I loved this video! A question, if anyone feels inclined to answer: do you think tactical misunderstanding is what’s operating when people say “not all men” or in less cliched examples, when people might retort if you say something like “I haven’t learned anything in this class” and someone says “that that can’t be true, you must have learned *something*”. It’s a phenomenon that I’m paying attention to in my personal life since it bothers me that people are missing the point, and I think if I had a psychological phrase to describe it it would be helpful in getting my communication needs met with people. Does that sound like an example of tactical misunderstanding or some other phenomenon?

2023-02-05 16:37:34 +0000 UTCLoved this vid! With things like e.g. astrology or Myers-Briggs or whatever, I think I find value in them because they give me empathy for myself. For a quick example, I was taught as a kid that having introvert tendencies was weird or bad, but when it was explained as just one of many ways to be, or even as a strategy (like needing to "recharge your social battery"), I felt so much less shame for wanting to be alone sometimes. I only mention this because your video made me think about how it's almost the opposite for things like Men Are From Mars, mostly because books or frameworks like that just uphold patriarchy/the power dynamic. If it actually said something useful about how men/women are socialized then it might create more empathy- but instead it's basically a rule book? I'm going to be considering this comparison more but I like your conclusion that it's empowering to create and live your own identity rather than having it put on you.
