Patreon did a woopsie!

Hey everyone! Just a quick heads up, there seems to be trouble with payments coming from credit cards. So if that's the way you're paying creators, make sure to check if the donation went through or switch to paypal payment! Several creators have been hit, including me (went from 500 patrons to 457 in a day??), I don't understand everything that's happening but here's a tweet explaining a little better: https://twitter.com/MelloMakes/status/1025077781443559426?s=19 Hope the Patreon Support team is on it as we speak, and hope it didn't hurt too many creators... (I won't hold my breath) Thanks for your continued support everyone! Love.

Patreon did a woopsie!

Yes 6% of my Patrons disappeared. Well, I only had 16, so only 1 left but still annoying.

You're digging in your heels now, and seem to be interpreting Chlove's comments through the lens of negativity on Twitter and elsewhere, not by her comments alone. I'll also dig in and stand by what I said and say that her comments are warranted and not overtly negative. I don't see any of what you're saying above. In my opinion, Patreon did fuck up. They can be well-meaning all they like, and still fuck up. *No one's saying they did it on purpose/for their own gain.* That seems to be you thinking others are thinking that. Sure, they're a new company doing a good thing for creators. But it could be argued that they didn't do their due diligence or consult people in the know before flipping this switch. That's what you do when you're new and you don't know what you're doing. Heck, I know shit-all about this stuff, but my credit card gets frozen if I'm out of STATE, let alone out of country. No wonder my bank rejected the transaction, I've never even been to the UK. I'll leave it there. Have a nice night.

I think it would be fair to call the quotes around “accident” antagonistic in that they imply that Patreon “fucked up” (not “had a problem”} on purpose and for their own gain, and what I am disappointed about is how the bandwagon of antipathy and antagonistic comments about Patreon seems more important to outraged customers than assuming Patreon’s good will and speaking accordingly does.

Alan Monasch

Patreon really could have gotten the word out sooner; I understand they were trying to wrap their arms around it on the backend, but even just a "we're aware of a problem, trying to fix asap" would have been good. A lot of people depend on this platform and were a little freaked out. I think if we could turn back time, that'd be the #1 thing they could have done differently that would have helped (just more communication; switching payments to the UK maybe should have been mentioned as well, but I don't run a business and don't know if they'd want that to be public knowledge). I don't want to speak for them, but I think Chlove has posted fair comments in a levelheaded way, not at all in the negative tone that I think a lot of us are seeing on Twitter and elsewhere. I think if you go back and read them again, you'd see that. You're being a mite antagonistic.

Woah there, what's happening? Where is this coming from? I think you should see other peepz for this, there's no patreon hate here. Have a nice day.

I see now; it’s OK to hate on Patreon because though they take responsibility for the part of the problem that is theirs, they don’t take responsibility for the part they don’t control and they are self-servingly withholding information from creators and from patrons about things they don’t control and for accidental outcomes of their admitted actions. Please go ahead and lambaste them, then, and feel free to ignore the good they do, realizing that by listening and wanting to do things right, they open themselves up to more harsh criticism than larger companies who feel no need listen to customers at all. I am disappointed, I’m sure that if you were treated similarly, you’d feel it was unfair.

Alan Monasch

I put accident in quotes because Patreon has replied on twitter about this payment error, and has said it was partly due because of external forces and another part because of their own experiences they were doing for the platform. So as accidents go, it was one they've caused at least partly. https://twitter.com/Patreon/status/1025071287020871680

clover

What I am talking about is what makes you put “accident” in quotes. Do you think that Patreon was “fucking up” in its own favor, or being dishonest about having had trouble? Do we not give Patreon any benefit of any doubt because we think it’s a big, faceless corporation that ignores artists so as to help itself? How does this square with the notion that Patreon exists at all because a person, Jack Conte, is trying to find an alternate way to get more revenue directly to creators by way of the internet?

Alan Monasch

To further my last comment: I totally agree... to a certain extent! On one hand, I do believe Patreon's doing their best. On the other... this fuck up has hurt this month's income for many creators, some like me who rely on Patreon's services to make a living. But maybe that's on us? This sort of "accident" leads me to realize that I can't 100% depend on this platform, and I need a plan B just in case. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but certainly not one I hoped for!

clover

Thanks!!

clover

ouchhhh

clover

I totally agree!

My payment went through. I wish people would not be so rough on Jack Conte; he is a gigging musician, not a corporate mogul, and he has done artists of all kinds a great service by inventing a way to get more revenue to creators while minimizing the need to pay middle-men. This subscription model is fairly new and will undoubtedly have things that need to be worked out; I wish people did not mindlessly think Patreon is a major Facebook-level corporation that exists to make money from creators’ efforts; it is quite the opposite. And it is depressing to see that even though Patreon fixed its last problem to creators’ satisfaction, this somehow doesn’t count in Patreon’s favor when some unrelated problem arises.

Alan Monasch

It didn't just decline my card, but whatever they did got flagged as potential fraud and got my card locked down for most of the day.

Chris Miller

I was affected, and have fixed it. I appreciate creators getting the word out, since Patreon's been a little slow.

D. Alfonso

Never mind, I didn't read the linked tweets before commenting.

Maybe they finally removed patrons with expired cards. Many creators have had a higher number of patrons than they were paid for due to this.
