Little culture lessons or even Olympic type mini challenges where it feels like other cultures and other countries drag are getting celebrated. It would alleviate some of the gloom of favoritism for the English speaking country queens everyone’s been feeling

That resulted in her getting taken off the cast before they started filming (ALLEGEDLY).

2024-08-27 02:27:41 +0000 UTCso far its pretty entertaining and im liking it more than some of the vs the world seasons and the production value is definitely there but its just... i already feel too much favoring going on and we're only on epsiode 3! like the whole athena situation... girl that was crazy... it kinda just showed how rupaul's lens of drag is still a bit too closed-minded, especially for how big this franchise has become. the season itself has been fun and im loving seeing the blend of cultures and the dynamic btw the queens but i hope the questionable judging does not continue because it could really ruin a series that i think has the potential to be good!!!

It has...no heart? I don't know, no feels, no nothing. It's soulless? Something like that. But yeah, Alyssa is being set up to win, really obvious narrative pushing. =( At least so far.

And I have a feeling that Alyssa is going to receive nearly all positive critiques regardless of how she does. I mean, the way the judges were gushing over a corset with bolts of fabric wrapped around it? Sure, why not?

2024-08-26 19:28:14 +0000 UTCI think that while the first three episodes were fun and joyous, I also think we are about to start getting into acting/comedy challenges where some of the girls will be at a clear disadvantage. I can't imagine that Snatch Game is going to go over that well unless the girls were specifically directed to do characters that RuPaul would know. I think as the season goes on, we will also see more favoritism of Alyssa, Kween, and Kitty. I really want Eva Le Queen to go all the way but I will take a challenge win for her! As of now, my top 3 are Alyssa, Pythia, and Eva, but it definitely feels like the season is set up for Alyssa

2024-08-26 18:36:55 +0000 UTCI hate to say it, but the perceivable disadvantage to the ESL queens and the Alyssa Edwards-centric edit has been a bit of an awkward vibe for me, personally. I think that combined with the shorter episode length has kept me from getting fully invested, but I'm still in it and happy to see international queens on a larger platform. Anyone else feel like there's something missing or coming up short of expectations?

2024-08-26 18:20:28 +0000 UTCA few years ago I worked for an independent captioning company. There were very specific guidelines as to how we could caption everything. If anything wasn’t in English we were not allowed to translate. We did quite a few World of Wonder shows. Each network or streaming service is responsible for captioning. So, for example, if you’re watching the same episode on, let’s say OutTV that someone else is watching on Paramount+ or on WOW itself, you will most likely see captions that were performed by a different person working for a different company.

The TLDR is I think WoW's clunky at handling the ESL queens and I think the editing reflects that, which is embarassing for the concept of the show overall. ---- I'm mixed on it.. I've seen all of the international series save for Germany and Italia and I generally feel like World of Wonder doesn't *actually* know how to deliver international content. There's no excuse for them to EVER pull a filler "speaks French/Italian/Native Language" subtitle instead of actually translating what's being spoken. Even then the subtitles/captioning situation has always been a mess and I think it's a real fuck-you to the ESL (english as a second language) queens. I think the only time they choose to translate non-english dialogue is when it's unavoidable because it's tied to the primary content, like Soa's talent show or Alexis' bit at the end of CvTW2. Philippines is a huge outlier in this area. Seasons 1 and 2 both have translations with a very different style that includes us in on cultural elements specific to them, and Season 3 has translator's notes in the dialogue! None of the other franchises to this. WoW just isn't properly translating personalities for ESL queens, and I think Global Allstars being very specific about featuring them in ways where they're ultimately bantering with Kitty, Alyssa, Kween Kong, or Pythia is kind of a reflection of that. If they're not bantering with them, they're having reality tv-style conversation prompts we've seen before and can recognize like "how will you do on ___ challenge" "who had the worst ___" "none of us were judged by ru are we nervous about that". It's a little.. sterile. If you've ever had an ESL friend, you know you're getting only 20% - 40% of what they're like until *you* take the time to learn how they speak and get a handle on what's their personality vs them making concessions to flatten themselves so you can immediately understand them, and I think either I'm seeing that here, or I'm projecting it. We'll see as the series goes on I guess!

