Aww I’m glad something about my message resonated even though it wasn’t quite in response to the question you actually asked 🙈
And yess I agree so much re representation! And actually, whilst having all the documentaries about autism/adhd/tourettes etc is important and some of them are really good and informative watches, there’s something about having real ND people just exist as themselves on tv shows that *aren’t* about neurodivergency that’s so important too. More of that pleaseee

OOPS I just re-listened to your question and have realised your question wasn’t even pertaining to post-diagnoses acceptance at all. (Did I mention I have inattentive ADHD 😭)
Anyways potentially my advice may still be of benefit to someone so I shall leave the message up.

Omg I love and appreciate this comment Sari!!! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS ❤️ I agree self acceptance is a long and winding round but a worthwhile one! And representation is insanely important!!!! I grew up a fat weird gay kid and felt crazy in my small suburb and seeing Kim Chi on season 8 saved my life. I know it sounds dramatic but seeing her succeed and be loved by everyone really rewired my brain because my identity and my body at the time were both treated as failures and negatives instead of beautiful things!

I know your question was aimed at Darby but this topic of self-acceptance post diagnosis is something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently (and is such a common issue), so I hope you don’t mind me chiming in. It’s taken me years and years to actually, fully accept my neurodivergent self (Autistic and ADHD (tho mine is inattentive not hyperactive)) but genuinely I’ve made it to that place now and potentially I can give some wisdom that can help you reach that place a bit quicker than I did.
I think because neurodivergent conditions are almost always discussed in terms of, noticed by, and even diagnosed by our ‘deficits’ and the ways in which we are different, it’s so easy to have a negative and actually unfair perception of ourselves. And personally, I have definitely struggled and had periods where I’ve been deeply upset and frustrated with myself for being autistic and adhd due to all of the challenges being different has caused me.
I remember watching Fern Brady on Taskmaster a few years ago and it was the first time I saw someone who moved, spoke, stimmed, processed information like me on TV and getting to watch her be herself unmasked and make people laugh every week was a very cathartic experience.
More recently I had a similar experience watching Ali on the most recent UK Big Brother. Initially I liked watching her as a fellow AuDHD lesbian, but as the weeks went on I began to recognise that lots of my favourite parts of her personality were tied to her neurodivergence (e.g. her deep empathy, strong-mindedness, amazing pattern recognition, honesty, aversion to BS). And through watching her, I was able to recognise all of those traits are good and that I am also all of those things.
And certainly I have other stories about friends and people from my real life in addition to those two examples. So really my self-acceptance has come from an amalgamation of sources but in every case it’s a story of because I liked seeing *x person* be their authentic ND self so much, bit by bit things clicked and I became able to appreciate and like me and my ND self more.
Your people are going to be different than mine of course, and the tricky part is finding them because representation is still limited. But, in essence, the point I’ve been trying to get to is just that if you can like and accept other ADHD people, you like and accept yourself.
You’re perfect, just as you are. Great minds think differently. 🫶🏼

Woo! Thanks for reading my email. I am definitely old enough to be a grandfather, so my long, rambling letters should be accompanied by a birthday card and a crisp, new $5 bill. P is for Patrick, and that's ME!
