Maybe you should stay in the closet...Coming Out re-examined

Thanks for sharing your story. Your dad sounds so sweet lol. I’m straight, but as a parent I’ve made it a point to think outside the heteronormative box, and remember that I don’t know who my kids may one day end up with. I know my oldest is identifying as bisexual at the moment, which I found out accidentally. So she didn’t really “come out” but I acknowledged it, and I know my reaction was definitely anti-climactic lol. Same as when my little cousin was telling me she thinks she’s bi. I just want them to know I love and support them no matter what.

Thank you for sharing your personal story so honestly - I can only imagine that this is going to serve as such a PRACTICAL support for so many. The idea of being rejected (which to our nervous systems FEELS like we are going to die!) or made to be literally unsafe due to something that we inherently are, this must be one of the deepest traumas a human can face. I'm so happy to hear that in your life you were able to find relative safety (even with the discomfort of those close to you) AND that you were free to PURSUE exploring this in yourself regardless. That's HUGE! I genuinely hope that we continue to move towards a world where more and more are SAFE to be who they are. As you said - standing together in ways that don't put the self in harms way, it's the way it's going to happen. Also your deep compassion for those who aren't getting it/are really causing harm - it's truly commendable. Because at the end of the day we aren't going to hate people into acceptance anymore than we can shame people into being something other than what they are. It's such a big issue and topic and your exploration here is beautiful.