I worry that the queens who don’t speak English as a first language will suffer when it comes to comedy challenges. I’m rooting for the queens whose seasons I’ve watched— Gala, Miranda, Pythia, Eva— but it feels like this is Alyssa’s to lose.

Her looks for the ball had vision, unlike *some* of the girls who showed up in basic ass clothes. Throwing rhinestones on an outfit doesn’t make it better if the outfit is uninteresting otherwise. Miranda’s Carmen Sandiego look was chef’s kiss! Cool silhouette, great fabric choice, presentation was a 10.

2024-08-26 17:17:00 +0000 UTCI'm LOVING the cast of girls! Seeing all different cultures of drag in one place is exciting. However, the judging and production shenanigans are as apparent as ever. The favorable edits of the "English is their first language" group is NOT very cutesy, not demure and not very mindful! But it's Drag Race and I would be shocked if it was any other way. And the judging??? Gurlll, please!! The Global Porkchop was 100% WRONG!!!! Ru's misunderstanding of other countries style of drag is on full display. I expected as much, honestly. But I'll be watching every week to support the dolls! They deserve that much! I do have one question though: why is there no Thailand queen? That's the only franchise left out.

I know no one likes the no elimination seasons but I think global all stars and all winners are the only seasons that actually make sense as no elimination seasons so we have a better chance to get to know all the queens and for them to get to know each other. Overall I’m really enjoying it and I hope it’s a format they bring back!

I thought it was crazy that they included Miranda talking about how it’s difficult for the girls from non-Ru seasons to get costumes and whatnot, and then was in the bottom for seemingly that very reason. I’m hoping the editing gets better too as more people go home. (Even though I will stand by the fact that Athena should not have gone home cuz absolutely wtf was kitty doing this episode). I also really like that we have the bottom 2 lip syncing. Overall, still choosing to have hope in this early part of the season.

The first two episodes were great because you got to see and get to know everyone a little bit; I wish they'd kept that length for the whole season. For example, it would've been great for global audiences to get to know Pythia more this past episode, especially since she was the winner. I feel like we barely got to know the queen who was eliminated episode 3. And I enjoy Kitty, but my husband and I were saying we felt like there were stronger queens to represent the UK on a global stage (as is evident by her runways in ep 3).

Also, the favoritism for the queens from English language franchises, especially the ones judged by Ru, is very evident and makes me incredibly pessimistic about how the rest of the season will go. On a more positive note, I loved that they started with the talent show, which gave the queens more freedom to really show themselves before the eliminations started. Anyway #TeamEva

2024-08-26 16:39:29 +0000 UTCAlyssa is consistently getting longer and more 💯 positive critiques- combine that with the Alyssa only press week, and imho they’re not even trying to maintain any suspense about the competition anymore. I love Alyssa, and she does deserve a crown, but setting her up as if she’s the only “perfect” contestant is only going to result in the backlash Lemon is facing currently. Also, if this is global AS, why are all the lipsync songs only in English?! That automatically favors the native English speaking contestants (most of which Ru judged on their original seasons also)? Why not do a few songs from each of the queen’s native languages so it appears to be more fair? 💩🚽

Maybe she wants to appear serious and discerning. Is she mad about the lips syncs themselves? Jet lag, coffee enema, etc? I thought Soa’s lip sync was great this last episode. She embodied the song and gave drama. Plus, the outfit was very cool (unfortunately, cooler than her ball looks). But Ru didn’t smile once.🤷🏻♀️

There needs to be an acknowledgment of the other cultures in the room even tho everyone has to speak English. More surprise appearances from judges or hosts of the countries represented.

It’s RuPaul’s drag race, he ALWAYS plays favorites, that’s like kind of the whole point - Athena and Soa were judged harsher than they should have been - judging in the talent shows was pretty fair (except Vanity who I think has been bad and idk why they praise her, should’ve been Gala)

We’ve done Talent Show and a Ball, neither requiring a ton of comedy or speech, but I’m curious in comedy challenges and especially Snatch Game how the international queens will be judged by an all US judging panel. Hoping there’s grace and less weird commentary from Michelle a la “Que Bellllllla” 😂

As a german I love how much they‘re featuring our diva!!! Giving the girls a chance to lipsync for their lives feels great. Having an extra little twist like the beaver, would‘ve been great though! The beaver is one of the better twists they introduced
