

MikeOShay

I recommend Nashville (1975). https://letterboxd.com/film/nashville/

Jared Silva

I highly respect these suggestions. Definitely would be fun to see once of these chosen.

Jennifer's Body has a tiny bit more going on than it's made out to, but apart from the campy, gay overtones, it really has nothing to offer. It's pretty much exactly what it seems to be in trailers. Regardless, Under the Skin is such a great Sci-fi movie! Jonathan Glazer has such a knack for making the mundane horrific.

Hawk9600

I suggest you guys watching a silent film! With The Public Enemy (1931) being your oldest movie, you have never done one on this show. I don't want to recommend too many, but here are a few that are on my Favorite Films of All Time list: 1. Sherlock Jr. (1924) - Buster Keaton comedy that's only 45 minutes long. The special effects he was able to employ will knock your company-branded socks off. 2. Metropolis (1927) - This clocks in at over 2 hours so maybe try the comedy first, but this is monumental in terms of science fiction. 3. Sunrise: A Song of Two Human (1927) - The one and only Academy Award winner for Best Unique and Artistic Picture back at the 1st Awards. This was made at the tail end of the silent film era so these filmmakers were running on all cylinders with the technology of their day. So many wow moments from a cinematography perspective. These are just a few. I would start with the Keaton if you're feeling some trepidation with silent films (Chaplin films are also good!).

Neil Steffens

Some people shit on that movie but I loved it. The director is a bit of a dick but the movie is so good.

Saw Jennifer's Body a couple of years ago for the first time and did enjoy it. Movie Club suggestion: The Company of Wolves

Triangle of Sadness

I know plenty of people who LOVE Jennifer's Body, and I'd say in the last 2 years or so it reached zeitgeist level where now everyone has at least heard the name. I'd say a good rule should be not to talk shit on something unless you've seen it tho.

@GarrettVacation 🔪💖🩸

I’d probably suggest Longlegs just because I think it’d be a great discussion for a recent horror movie that’s been mentioned for the marketing.

vEisDe4d

I would suggest back to Kevin smith…. Jersey girl or tusk

Rafael ZB

I will fight the urge to recommend a thousand movies. Monster (2023) - japanese movie , absolutely beautiful - its one of those movies that the less you know the better but its about a young teen boy who starts acting strange which causes his widowed mother to be concerned. Y Tu Mama Tambien - yeah the movie is very horny but similar to what Rocco said about Under the skin, this movie is perfectly executed.

Dan N

Another thing that becomes clear on the rewatch of this movie is the shot of the ant at the beginning of the movie. The ant's all black body being similar to what we in the end see what the aliens look like.

Dan N

I would also be really interested to hear an episode on Beau Is Afraid (which you might like better than Ari aster’s horror movies; it has some bits that reminded me of mega64 in the staging or sense of humor, and the original ending to the leaked script you can find online is crazy and how yall would end a movie) and/or Southland Tales (just because it’s crazy, but also ambitious)

Austin Ryder

Also, People’s Joker is now available online VOD/to rent, would love to hear y’all’s thoughts on that for movie club!!

Austin Ryder

I have heard a lot of people talk about Jennifer’s Body as being an actual cult classic or more subversive than it was marketed as. I feel like Sam Raimi’s movie Drag Me To Hell (which I wanna say came out around the same time?) was also a victim of that, as was Spring Breakers in that I feel like the marketing did those movies dirty

Austin Ryder

I was in high school when Jennifer's Body came out and was too young to see it in theaters but me and all my other little boy friends were so excited to rent it OnDemand
