The "Graphene" tier will be discontinued.

In the early days of the website (and the Patreon), there wasn't much you can do with the graph comparison tool. You could compare graphs with each other but that was it; and as more and more people was made aware of the power of EQ, these limitations were definitely a huge sticking point.

And so, at some point I decided to provide users access to the raw measurements database, for $15/month. Which in hindsight, given the sheer amount of data in the database which also includes MDAT files for headphone measurements, is an absolute steal.

But as the audience base grows, so have the malicious individuals. I've been getting threats (directly and indirectly) from subscribers saying that if I don't do X or don't perform Y (or simply just because), that they will host them in public as retaliation. This game of chicken has been going on for years, and while I've called these individuals out on their bluff and nothing of note has happened thus far, I know that eventually there will be some psychopath out there who would absolutely use this access as a bargaining chip.

So effective immediately, new subscriptions to the "Graphene" tier of this Patreon will be discontinued. Existing subscribers will continue to have access as long as they continue their subscription.

I've made this decision after careful consideration, understanding what exactly this raw data is used for. 99% of the time, Graphene subscribers are just in it for EQ customisation and personalisation, features that are now baked in for free in the Graph Comparison Tool. You wouldn't need the raw data to do high-level EQ modifications anymore; in fact, you don't even need to pay anything

For those who require the raw data for any large projects, I'm still open to any private requests. The AutoEQ project for example still makes use of unrestricted access to my raw measurements database.

But for the rest, I'm sorry. It's just not worth the headache anymore.

Comments

Also this whole situation makes me wonder if there should be an additional tier to help cover Crin's therapy bills from dealing with all this nonsense. People can be such assholes.

Seems like a very reasonable move given the circumstances. IMO Crin would have been well within his rights to pull access for existing subscribers too. Kudos to Crin for being a stand up guy and limiting this change to new but not existing subscribers.

Jesus I didn't realize people could be this evil
