Have a Slice- hurt
Added 2018-08-09 14:21:39 +0000 UTC
At least it allowed me to draw this out in the moment, which helped me move past it way quicker than when I keep it all inside and tell myself NOPE, CAN'T HURT ME. /cue "can't touch this" music/
Sometimes it does, and it's all right.
Have a Slice are autobio comics that revolve around my personal views and experience. They exist thanks to the support from you lovely Patrons! Some silly ones may update solely on Patreon, but most are made to be shown publicly, on twitter and tumblr. Cheers!
Freedom of speech doesn't free one from the consequences of that speech. Which includes telling people what kind of person you are.
It may not show up where the random recipient can see it, but Karma does tend to come back around in often unexpected ways.
So hang in there, Chlove. As others here have already attested, what you have done with _your_ freedom of speech through your publications has already helped a lot of people and that has got to be good for your own Karma.

Shits who hide behind freedom of speech are merely defending their right to be a shit.

"I hope very much you didn't mean me" I don't understand what connection you've made between the comic and yourself but I can assure you there was none. And as for the Patreon thing, apology accepted, don't worry about it.

FWIW, my life is more full of love thanks to your comic, your community, and you. Things like this may make it hard to see, but you are having a real effect on the world by just being yourself. Take care of yourself, and don’t let your light dim. ❤️

Love and friendship IS the Bomb, and as much as it outweighs the bad, the bad still hurts. I'm sorry for the hurt, sending love and friendship your way <3

The "freedom of speech" is a stupid argument for being an arsehole, but on the other hand, every person is entitled to their opinion. That always goes both ways - otherwise somebody would always play thought police for others. It doesn't mean one is entitled to hurt others. And it should never be forgotten that one must bear the consequences for things said, though in this case it was mostly you that got hurt and not the guy. But it could have gone very differently for him if you were a different person, you know... I have a hard time dealing with painful things myself, sometimes, but this is something you simply have to learn to deal with. But talking to other people about your pain helps often!

The comment "freedom of speech" is used a lot in the United States where I live as an excuse for people to say mean and hurtful things as if it's "ok." They're not doing something illegal but why does that justify it to them to say hurtful things to and about others? Is the only reason the same people don't go around killing people because they can go jail? I'm worry about the part of society that requires the laws of a nation to act like decent human beings. Chlove I admire your honesty to us in this strip. Your openness about staying up in bed turning the situation in your head over and over relates to me. The idea that comments like this do hurt is proof to others that even though you may have the freedom to speak you should exercise that freedom with responsibility. It's brave to admit pain and I appreciate your honesty for it.
Faith and Valor have a good month creators. Love all that you do.

I hope very much you didn’t mean me. I posted on Patreon precisely because I was talking about Patreon. You’re so right here about having to acknowledge, feel and process hurt in order to get past it; please consider my general comments about Patreon, and even my comments to you there, wrong as they were, for which I apologize completely, as being that way for me, hurt I didn’t know I had that I needed to acknowledge, feel and process. Again, I was wrong to post those comments and I apologize completely.

This is so sad. Hate speech isn’t free speech and claiming that it is so is the refuge of villainy. There’s a trial going on now in the US against a provocateur whose hate filled conspiracy theories and claims of freedom of speech and “just my opinion” have endangered lives. I am saddened to hear that this kind of thing even reaches you in Belgium. Somehow I think of the world of Roomie, Lillian, and even the cannibal “twins” as a refuge from that ugly reality. So sorry you’re going through this but thank you for letting us know.

That's awful, sorry that it happened but major points to you for confronting the guy rather than just walking away like you didn't hear it. That takes serious guts.
