Mega64 Movie Club: Wolf Children

Rocco and Shawn tracked down Wolf Children (somehow) and wanted to see if this was really as emotional as we were told. Did this sort-of-lost (currently, anyway) 2012 movie actually make us cry...?
I watched this a few months ago for the first time since my friend has the DVD, absolutely loved it! It made me cry and I felt so much for the mom and those kids navigating their life, the son's character development was insane too. Look forward to backtracking to listening to your guys take on this!

I think Tokyo Godfathers would hit for Shawn.

I saw Wolf Children after RoE 3+1 and it reminded me of the village scenes, the best part of 3+1

Making Shawn watch Grave of the FireFlies is probably the worst possible thing you could have done. I kinda wish you had. Seeing Shawn react with broiling hatred to one of the most acclaimed anime films of all time would be something.

So happy you guys reviewed Wolf Children. This is my favorite movie and Hosoda is my favorite director. Ecstatic that you guys enjoyed it as much as you did. I had a feeling it would win Shawn over given the subject matter. I highly encourage you to check out his other films as well (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars are both fantastic).

Speaking of anime movies, I caught Look Back in theatres and thought it's worth watching if possible. It's about growing up creating art and why one continues to create despite changing circumstances and challenges and it's really beautiful.

I can second that with Ellipsoidz - I love all of Hosoda's work, but can not recommend "Mirai" enough. "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' is definitely worth watching as well, but for a movie club in particular, "Mirai" might be a better choice.

Just a friendly reminder that you can always borrow movies from your local library. I just searched the San Diego Public Library catalog and there's 4 copies. Piracy is sometimes the only option, but there's always the library!

Nice to see you found an anime movie you both loved. Personally loved "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" and I think Shawn in particular would like "Mirai", both from the same director as this. Mirai is a lighter story that takes you through the eyes of a child in a family with a newborn.

Loved this episode, so glad you both enjoyed it!
Also, it might be just me, but honestly “The Girl who left through time” felt a bit like a victim of overhype. I connected way more with Wolf Children and it is probably my favourite anime movie. The Mamoru Hosoda film that came closest to me in terms of a strong emotional connection was “Mirai”. I would definitely recommend that one.
