Ah, my bad. The last option you listed was the one I was going for! Maybe I should have given the captain a more obvious different outfit so we realize it's not the captain going to meet the barbarian in the end.

Or did the captain go to the past, get attacked by the barbarian and somehow survive, then go back to the future? Or did the captain decide they were going to go, then watch another clone get killed by the barabarian, and change their mind and go back? Sorry, I'm just a bit confused about what's going on!
