Crybaby & Dollhouse by Melanie Martinez

Comments

You eventually got there, yes cry baby is the introduction to the whole story that unravels through the album which is why it may feel like it didn’t finish to you. Totally here for this journey

I can 100% relate to you about church and this song. I have so many trauma stories that originated at church that me and my sister both will talk about occasionally. Enough so that when we heard this song quite awhile ago, it made us both immediately think of church. Which honestly is pretty messed up if you think about it.

She has said like the song crybaby is what people called her and she wrote the song to cope with it. She has said like 1 or 2 songs are about her life and how she had a great life . Most things she wrote based on like her friend’s lives. So cry baby is just a character.

You were totally right that Crybaby is a foundation for the whole album. So Crybaby is the character (reportedly based on her as she was called a crybaby by peers) that is the focus of this entire concept album. I was digging around when you asked if it was based on her life, and I couldn't really find an answer aside from she did base the emotional sensitivity of the character off herself. In terms of keeping up appearances, one that I personally had to keep up was that home was a safe place. And it was kinda a completely different thing than wanting to impress people. It was the total opposite. I kept up a huge facade to keep people from asking questions. And I think that happens for a lot of people, just as much as it does to keep others pleased with us. If that makes sense. Loved the reaction and I always appreciate your honesty when a song just isn't what you enjoy. I hope you enjoy the rest of the album! Looking forward to it 😊

Oh wow. That is very interesting. Was that all based on her childhood? The mom drinking and whatnot?

Your comment about church is interesting, as she grew up in a religious traditional Latin household, where she felt shameful, afraid to be 100% herself
